BN $ - Meyer lets Illinois star know he thinks he could be a Buckeye

Houston visited tOSU today & got to take in this mornings spring practice. Liked the way the players compete & how Coach Coombs gets after his guys. He was impressed by the facilities & being able to meet with coaches Meyer, Schiano & Coombs.

Son of former Illinois/NFL player & current BTN analyst Howard Griffith. Currently holds 11 offers including ND, Sparty, Illinois, Maryland & Kentucky.

HOUSTON GRIFFITH RIDING BIG RECRUITING WAVE
One of Tuesday's bigger visitors for the Buckeyes was Chicago's Houston Griffith, the son of former Illinois star, NCAA record holder (eight touchdowns in a game) NFL veteran, and current Big Ten analyst, Howard Griffith.

A 6-foot, 180-pound 2018 cornerback, Griffith has had a big couple of days. He was offered by Notre Dame during a visit to South Bend last week, then made a tour of big name schools including Tennessee and Alabama before rounding out the trips in Columbus. He didn't get an offer from the Buckeyes, but he left campus impressed.

"(Urban) Meyer and the rest of the staff stress being great on every play," Griffith shared. "Being good isn't good enough at Ohio State. It's very obvious why they compete for championships."

The pace and intensity of the Buckeyes' practice was for Griffith, as it is for most recruits who witness it in person, something that caught his eye. He says his coaches at Mount Carmel are similarly aggressive and that Meyer had a nice message for him when they got a chance to talk.

"Absolutely it is (an atmosphere I can relate to) because my high school practices are run similarly," he said. "(Urban) Meyer said at the end of this process he wants me to be a Buckeye."

The process is just starting for Griffith and he told us he's considering a return to Columbus this summer for one of Ohio States camps. His father's advice has been simple to this point.

"I have to take my time, because this is not a four-year decision – it's a 40-year decision," he added. "I need make sure it's a place I'm comfortable with."

I've really enjoyed this kid's dad on BTN; Howard Griffith's commentary is always pithy, insightful and focused. Clearly the young man takes after his dad: his comments above are unbelievably mature for a HS junior-to-be.

Conference breakdown: Five Big Ten battles for 2018 stars
Griffith has transferred from Chicago’s Mt. Carmel High School to IMG Academy in Florida, but his recruitment remains very Midwest-centric. Talking with Houston and those close to him this summer left the impression that this recruitment may not go on too much longer. His father is former Illinois great Howard Griffith and new head coachLovie Smith has Houston’s attention. Michigan State and Penn State have also had Griffith’s attention for some time and Ohio State has rallied in this recruitment over the last couple months. Look out for Notre Dame, though. Griffith keeps his favorites close to the vest, but they seem to be the team to beat here.

We are out front here and with a steady lead it seems...would LOVE to see Houston in this class, as he truly is one of the better cover corners in the country. It is scary that this DB class has the potential to be on par with 2016's...

Was told the staff sees him in the same position as Amir reip as he's getting awfully thick for a cb and can play free safety as well
