PLANTATION, Fla. – Urban Meyer sat in the football offices at Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage about a month ago, looked head coach Mike Rumph in the eye and conveyed how much he’d like to have quarterback Torrance Gibson at Ohio State.

There’s really nothing all that interesting about that. As one of the top recruiters in the country, Meyer relays that type of message to every high school coach in the country who has a top prospect on his roster.

But the quarterback position is different. Meyer is most particular about the finding the perfect quarterback for his system, and because of that offers at that position are scarce.

So when Meyer locks in on one, it’s special. And Meyer has locked in on Gibson.

“You could tell how bad he wants him,” Rumph told Cleveland.com. “I got a great sense for that. When Coach Meyer came in here, that’s when it started to hit me – Braxton Miller, the zone-read, a quarterback that’s athletic and a fan base and support where Torrance can become a star. It’s almost perfect for him.”

Gibson has that sense about Ohio State, which is why the Buckeyes are at the top of his list even though the four-star athlete has a growing scholarship offer list that already consists of Alabama, Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, Notre Dame, West Virginia and others.

Rated by Rivals.com the No. 3 athlete in the 2015 recruiting class, Gibson has been recruited as a defensive back, wide receiver and quarterback. But he’s only interested in playing quarterback at the next level.

That's why Ohio State stands out. It’s not only that Meyer wants him, it’s that he envisions Gibson as the quarterback of the future for the Buckeyes, a player that can grow into the role and take the reins at one of the biggest college football programs in the country.

“Urban Meyer, we have been talking since last year and he really wants to win and he really wants me,” Gibson said. “I also talk to (offensive coordinator) Tom Herman and (director of player personnel) Mark Pantoni, and they are all great guys and we talk often. We just talk about normal stuff. We don’t even talk about football, we just talk about grades and family. That’s the type of coach I like. I don’t like a coach that only talks about football.”

Gibson has yet to make a trip to Columbus, but he got some valuable face time with the Ohio State coaching staff while the Buckeyes practiced in South Florida in preparation for the Orange Bowl.

Having had the opportunity to watch the Buckeyes go through drills and how the team interacted with Meyer, Gibson said he now has a great feel for what it would be like to play at Ohio State.

"These kids go by what they see," said Rumph, who played safety at Miami before playing in the NFL for five years. "To see Ohio State down here in the Orange Bowl, playing in that game, and see them down here all week practicing, it puts a vision on what they hear. Ohio State is a mythical place up north to a lot of these kids where there are good football players. To see it in person is valuable."

A 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect with great speed, Gibson’s highlight tape brings back flashes of Terrelle Pryor for Ohio State fans. He’s also heard comparisons to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Though flattered, Gibson sometimes wishes he’d be more appreciated for his arm than his speed. Sure, his ability to escape pressure and get big gains with his legs is what makes him such a game-breaking prospect, but Gibson, a lefty, envisions himself as more of a pocket passer.

When asked what he wants to improve on the most, Gibson rattles off things like pocket presence, better timing on his passes and the ability to read defenses. Through the first part of his high school career, he’s gotten because of his athleticism. He helped Plantation to a state title because of his freakish ability.

But what’s ahead makes him perhaps the most exciting prospect in the 2015 class.

“I can honestly tell you that he has improved drastically now that he understands why he is doing what he is doing,” Rumph said. “Now Torrance is that guy. I have seen a lot of talent. I played in the NFL and I know what it takes. I have always challenged him from Day 1 to show me that you can sit in the pocket and go through your progressions and make correct decisions. He did all those things this year, and it’s crazy to think he still has another year with us.”
