James Wilder, Jr., Tampa, Fla./Plant (Tampa): The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Wilder is one of the country's top prospects. He's a big back with a lot of god-given size and athleticism who also projects as a big-time linebacker should he choose to play defense (he says he wants to play running back). Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Miami (Fla.) all are in the mix early.

TAMPA, Fla. -- One of the top prospects in the country continued to be specify which position he prefers to play in college, and several fast risers impressed at the Elite Scouting Combine on Saturday at Jefferson High.

Athlete James Wilder II (Tampa, Fla./Plant) was the top overall prospect at the event and impressed as usual in drills and one-on-ones. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder said in an interview after the event that he still wants to play running back in college, even though many believe that linebacker is his best position.

"Those that say that just drive me to work even harder and prove them wrong," Wilder said. Georgia Tech, Michigan State and Notre Dame recently joined Alabama and others in recruiting him as a running back, he said.

Wilder is focusing on spring football practice, which is just around the corner, and is getting ready to take some unofficial visits in the summer. Schools may not receive much notice as to when Wilder will show.

"I like to go on unofficial visits and just call coaches up and ask if it is OK if I show up at a certain time," Wilder said. "On the official visit, I know that everything is going to be perfect. That's why I like to take unofficial visits, because then you get to find out how things really are."

James Wilder down to three as decision day approaches | Home Team | Tampabay.com

TAMPA - After two of his Plant teammates made their college commitments known Wednesday evening, Panthers running back/defensive end James Wilder Jr. thought to himself out loud, asking himself how he should make his decision known.

"Should I go with the tie, or the hat?" he said, later pondering a free-style rap in his announcement speech.

As of now, one thing's for sure about the Panthers' five-start recruit's commitment: It will come next Wednesday, August 18. Exactly where and when are details still being worked out. Wilder said ESPN would like to broadcast his announcement live from the WEDU studios in Tampa, but Wilder said he'd rather have it in Plant's gymnasium so more people can attend.

"Everyone here's been there for me," Wilder said. "They've been there watching practices, watching games. They deserve to come and see me."

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Wilder, ranked the No. 3 overall recruit in the nation by Rivals.com and the No. 1 prospect by MaxPreps, said he still hasn't made up his mind, but that he is down to three schools - Florida, Florida State and Georgia.
