Former RB/ST Coach Dick Tressel (official thread)

I don't get you guys, as mentioned he was d3 coach of the year a while back. Being rb coach is not all just about coaching rb's, which btw I am sure he will be able to do without a problem. There is eeverything else (not just recruiting) breaking down film and helping with the offense. I would think that you guys would have witnessed by now that just because a guy is a position coach, he doesn't just coach that position.

Another thing, if coach T goes out and recruits a kid that we haven't heard of or doesn't quite have the blue chip credentials most everyone will say to trust his judgement and that he must have seen something in the kid to warrant the offer. I can't believe you trust his judgement with the kids and not with his brother.

I kind of thought the same thing when I heard the news initially. I wanted a young, vibrant coach that could relate to the players and help with recruiting. To be brutally honest I was hoping that they would hire an African American. This was met with a lot of questions and then we got into the age old argument of best man for the job.

Someone mentioned that Miami's rb coach has been there for over 10 years and is an older guy. They have done just fine with him. I guess if it can work at Miami it can certaibly work here. I have trust in Tressel and believe that he got the best guy he could condsidering the timing of Spencer leaving.

The only potential problem I can see is with recruiting. Jim's brother will be fine as a coach. He's got over 20 years as a head coach and some honors as well. As Maurice showed 2 years ago ... it's better to have a talented kid than a great position coach. There's only so much a coach can do (don't get me wrong coaches are important), but a player's talent level is a much greater part of the equation. We'll have to wait and see how he does with recruiting.

I'm pretty much in the same place most of you guys are- I was surprised to hear this, and initially nervous about it. I don't want to pass judgement either, and you do have to respect him for the experience he has. Also, I trust that JT knows what he's doing.

However, I was kind of wishing that we'd go get a former RB- people have mentioned Keith Byars, that might have been nice. It sure would be great if Eddie did decide to come back and coach after he retires. He's very talented, smart and seems like a good person. I think he'd make a good addition to the coaching staff.

I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. I don't understand why race should be an issue. And I don't understand this recruiting buisness--do you consider Spencer to have been a great recruiter? A lot of times, the position coach is not even the one who recruits the players at his position.

Here is a decent analogy......USC just hired Ken Norton Jr. as a Linebacker coach. Everyone knows who he is, as he has only been out of the NFL for a couple of years. He was a great player and a "name". It might be sensationalized a little bit, but it would be cool to tell people that you are being recruited and possibly coached by such a great contemporary player.

I'm with Nixon on this. Let's wait and see how he does, obviously, although I admire Spencer and there were some injuries to the RB's, one has to wonder whether the available talent was optimized last year. I don't see any effect on recruiting, if there is talent and Tressel (the older brother) can optimize it, then Tressel (head coach) will be a genius. If there is talent and he doesn't optimize it, well he's still a genius in my eyes.

I don't see the big problem with this hire. He has experience as a coach. While he will have some input, he's not the only coach that will recruit running backs. I've always believed that great players don't equal being a good coach. I'd rather have someone with coaching experience since we will have a new line, new QB, and probably rely on one of the young RB's to carry the ball some.

I have no concerns over the hire. His coaching is not an issue here and if his personality is similar to JT's, I can only see that helping recruiting by cementing the family persona being built for the program.

I guess I was hoping we would go after someone with a great RB background with the Buckeyes. IE Keith Byars.

I thought Dick was doing a great job of doing what he was doing and I don't really understand the move.

What is his background as a RB coach?

If he can get Mo Hall to stop running up the guard's backside, I'll consider D. Tressel a success.

Unlike most, I feel good about this hire, and I am encouraged by the fact that Jim Tressel promoted his brother. If you think about it, Jim Tressel is really putting his rear end on the line with this move. If I were him, I would have to be extra sure that he's the right guy for the job. Besides, D. Tressel would be less of an X-factor than an outsider, b/c Jim Tressel knows his brother's abilities and style better than he'd know pretty much any other candidate.

I think this hire is as much about coaching style and philosophy as it is anything. I would guess that Tress and his brother are on much the same page when it comes to what they do as coaches. It is crucial that there is harmony among coaches in what they are trying to accomplish. I see this as a good hire for that reasoning alone.

Truly a great hire. The more Tressel the more better. Keith Byars, great player but better at coaching than a 20 year plus Tressel, are you truly thinking this through or my guess, just trying to be controversial. Star players are use to being the center of attention, not saying any Ex-Buck RB would be a problem, but continuity in a coaching staff is vital. Also, a lot of Ex-player only know their own style and try to impose it on all they Coach. "It worked for me, it'll work for you." Others got through on natural ability not knowledge. Typical the great ex-player coaches are your over-achievers. If anybody on JT's staff is a question mark it is Jim Boll-smoker. I can't believe how much talent and experience we had last year on our O-line and they stunk. Cry about him!!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
