Future Football Schedules (Updated 11/21/2023)

Move The Game to September?

I think we can all agree that The Game in September is better than no football.

I hope the powers-that-be understand that to be an utterly false dichotomy. There are many, many alternatives to moving the date of The Game.
I'm not sure how moving it does anything. Eating turkey/beating dUMb is a Thanksgiiving week tradition!

OHIO STATE WILL DISCUSS RESCHEDULING NON-CONFERENCE GAMES AGAINST OREGON, BOWLING GREEN AND BUFFALO, BUT THAT WON'T BE EASY

As a result of the Big Ten’s decision to cancel all non-conference football games for the 2020 season, Ohio State will not travel to Oregon or host Bowling Green or Buffalo this year.

Ideally, each of those non-conference games will still happen in another year.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Thursday that he had spoken with the athletic directors from all three of those schools and that they have all agreed to have discussions about hopefully rescheduling those games for future seasons.

“I called the three athletic directors today – Mark (Alnutt) at Buffalo, Bob (Moosbrugger) at Bowling Green and Rob (Mullens) at Oregon – and shared with them what our announcement would be. They’re all going through similar conversations in our leagues, so they were totally understanding, but I shared with them that I would call next week and see if we can try and reschedule,” Smith said.

Mullens said in a statement on Thursday that Oregon, who will also play no non-conference games in 2020 after the Pac-12 followed the Big Ten’s lead on Friday, has “agreed to have ongoing discussions about the options for rescheduling the Oregon home game in our series.” Moosbrugger and Alnutt both said in statements that it was “disappointing” their schools would be unable to play football games at Ohio State this year, but also said they understood that difficult decisions had to be made.

“The last time we played in the Horseshoe, our All-American linebacker Khalil Mack had one of the finest performances of any player in the country and it vaulted him into the national spotlight,” Alnutt said. “We were looking forward to having that opportunity again to showcase our program nationally. We will have continued discussions with Ohio State to reschedule this game in a future season.”

Thanks for rubbing that one in Alnutt. Taylor Decker really appreciates that.

I'll call "at Maryland" as the trap game, away game and wedged in between scUM and at Penn State.......

Nothing personal since I'm pretty sure neither of you invented it but I hate the term "trap game". It sounds like a ready-made excuse for not being ready to play.

I hate it even more when it's given as a "reason" after a loss. The reason is you didn't get the job done. Whether that was lack of preparation, proper mental focus, or just getting your asses handed to you, you lost.

On the flip side, for this season, Hairball can say Ohio State was a "trap game" when he loses again.

Since THE Game is outside of tradition this year anyway, put that game in prime time!

If they really wanna switch things up how about the game at Penn State NOT be in prime time?

Few things are worse than Pedsters who have been drinking for over 12 hours before kickoff. I've experienced it first hand.

That's basically the definition of a "trap game".

trap game
A trap game is a game played against an opponent generally deemed to be easy to defeat. As a result a person or team may not prepare as thoroughly as they would for a formidable opponent. Often this attitude and its attendant lack of preparation lead to a loss.

MICHIGAN GAME MOVED UP
Justin Fields didn’t care. On Tuesday, he said he wants to play Michigan whenever the Big Ten allows and “really just beat the brakes off them.” Wyatt Davis concurred, saying “we're going to beat the brakes off them” regardless of when the game is set to be played.

Now they have their answer, and it won’t kick off when it’s typically played.

Instead, the Buckeyes and Wolverines will do battle on Oct. 24 in the seventh game of a 10-game regular-season slate of conference games. Weird, huh? Not in the past 87 years has The Game been played earlier than November. It’s only been played on the 24th of October once, with that happening in 1908 when Michigan won, 10-6.

It’s hard to fault shifting the rivalry game around. The Big Ten wants it to be played if football is able to go forward. But does moving it to late October give the conference enough flexibility? There’s an argument to be made that it should’ve either scheduled the game even earlier in order to gain maximum flexibility or kept it at the end of the season for tradition’s sake. In a sense, putting it on Oct. 24 splits the difference between those objectives.

It should be noted that both Ohio State and Michigan have an open week on Nov. 14. So, perhaps that’s being kept open as a fall-back option in case things need to be moved around.

NO EXCEEDINGLY TOUGH BACK-TO-BACKS
Last year, the Buckeyes dealt with Penn State and Michigan in consecutive weeks to end the regular season. Two years prior, they had a Penn State-Iowa-Michigan State stretch. The year before, they faced Wisconsin and Penn State in a row.

Back-to-back games aren’t ever easy, even for a team with a roster as talented and deep as the one at Ohio State.

In the newly released schedule? The Buckeyes’ most daunting back-to-back games will either be Purdue-Indiana in September or Michigan State-Michigan in October. Neither of those pairings, however, should be particularly worrisome. As long as Ohio State plays up to the level it's expected to reach, it’ll be double-digit favorites in all four of those games.

UNDEFEATED SHOULD BE THE EXPECTATION
We can all be honest: This schedule sets up pretty well for the Buckeyes.

Six weeks in a row to start the season against teams that likely won’t end the season in the top-25 poll. A home game against Michigan. Only one tough road game – versus Penn State on Nov. 7 – and it’ll come in a usually hostile environment that’ll either be without fans or with a limited capacity. Multiple off weeks. No notably tough back-to-back weeks. Avoiding Minnesota and Wisconsin, which are widely viewed as the two best Big Ten West teams.

If Ohio State’s the team everybody thinks it is, then the expectation should be to run the table in the regular season. It’s go time.

So, where is the trap game?
Ohio State is far and away the most talented team in the Big Ten, and it’s the heavy favorite to again win the league for a reason. But with those upset losses to Purdue and Iowa serving as reminders, the rise in quality in the Big Ten means it’s critical not to overlook anybody in the league — especially because one bad loss can be a dealbreaker with the College Football Playoff committee.

When should the Buckeyes be on high alert then? A road trip to Maryland sandwiched between The Game and the likely East Division championship tilt at Penn State fits the bill. No, the Terrapins aren’t particularly well coached and the uptick in recruiting isn’t likely to pay dividends right away this season for a patchy roster. But the Buckeyes had a wild trip there two years ago when they weren’t at their sharpest, and it will probably be a challenge to stay focused on Maryland considering what Ohio State will have just been through and what it’s facing the following week.

Ohio State 52 - Maryland 51 in OT; Anthony McFarland ran for 298 yards, 2 TDs

Heck, every game is a trap game. tOSU has a big fat bulls-eye painted on their chests/backs every game. Hate to give up the non-conference games, because that's where the freshmen/RS sophs get some good minutes after the first teamers have put the game away. We're going to need snaps for the two freshmen quarterbacks, because who knows if Justin will go down with injury/Covid rolling into the game with Meatchicken or Penn State. At least we're more certain that the season will be played.......go Bucks!

1. Michigan at Ohio State in October is new, daring, and a change for the better. Just kidding. It’s fine for a one-time thing, but let’s not turn this into past one-time-only things like alternate uniforms. If the players don’t care about the move, maybe you shouldn’t either. Yes, we love it being the last game of the season, but the Big Ten felt it was just too much of a gamble. Putting it on October 24 gives them two open dates afterward in order to get it in if need be. And who knows, if things go poorly, maybe Michigan will be the last game on the schedule after all.

2. Purdue at Michigan to open the season looks pretty fun. The Wolverines have a good corner in Ambry Thomas and a good safety in Daxton Hill. Everybody else better strap it in. Michigan’s defense hasn’t been equipped to handle explosive slot receivers for a while now and Purdue is going to have Rondale Moore back and healthy. He won’t be the only receiver Michigan will have to deal with, as 1,000-yard sophomore receiver David Bell is back and has others along with him.

3. Ohio State’s early-season schedule is pretty underwhelming, but just like Michigan, the Buckeye secondary better be ready for week three at Purdue. Rondale Moore lit Ohio State up like a gasoline volcano in 2018, so there will be some personal challenges laid down in the Buckeye secondary prior to that game. The OSU defense needs to find two new starting cornerbacks — including the guy who will be seeing Moore in the slot. Or maybe for this one game Shaun Wade will move back inside. That would be a showcase the NFL scouts would like. But don't sleep on Purdue's outside receivers as serious threats. Or the tight ends. Or really anybody. Never forget 2018 and always remember the Alamo. (Don’t be surprised if this one turns into a pretty high-scoring contest.)

4. Before the schedule change, Indiana was looking like an 8- or 9-win team this year. Non-conference games against Western Kentucky, Ball State, and Connecticut were all going to be wins. Now those three wins are gone and the Hoosiers are looking more like a 5-win team. The Big Ten did them no favors with this schedule. They still have their season opener at Wisconsin, but then travel to Penn State. After hosting Illinois the following week, they then visit Ohio State. After a bye week, they go to Minnesota and then host Michigan. There may only be one win in there. And if there ends up being more than that, it will give head coach Tom Allen his best win at Indiana.

5. Michigan, Michigan State, and Rutgers are the only teams in the conference that don't play anybody coming off of a bye week. Of the 28 instances of a team playing somebody coming off of a bye week this season, 22 of them are B1G West teams. Meaning, teams have been given an extra week to prepare for those B1G West teams 22 times. Four of Purdue's 10 opponents come in off of bye weeks (one of the four is Rutgers). Nobody else has more than three such opponents. However, and make sure you alert your Penn State fan friends who understand that the Big Ten is out to get them, of the six times an East team plays somebody coming off of a bye week, half of them belong to Penn State. Meaning, three of PSU's 10 opponent's have an extra week to prepare. Of course, two of those Penn State opponents are Illinois and Maryland, so also quickly tell them to calm down.
