Former Ohio State men?s ice hockey goalie Cal Heeter completed his first NHL camp last week, and the Philadelphia Flyers remain impressed with the former Buckeye.

Heeter competed in the Flyers? Summer Development Camp last week, splitting time during scrimmages on Saturday and Sunday while helping Team Orange to victories in both contests. Heeter?s performance during the camp also resulted in praise from Chris Pryor, director of hockey operations for the Flyers.

Back in March around the time of Heeter?s signing, Pryor told The Lantern that he believed the player had great potential. Heeter began to deliver on that potential this past week at camp, which was attended mostly by young drafted players and unaffiliated invitees.

Heeter stood between the pipes during parts of Team Orange?s 7-2 win during the Saturday scrimmage and, in Sunday?s game, stopped two penalty shots in the final two minutes of his squad?s 6-5 victory, according to the Flyers? website.

During a Tuesday interview with The Lantern, Pryor said Heeter?s performance both on and off the ice during the camp was ?awesome.?

?He?s done everything he?s expected to. We?re very happy with him. He should be very happy with his performance,? Pryor said. ?He?s getting acclimated to the professional side of things.?

A two-year starter in the net for the Buckeyes, Heeter is third in OSU history in save percentage (.915) and goals-against average (2.58), eighth in saves (2428) and ninth in wins (39).

Heeter said he too was happy with his performance, but also said he still has work to do before the September camp where players will fight for roster spots.

?Workouts were tough and skates were fun and it was definitely a good experience,? Heeter told The Lantern. ?There was definitely a little rust. You?re not exactly in mid-season shape and ready to go as far as skating-wise, but I felt comfortable out there.

?It?s just a matter of making sure you?re ready for every shot that comes your way.?

After a solid rookie season for the AHL?s Adirondack Phantoms, Cal Heeter has been rewarded with a spot on Team USA?s roster for the 2013 IIHF World Championship.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Heeter went 12-16-3 for the Phantoms, posting a 2.92 goals-against average and .908 save percentage.

A standout at Ohio State University, the 24-year-old netminder stands at 6-foot-4 and will team up with for Binghamton backstop Ben Bishop (6-foot-7) to form what very well could be the tallest goaltending tandem the hockey world?s ever seen.

Heeter, Phantoms host Admirals
By Paul Post, The Saratogian

GLENS FALLS >> Cal Heeter grew up in St. Louis, where he was a big fan of Blues goaltender Grant Fuhr.

Some day, Heeter hopes to have an NHL career of his own, after perfecting his netminding skills with the Adirondack Phantoms that host the Norfolk Admirals at 7 p.m. Friday at Glens Falls Civic Center.

That’s where Heeter’s focus is.

But he showed up to Thursday’s practice wearing a St. Louis Cardinals T-shirt from their 2011 World Championship season. Things didn’t go as well for the Red Birds in Game 1 of this year’s World Series, an 8-1 loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday night.

“Now they’ve got the jitters out of the way,” Heeter said. “They’ll be all right.”

The World Series shifts to St. Louis on Saturday, but he won’t have much time to watch as the Phantoms will be in Binghamton for their second game in two nights.

Heeter, 24, is in his sophomore season at Adirondack where he posted a 12-16-3 record (2.92 goals against average) last year as a rookie. This year he’s sharing duties with the Yann Danis, the 2011-12 AHL Goaltender of the Year with Oklahoma City.

“It’s great having a veteran presence like that in the locker room and on the ice,” Heeter said. “He’s taught me a lot about preparing for games, taking care of your body, always being ready to play. I’ve picked up lots of valuable information from him.”

Heeter spent four years at Ohio State where he was team MVP as a junior
