Big Ten discussing potential elimination of divisions as part of future football scheduling plans
By Scott Dochterman

January 26, 2022Updated 1:00 PM EST

The future College Football Playoff format could have a major impact on whether the Big Ten eliminates divisions or changes the number of its annual conference games, Iowa athletics director Gary Barta told The Athletic.

The Big Ten currently has East and West divisions and plays a nine-game conference schedule that includes three cross-divisional games. Big Ten administrators have discussed dropping to eight games beginning in 2023 so it can create matchups with teams from the Pac-12 and ACC conferences, with which the trio has a working arrangement called The Alliance.

There also are serious discussions about the Big Ten ending divisional play with schools playing three opponents annually and cycling through the other 10 teams either every other year or two years on, two years off.

"We've had several conversations," Barta said. "One of the things that we're watching is whether it's related to The Alliance, which we're talking through and/or, what gives us the best opportunity to have the most success in the College Football Playoff format?

"We’re wondering if we're going to know what the format is before we have to make that decision. So, we're kind of waiting to see where that lands. But we have had active conversations about the schedule beyond 2022."

College football: 10 future non-conference matchups we want to see

ALABAMA VS. OHIO STATE

11009100.jpg

We’ve seen this in the College Football Playoff but just make this a regular non-conference matchup. Nick Saban, the greatest college coach in the history of the game against Ryan Day, who coaches one of the top programs in the nation. Year in and year out, both schools are in the conversation for the Playoff so you might as well give the teams a test drive against each other to open up the season. With the talent on both sides of the ball on both teams going at it? This is basically an NFL game at this point.

Five more years.....:biggrin2:

2027: 09/18 Alabama
2028: 09/09 at Alabama

Ohio State had stopped scheduling games against FCS opponents since that matchup. Now, however, the door appears to be open for the Buckeyes to play FCS teams once again.

Youngstown State is now set to be Ohio State’s first non-conference opponent on the 2023 schedule, which also includes Western Kentucky (Sept. 16 at home) and Notre Dame (Sept. 23 away). Ohio State is currently slated to opened the 2023 season on the road at Indiana, but the Big Ten is expected to make adjustments to the 2023 conference schedule after already doing for 2022.

I'm just not in favor of playing FCS teams.

It’s such a minimal aspect of the final ratings, but I’m always in favor on non P5 teams in this instance. That slight margin in increased SOS could make a difference come selection time.

If a few things had broke our way, that Tulsa game could’ve been huge for OSU getting in (they should have beat Cincy at Cincy and that win becomes a nice resume booster for OSU).

Per the game contract for Ohio State’s newly scheduled non-conference game against Youngstown State on Sept. 9, 2023, which Eleven Warriors received Friday from Ohio State in response to a public records request, OSU will pay YSU $800,000 for next year’s game at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State was previously set to pay San Jose State $1.8 million to play at the Shoe on the same date. That game was canceled by mutual agreement between the two schools, and San Jose State is now to play at USC on that date.

OK, they are saving $1M by playing Youngstown in lieu of San Jose State.

I must have missed it, But what happened to the games against Boston College?

Ohio State and BC were previously scheduled to play in 2023 and 2024 and had already altered their game contracts once.

An OSU spokesperson confirmed cleveland.com that the originally scheduled series with Boston College for 2026-27 will be pushed back to the “early 2030s.” Dates have not yet been determined.

Apparently they went from 2023/2024 to 2026/2027 to sometime in the 2030s....:ohbrother:

The payout is in line with what Ohio State will play other non-conference opponents to play at Ohio State in upcoming seasons. While Youngstown State – a Football Championship Subdivision school – will only receive $800,000 to play the Buckeyes at the Shoe in 2023, each of the Buckeyes’ scheduled upcoming Group of 5 opponents will receive close to $2 million to make the trip to the Shoe.

The cost of playing a MAC school keeps going up.

Meh. When I become the king of NCAA football, I'm going to say you can't schedule games that far in advance. Wait until one season ends, and then the NCAA will schedule 2 games for you - a home game and an away game. They'll be based on creating big-name match-ups. Once those are set up, the conferences can create the conference schedules. Once those are complete, the teams can schedule their in-state patsies that just want $1.9M.
