Ohio State gets out early on players it targets for a football recruiting class, but coach Urban Meyer and his staff keep an open mind about seniors who are having a strong season.

“The Buckeyes are always looking for new guys to recruit,” recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic said.

Take the case of Mike Rogers, a defensive back/running back from Smyrna, Ga., whose stock is booming due to his prowess on both sides of the ball. Ohio State is among the schools that has taken an interest in the 6-foot, 180-pounder.

Rogers was little known when he committed to Central Florida during the summer. But through five games, he has more than 800 yards rushing, four interceptions and has returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. He also has picked up scholarship offers from at least 10 more schools, including Mississippi, Arkansas and Clemson.

Ohio State has yet to offer, but running backs coach Stan Drayton is expected to visit Rogers’ school and perhaps watch him play this weekend. If Ohio State makes an offer, Kurelic said Rogers — a native of East St. Louis, Ill., who has lived in Georgia less than two years — might jump at the chance to commit to the Buckeyes’ 2014 class.

Interesting....very interesting...NOT because he's not a great talent (i don't know enough about him to make that judgment). But because of the seemingly very tight numbers we have with many top players still on the board.

Edit: But in summary, anyone who this staff wants (and looks similar to Roby) would be good enough for me .

I wonder if this has something to do with the overall performance at the safety position especially considering the timing of the offer. To put it mildly, that position group has underperformed and I for one have been curious as to why no one else has been able to make it on the field, especially after the injury to Christian Bryant. Among the biggest issues has been missed tackles, so if this dude can solve some of those problems and put some pressure on a few of these other people that haven't been able to push for playing time, I am all for the offer.

MABLETON — Behind 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns from star running back Mike Rogers, Campbell beat Pebblebrook 35-26 and picked up its first Region 4AAAAAA win of the season.

Rogers, who entered the night as the leading rusher in all of Class AAAAAA, toted the ball a season-high 28 times while pushing his rushing total for the season to 1,129 yards.

“Mike Rogers is a really good football player, and we are very happy to have him on our team,” Campbell coach Harris Rainbow said of the Central Florida commitment. “The game was ugly at times, so we just rode him a little bit, and managed to come out with a win.”

Campbell’s Mike Rogers is the leading rusher in Class AAAAAA, but he does so much more.

Attention Cobb County high school football fans. Your time is growing short.

If you haven’t gone to see Campbell’s Mike Rogers play in a game yet this season, you are missing out.

The 6-foot-1, 184-pound Rogers is having one of those seasons that just isn’t supposed to happen anymore in the state’s highest classification. He is currently leading Class AAAAAA in rushing with 1,147 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is seventh in Cobb County in tackles with 63. His three interceptions is one off the county lead, and he has already returned a kickoff for a touchdown, too.

These kind of numbers are truly the exception to the rule, considering many of the schools in Class AAAAAA have upwards of 80 to 100 players on a team. Players at those schools don’t play on both sides of the ball — let alone running back and safety — unless they are a truly special athlete, and Rogers seems to fit that mold.

Spartans coach Harris Rainbow has consistently called Rogers the best player in the state. The Central Florida commitment is trying to prove him right.

Wow, this kid definitely fills up a stat sheet. Wonder if we can take him and erick smith at S. But the more I read and watch this kids film, the more I want him on our defense.
