It surprises me to say that other coaches need to look up to Bowden, who took the high road. Yet Pete Carroll could learn a lesson from the FSU coach.

Beat me to it... Here's the article from ESPN... Big blow for FSU

Seminoles suspend LB Nicholson, send him home

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top><!-- begin leftcol --><!-- template inline -->HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Leading tackler A.J. Nicholson was suspended by Florida State and questioned by police Thursday after a 19-year-old woman accused him of sexually assaulting her.
A decision on whether to charge the linebacker will be made following the completion of an investigation expected to extend into next week, police said. Nicholson was released by police and sent home by the team, which arrived Wednesday in South Florida to play Penn State in the FedEx Orange Bowl on Tuesday.
Coach Bobby Bowden said Nicholson was suspended for violating a team rule but declined further comment.
The woman called police at 3 a.m. Thursday and said she had been assaulted by a Florida State player, later identified as Nicholson, police detective Carlos Negron said. The alleged assault occurred at the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa, where the Seminoles are staying.
Nicholson went to the police station voluntarily and was questioned for two hours, Negron said. The woman also was interviewed by detectives and taken to a rape treatment center.
Negron declined to give further details because the case remains open.
Nicholson, a senior, has started every game the past two seasons and led the Seminoles this year with 100 tackles.

wasnt nicholson involved in some sort of altercation before the start of the season, which prompted the imfamous bowden quote of there being other forms of punishment aside from suspending players?

if so, then Bowden's hands were tied here. it was bad enough justifying not suspending him for miami, but he can't allow him to play in the bowl game as well.

Hasn't FSU had problems around bowl time in the past couple of years as well?

A suspension is certainly deserved...even if he didn't sexually assault a woman, he should know not to be in a situation that he could be accused of it.

Zurp I have misplaced my pants.

Normally, I'm all for the "Bowden doesn't discipline his players" side of the argument. But, with only the facts in this article, I don't know that a suspension is the right thing. The guy is accused of sexually assualting a woman. They shouldn't punish people for only being accused of a crime. Otherwise, what's stopping Ms. I-need-media-attention from going to Tempe and accusing Brady Quinn of sexually abusing her?

Perhaps there's more information than was in the article. Perhaps the LB has the ever-important "smoking gun," and it's an open-and-shut case, and he admits it, etc. But I don't know how people can know the guy is guilty just from that article.

That makes more sense. I agree 100% with punishing him for something that has been proven he's done wrong.

Yeah, lets just hope when FSU runs the ball all over FSU, the commentators wont keep saying, "these Linebackers just arent into the game after the suspension of Nicholson." - In similiar fashion to the way Roberson was shut down by OSU but was only shut down because the rape allegations.

I remeber when we chanted "No Means No!" to roberson when he took the field, felt like i was at a highschool basketball game. Nice to see he went home and didnt get off by running stairs at the hotel.

True, there is no way to know if he is falsely accused or should burn in hell until the details make it through the process. It's possible that keeping him off the field is horribly unfair... but if it is, he has much more to worry about than football in any case. And if he's guilty, he certainly shouldn't be out there.

I think these sort of administrative suspensions are necessary to protect schools' reputations. Not a good situation any way you look at it, though.

I have no tolerance for rape or any other physical or sexual abuse of anyone. Nevertheless, I think it is important to remember that this young man is innocent until proven guilty.

As for kudos for Bowden, with Gary Barnett still fresh in everyone's mind, rape is something that coaches will probably choose to err on the side of caution, and ignore at their own peril. I am very sorry for everyone involved.

I don't understand this comment. I think that USC, over the last few years, has handed down stricter punishments than Florida State.

Bowden is notorious for being lenient in disciplinary situations. I'm guessing that an internal investigation gave him no real choice in the matter this time.
