FSU President refers to Samford (actually refers to reporter insinuating Samford) as a "Dip-shit" program.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State will appeal part of an NCAA punishment that would strip the school of victories in 10 sports, including as many as 14 in football. The university president called the penalty "excessive and inappropriate."

The best part is that the NCAA reserved to itself the opportunity to review the sanctions if any of the penalty was appealed or reversed. And the official report said that the vacating wins was done instead of adding more scholly losses, so the inference is if FSU tries to get the wins back, they will regroup and pound their ass with more sanctions like New Mexico State, or whoever that was that got hammered right before FSU.

The Gators I talk to think that it is going to be the most half hearted appeal in the history of appeals, so that TK can tell Bobbah - "I tried to dadgum reverse the wins thing coach, but they would not buy it". Exit Bowden to cheers of the FSU administration.

Last thing. In that same press conference T.K. said, "I mean, I figured out how to beat Florida,” Wetherell said. “I told them the other day – I’ve got the deal, man. I got the deal. We’re going to send a graduate assistant down to write a [paper] for Tebow, and go ahead and turn it in."

“And then we’re not going to tell anybody, until about the 15th of August. And we’re going to say, Oh, by the way, look what happened. Urban [Meyer] doesn’t know anything about this – he’s not involved. And the letter according to the NCAA – you think a violation occurred, not that it did occur, you think it occurred, you’ve got to sit him.

“Well, we’ve got the proof, we’ve the [paper], we’ve got the one he turned in, we’ve got the one the graduate assistant [did]. He violated the rules. He’s ineligible … now, they can redshirt him next year, and they may need to do that because they’re going to need a quarterback, anyway, in two years and that may not be a bad idea. But – that’s just not right. I mean, it’s just not right. That’s what’s the problem – it’s just flat wrong.”

Right after that the FSU P.R. guy shut down the interview.

What an ass!!! The FSU Academic Adviser no-showed the NCAA hearing and refused to be interviewed during the entire investigation. One of the tutors working for him who was involved in the scandal told the NCAA that the very same Adviser (Eugene Goldsmith) used to bring nole athletes to the tutor with instructions to help them with the on-line test answers or to make it "open book".

Yeah T.K. Why the Hell should FSU be penalized just because FSU employees orchestrated FSU tutors to help FSU athletes cheat to stay eligible?

Unpossible to believe!!!!

OK, the other thing is I have to ask you this question: How embarrassing has it been to see your whole athletic department go through all the crap it's gone through?
CP: It's a tough situation. We were kind of put in a bad spot. We've got to accept what we did. We're responsible for what we did and we've got to deal with what happened. It's a tough situation. Hopefully the appeal goes through. We'll see, but we can't change it right now so we've just got to deal with it.

I mean, it was only institutionalized academic cheating by 61 athletes over 10 sports. Shoot - it only went on over two years and three semesters and kept athletes qualified. "Dadgum it, how'm I 'sposed ta win if they don' hep me keep my boys on the field??? Ya caint watch Matlock all day an win the dadgum BCS with the NCAA breathin' down yoah neck..!!"

Sports fans say if only newspapers would have covered their favorite teams better, circulation wouldn't have dropped. Just as conservatives say if newspapers weren't so liberal, they wouldn't be in this fix.

The biggest reason is the billions of advertising dollars disappearing into the Internet. Things like Craigslist aren't Republican, Democrat, Seminole or Gator. The newspaper business model broke, and FSU picked a bad time to founder.

While it's been Emerald Bowl material, Florida has won two football and two basketball national championships. Which program would you cover?

And as sad as it is to see so many empty seats on press row, the real worry is the empty chairs at city council meetings and the like. If this were 1972, Richard Nixon might serve two full terms and retire to Mount Rushmore.

I never thought I'd see the day when sports information directors would thank us for covering basketball games. But then, I never thought I'd have so little ammo when an FSU fan blasted newspapers for favoring the Gators.

It is sad to see newspapers fold, and it is true that the experience and gravitas and financial backing of a major paper could bring pressure and clarity to an issue, like Watergate, which would not have been covered in the current financial climate and blogosphere. There would have been a thousand bloggers talking about the same things, quoting each ohter, and many even suggesting that Nixon was a crook, but nobody would have been doing investigative journalism and putting the pieces together in a way that would lead to Nixon's impeachment and resignation.

I disagree with your downplaying of the penalties , gator. The vacating of wins is especially painful to FSU given the joepa race. And I don't know how the scholarship losses break down, but I haven't read anything that says they are disproportionate to the involvement of each sport. Six schollies is quite a lot, and more than is usual for APR penalties.

Three athletes cheating academically resulted in the loss of 15 ships at New Mexico. FSU's cheating involved more athletes over a longer period and they lost squat, but got an excuse to launch Bobbah, which they wanted to do anyway.

I simply disagree.

I'll check out the report when I get computer access, but from reading the summary I note that (1) the unm case involved recruits and coaches and (2) I don't think they had to lose wins and suspend players

I'm not sure I'd call being subject to limits of 20 and 80 for a 3-year period a loss of 15 scholarships. Depending of their schollie breakdown, they may have only been able to take 20 some of those years anyway.

But I'm of the opinion that the NCAA should make FSU ineligible for a bowl game for a couple of years. It's obvious that all they care about is winning football games and Bobbah's record. The way they rearranged their schedule last year to put two cupcakes up front after they suspended the players in the academic scandal was very telling.

The NCAA doesn't like to keep schools off of TV any more, since it adversely affects their opponents. But I'd like to see them use the 'no bowl game' penalty to send a mesage. That could cost the rest of the ACC schools money, depending on how the conference fills their bowl bids those years, but that's correctable. The conference can change their rules to say that bowl revenue will only be split among teams that are not excluded from bowl participation due to NCAA penalties.

That way, FSU gets whacked, and only FSU receives a direct financial impact. But it just makes too much sense to ever happen.

I really don't agree that the wins race should be taken into account when penalizing FSU. By that logic, another school in a similar situation would have to be punished more heavily in other areas to even it up - more scholarships, say. Then you have FSU with zero wins and X scholarship losses, and the other school with zero wins and X-plus-Y scholarship losses. That's not right. Especially given FSU's renegade history.

I'm not saying the wins race was factored into the punishment, but rather that FSU paid a heavy price for this scandal
