JAQUAN LYLE NO LONGER PART OF OHIO STATE BASKETBALL TEAM, SPOKESMAN SAYS

JaQuan Lyle is no longer part of the Ohio State men's basketball team.

A team spokesman told Eleven Warriors on Saturday that Lyle "quit the team April 11."

Lyle is no longer listed on Ohio State's roster. No reason was given for his departure from the program.

Lyle was one member of Ohio State's five-man 2015 recruiting class which ranked fifth nationally. After his decision to leave the program, however, zero members of that group remain. Austin Grandstaff transferred midway through the 2015-16 season and then Daniel Giddens, A.J. Harris and Mickey Mitchell all opted to transfer at the end of that year. Lyle was the lone member to play his sophomore season for the Buckeyes, but his Ohio State career is now over, as well.

Lyle's departure leaves the Buckeyes with a massive hole in its backcourt. Ohio State now has just three scholarship guards on its roster in C.J. Jackson, Kam Williams and incoming freshman Braxton Beverly, but that's only if Williams opts to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft. He has until May 24 to do so and retain eligibility.

I definitely don't see the 2017/2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball Team recovering from the downward spiral after this. Sadly, I'm predicting that there will have a new head coach for the 2018/2019 season.

if lyle quit in early april, then he had pretty much two options: transfer or play overseas. if he wanted to transfer, then surely there would have been reports about interested programs and their communications. i can see his departure being hush-hush inside the program, but i can't at all see no news getting out regarding possible interest between him and other schools. on the other hand, if lyle wanted to play overseas, then surely there would have been reports regarding at least an agent contract.

the other explanation for the lack of news is that lyle quit but the staff believed they could reel him back in. however, upon learning about his run-in with the law, osu excused themselves by saying lyle actually departed a month ago. i don't know. this is just conjecture.

anyway, lyle gave every inclination before he even committed to osu that he would be a difficult student-athlete. that being stated, the rest of the 2015 class seemed for the most part mature before they were ousted, so the fault for the issues completely lies with matta and his staff. i've been a thad fan since he was hired, but it's patently obvious that the program has imploded and his ouster is imminent. the silver lining is that behind-the-scenes discussions with possible replacements can start as early as yesterday. most programs don't have the luxury of time.

I'd agree with most everything except the maturity part. None of us are there obviously, it is all conjecture. This generation of young people are extremely talented at appearing what they are not due to social media.

i agree that i probably overstated the maturity of the '15 class; however, kicking out four players from one class screams of it being more of a "me problem" than a "you problem." otherwise, that's just some really bad luck. if nothing else, matta failed by not vetting their character before offering or taking their offers. i have a hard time believing that they were that bad, though.

in regards to social media and young athletes, i'd say it goes both ways. there have been plenty of instances of social media removing the cloak. moreover, conventional media prior to twitter, instagram, etc. did an exceptional job in its own right of portraying the players as something they're not.

I think you hit your stride in that last line. This team may be destined for the B1G cellar next year. Could attendance be the lowest since moving to the Schott? My earliest sports memories are scrapbooking Buckeye basketball. Our family had warm relations with Coach Taylor.

I didn't watch a full game last year. I didn't watch any of the last ten or fifteen games. I have such incredible respect for what Coach Matta accomplished, but this program is going nowhere until his replacement is appointed and it is going to take one heck of a hire to get the boat moving quickly.

The next coach is going to have his work cut out for him. We can't even fill our scholarships out now, and the kids we have coming in don't appear to be the types you build around. The plus sides are that the new coach may look at all.the open schollies as an opportunity to build the team with his own players. And while it will certainly be a challenge, CBB is probably the easiest sport to engineer a quick turnaround with the right coach.

Lyle is kind of flaky. He quits, he's one hundred percent in, he warms up in different attire than the rest of the team, he respects coach's decisions, etc...he probably did enough on April 11 to convince everyone he had given up, but still entertained other notions on his own. Undoubtedly the Evansville incident effectively closed any door of return that was open.

What a joke. I hate hate hate to put this label on the entire program and each individual player involved, but this is a clownshow.

I don't even know what to think of the players that have transferred/quit/declared, because they themselves seem like they are disingenuous, but how does one program end up with this many headcases? Were they this way before or did is something else negatively changing their 20 year old minds? Chicken or the egg. I don't know. I mean, I'm talking back to 3 years ago when average players like Della Valle were looking for a foot out the door. So many players looking at the first exit out of Columbus. Is that a "you" problem or an "us" (OSU) problem?

Meanwhile, Indiana/Purdue/Illinois/Xavier/Butler are primed with coaches ready to own the midwest for the next 10 years. Yes, it's easy in CBB to get 1 or 2 players that can change the game, but with this competition in the region (not even mentioning L'ville/Kentucky)...sorry if I'm overreacting but this past off-season missing Archie could set us back a decade of Buckeye basketball. I'm out of frustrations.
