USC makes cut with touted defensive back

By Phil Kornblut
Highly regarded DB Wayne Lyons (6-0 185) of Ft. Lauderdale has cut a list of 49 offers down to 14?..USC, Stanford, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, LSU, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Auburn, South Florida and UCLA. ?They are all pretty even,? Lyons said. ?I?ll make another cut around the start of the season.? He?s not decided on his official visits at this point. He has visited Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Florida State and Miami and is going to try to visit USC. ?They are in the SEC,? he said. ?Coach Hunter tells me they need defensive backs. Steve Spurrier is there and he?s doing good things.? Lyons plans to be at Florida?s camp next week. He did grow up a Gator fan. He said he won?t make a decision until after his official visits. Last season Lyons had 75 tackles with 21 for loss and 2 interceptions

Top safety Wayne Lyons focussing on in-state schools

Four-star defender Wayne Lyons (Oakland Park, Fla./Dillard) updated ESPN affiliate Web site GatorCountry.com on the latest surrounding his recruitment.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect is favoring the in-state schools; Florida, Florida State and Miami-FL. He feels comfortable in Gainesville, likes that Coral Gables is close to home and is intrigued that the Seminoles have started a new era.

Additionally, Lyons, who does not want to use official visits for the in-state schools, has a date set with UCLA.

Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Nebraska, South Carolina and Stanford are among the other programs still chasing Lyons.

He's expected to wait until January to make his decision.

Dillard star safety Wayne Lyons out 4-6 weeks

Dillard safety Wayne Lyons learned Friday he will likely miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a left knee injury in the loss to Cypress Bay on Thursday.

Lyons confirmed Saturday that a MRI showed he had a slight medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear that will keep him on the sidelines 4-6 weeks.

"If we make it to the playoffs, I'll be ready," Lyons said. "It's my senior year, so I'm not going to try to think about it.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Lyons has already made official visits to Notre Dame and UCLA. He is scheduled to visit Nebraska on Oct. 29.
