GRANVILLE ? Ty Burson has learned basketball from his well-known father, but he also has shown his dad a few things.
?(Ty) would be a good coach, being around my dad and myself who were so wrapped up in basketball,? said Jay Burson, Ohio?s second-leading all-time high school scorer, former Ohio State star and son of longtime Muskingum University coach Jim Burson. ?Does he have our vision and passion for the game? No. But he has better balance. I?ve learned balance from him.?
Father and son have come full circle at Granville Christian Academy, where Jay was former athletic director and Ty is a senior guard. Dad now is an assistant coach for the Lions and son leads them in scoring (14 points per game) against a more challenging schedule, designed to prepare the team for its third season in the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament.
Ty has a pair of 26-point games to his credit, including one in a win against Division III Cardington. He?s 5-foot-8 to his dad?s 6-0 and is not nearly the prolific scorer and player Jay was. However, he has come into his own for the 9-5 Lions.
?He enjoys the game and has some natural skills,? Jay said. ?It?s started to come together for him this year. He?s a late bloomer, and his older brother (Lee) was the same way. I was a no bloomer.?
Son shares some of the same traits as dad: work ethic, perseverance and overcoming a lack of size.
