Florida Gators (official thread)

Not to get too deep into the psychological profiling, but Kelly's an eccentric that doesn't seem to love recruiting. That can work in the Pacific Northwest. Not sure that's going to fly in Florida.

Can a hire be both a great hire and a trainwreck in waiting at the same time?

I believe Chip Kelly is a phenomenal offensive mind and college football head coach. This just doesn't feel like an environment, or league, where he can thrive -- kinda like the NFL.

I’d tend to agree. He doesn’t seem like the kind of coach that can just plug in anywhere and succeed. It seemed like he and Oregon were the perfect match. Not so sure about him in the SEC pressure cooker.

His dominance at Oregon also happened to coincide with USC, UCLA, and Washington all wandering the void zone of sanctions or irrelevance. A lot of people ignore that.

Not trying to beat the SEC drum too much, but athletic-wise, those defense are going to be closer to NFL than Pac12 on the spectrum.

Still love his offensive mind though. Good hire, good for Florida. It's worth doing and should be interesting.

Other things to consider:

1). I don't see Oregon as the type of program where Chip had to work the "rubber chicken circuit" too much. It's the exact opposite in Florida, especially Florida that needs to rebuild and is probably the 4-5th best team in the state right now.

2). Both Mark Richt and Jimbo Fisher are better recruiters than Chip Kelly

3). To his great credit, Chip Kelly scheduled OOC games from across the country. Michigan, Michigan State, LSU, Tennessee...etc
Didn't matter if it was neutral site or home and home - he played in big OOC games. That's in DIRECT contrast to the way Florida has operated for the past 25 years. I foresee a conflict.

4). He's kind of a prick right? There isn't really a Chip Kelly coaching tree as most coordinators don't tend to stick around.

It was well known that Chip was not fond of recruiting. That's not going to fly in the wildest recruiting conference and the most unstable state when it comes to verbal commitments and late drama (though it's been spreading nationally).

If UCLA-Chip Kelly news is true, where would that leave Florida coaching search?

Florida’s pursuit of Chip Kelly was in full force on Sunday, as athletic director Scott Stricklin, Florida President Kent Fuchs and four other prominent players in the University Athletic Association made their way to New Hampshire to meet with the former Oregon coach.

The group arrived back in Florida on Sunday night without Kelly, and while Stricklin would not confirm they met with Kelly, he did say there have been “a lot of productive conversations.”

With that said, reports came out Sunday night that Kelly wanted to listen to offers from UCLA after meeting with Florida officials. If a deal isn’t already in place between Kelly and Florida and he decides to take the new opening at UCLA, where would that leave the Gators in their coaching search?

Ok so it’s not the same, but go with it, Florida.
Tanned, rested and ready.

Kelly and Frost are.the big fish. If Chip wants to stay out west, and Frost goes home to NU, where does that leave Florida? Another group of five coach? That's not gonna sit well with jort nation.
Honestly I think there is one remaining biggish fish that I wouldn't hate if I were a Gator fan, and that's Matt Campbell out of Iowa State. But if not him or frost/Kelly, then I'd be bummed.

Report: Florida has 'moved on' from Chip Kelly in its search for a new coach

Chip Kelly won't be wearing orange and blue next season, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Yahoo's Pat Forde reported Saturday that Florida has "moved on" from Kelly.

Forde goes on to report that with Kelly out of the picture, Florida is now focusing on UCF coach Scott Frost, who has led the Knights to a 10-0 start this season, and has his team in position for a New Year's Six berth.

As for Kelly, if Florida is no longer in the picture, you would have to think UCLA is the clear favorite for his services. CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd reported earlier this week that Kelly is expected to decide on his future this weekend.
