I disagree, I think OSU predicted this a while ago. And though his commit was nice, and might have possibly put us in a better spot with Silvera, it ended up making no difference. His eyes were already wandering because he's never even visited, or seemed to try and visit OSU. I didn't even see any mentions of him being with OSU commits at the Opening. I think the staff was being honest with Pope and having him hold off his eventual commitment because they knew Chatfield would probably stay in FL, and they needed to find room for him in the class. JMO

I don't see him in this class for the long haul. Would be happy to have him but OSU also has a few other targets of equal or greater value (the oft-mentioned Parsons, Oweh, Henry, Smith, etc.).

Recognizing that his commitment is extremely soft right now and his latest tweets do not look encouraging, I don't think the above mentioned tweet is an official decommit. Official offers for the 2018 class are formally being given and I think Chatfield was admiring this fact.

I hear you, and my bad for jumping the gun. But I'm then just reading between the lines, and assuming(like most) that he'll end up a Gator. But nothing wrong with admiring any of his official offers. Which him the best wherever he goes(whether thats To TOSU, UF, etc)

Makes it easier to try and fit Smith, Oweh and Parsons. Certainly wasn't forced out but I also don't think there are any tears in the WHAC over this one.

Recruiting may very well be the hardest part of any college coach's job.
Not only do they have to identify, scout, offer and then form a relationship with a prospect and his family, they also have to keep in mind how many players they want at every position in each cycle based on the needs of their team and potential departures following the season.
Then — to make things even more difficult — some kids want to end their recruitment rather quickly and will commit as soon as the staff gives the green light, while others will hold off until later in the process. But what happens when you already hold a commitment at a certain position but remain very much in contention to land another higher-rated prospect down the line?
“That's a dilemma,” head coach Urban Meyer said during his media availability on Monday afternoon. “Myself and Mark Pantoni — who's our director of player personnel here — have a little overage, and there's certain positions you say, '[We'll] take them no matter what.' When you start talking about offensive and defensive linemen, they're a great player, you're taking them. So we take them.”
But even so, recruiting is a numbers game. You can only take so many players at each position in a single class, even at a premium spot like defensive end.
“That's the calculated risk that you have to take,” Meyer added.

The hardest conversation involves the kids, like Chatfield, who fall victim to the numbers game. But in the end, Ohio State gets to pursue the nation's best while Chatfield gets to stay close to home. It seems like a win-win for both sides.

I stand with Wade. Chatfield is undoubtedly talented and would have loved to have him in the class, but I have all of Smith, Oweh and Parsons higher on the board (more importantly, so does the staff). Seems like once Oweh became a very realistic possibility, the staff was more willing to see his recruitment be opened up. I think this will work out great for both sides.
