Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

I'll ask my buddy who works for them, he'll probably tell me more than I want to know

side note: i had 5 penn state fans tell me "We won this weekend" in that tone like 'pfft...we won, why couldnt you?'. this is how fucking stupid penn state fans are.

Their fans were absolute assholes the only time I went to Happy Valley the year we lost huge. I have no plans ever returning there, or at least in the near future. On that note I don't care about the fastest way there, I'll take the slowest

probably a helicopter, but the 71N, 76E, 80E is probably the quickest way. Going the night before and getting a cheap hotel (stop a few miles before state college) is probably a very good idea.

I agree. When I have to travel in the area, I usually stay in a Holiday Inn off 80. I forget the exit number, now. My map only shows the old exit numbers (Old Exit 23). That's route 150. 220 looks like its also that exit. And it looks to me from my map that 150 goes right into State College.

Just take 71 north for a bit until you smell cow shit, then hang a right.
You have to be careful with those kind of directions, if the wind is blowing from the northwest the smell of shit can become so powerful that it disorients people....he could end up turning left and driving to Indiana or worse...you know where he could end up...and we don't want that happening.

As promised. My friend runs the GoPSUsports.com website. He says this is all you will need: Stadium Guide (pdf).

Here is a seating chart. Visitor sections are NK and NJ in the lower deck, and NK and NL in the upper deck.

NK lower view:

NL upper view:

Parking looks like a hassle. I remember parking in a cow field well away from the stadium every time I've gone....and it was a different field each time. That's not a problem though because you can see the stadium from where ever you park....theres nothing but grass between you and it. There's a parking guide in that pdf.

Tailgating is pretty straight forward. He says you can just wander around looking for other OSU fans or go downtown and get heckled by idiot stater fans. I don't think it is advised to wander into PSU tailgate territory...as they will likely be 5-0 and in full dip shit Penn State mode.

That website should also be updated a week before the game to get the Game Day Advisory, which will tell when things open and things like that.

PSU fans can be bad to visiting fans ive heard and to players. one of my buddys that played in the early 90's said that was his first road game he got to travel on and the way the visiting team comes out of the tunnel is right next to concessions and fans. He said some old lady spit right in his face, it is a bad set up all the way around they can touch you protection is limited. Ive heard of some bad visiting fan treatment as well.

They are some of the worst by far...I'll probably never go to Happy valley again...security is minimal. Seeing pics of it just makes me wanna puke

Never miss a chance to blanket everyone, do you? :shake:

Oh well...the bad blood is mutual, in any case, and they say the same thing about Ohio State fans when they're delusional too (like all the shit that got talked in 1994 before that particular game). I'm embarassed to say the fan behavior now is a lot worse than when I was there, and has gone downhill since they started losing. I think that happens everywhere, though, and there were many a Saturday during the Bellisari era that there wasn't much to be proud of in the fan behavior department at Ohio Stadium, either, though many Buckeyes conveniently forget that (and I don't blame them for wanting to...I sure do). It just depends on who you run into, and when...night games will also be worse across the board, because everyone has been drinking all day (just ask the Texas fans).

EDIT: security has been upgraded since the early 90's, but I haven't been there recently, so I can't vouch for the current state of it. I know they were working on it when I was there.

Making amends
Paterno conciliatory with media, mum on Conner

Posted: Tuesday September 20, 2005 6:45PM

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State coach Joe Paterno on Tuesday struck a conciliatory tone with reporters over remarks he made two weeks ago that he didn't like the media anymore.
During his news conference on Sept. 6, Paterno said he missed the off-the-record chats he had with reporters on Friday nights before football games, a practice that ended last year.
"I can't trust you guys anymore," he said at the time. "I am just being honest with you. It is no fun." He said he loved coaching and working with players, though "I don't like you guys anymore."
After joking with reporters near the end of his news conference on Tuesday, Paterno brought the subject up again. "Hey, we've got to have a little fun," he said. "A lot of you guys I think took my remarks about not being around you ... I feel bad about that."
"I know what kind of job you guys got. It's a tough job," Paterno said Tuesday. "I got a tough job, you got a tough job. And once in a while, you write things that I think you're jerks, and once in a while I say things and you think I'm a jerk. OK? But that's the way it works out."
CONNER'S STATUS

Linebacker Dan Conner's status has been one of those topics that has miffed Paterno in recent weeks.
"I'm not sure yet what to do with Dan. Dan has got to earn his job," Paterno said.
Paterno suspended Conner indefinitely after the school alleged that the linebacker made harassing phone calls to a retired assistant coach. Conner had been temporarily barred from the team by university administrators, but was allowed to practice again last week.
Under conditions of that university punishment, Conner wasn't eligible to play again until after last Sunday, meaning he could technically be available for this week's game against Northwestern. Conner, last year's second-leading tackler, isn't listed on the depth chart this week.
"He practiced yesterday, he'll practice the rest of the week and we will go from there," Paterno said. He praised Tim Shaw, who was moved from the middle to outside linebacker after Conner was suspended, for his play. Shaw leads the team with 30 tackles and three sacks.
Paterno said Shaw currently plays inside in some schemes, and outside on others. "He is a good athlete and we are trying to get the most as we can out of him," he said. I don't see any reasons for us to change up on him."
EZ DOES IT: E.Z.

Smith appears to be emerging ever so slightly from Paterno's doghouse after an incident in January in which the Penn State center shot arrows through a dormitory wall.
University police said the arrows caused no injuries but did about $700 in damage. He had been booted from campus temporarily, but was allowed to return to campus at the start of the fall semester.
Paterno said Smith, who was last year's starter at center, would play this week but would not start. Lance Antolick has started the first three games at center this year and Patrick Weber is listed as the top reserve.
"Right now E.Z. Smith's situation is strictly whether he is good enough and I am not sure he is better than the guys ahead of him," Paterno said.
TURF ISSUES

Penn State is replacing the natural-grass turf at Beaver Stadium after divots popped up on the field over the team's first three games.
Workers began removing the old turf on Monday and the new sod is expected to be in place later this week, spokesman Jeff Nelson said. Penn State plays its first road game of the season on Saturday against Northwestern.
The Nittany Lions' next two home games are Oct. 1 versus Minnesota and Oct. 8 against Ohio State.
Chunks of turf began to pop up on the field during Penn State's season-opener against South Florida three weeks ago. Over the last couple weeks, during timeouts, workers have run out on the field to put them back into place.
"In so many cases, [opposing head coaches] say to me, 'We love to play on this field," Paterno said. "All of a sudden we have three games where the field has been ripped up. I don't know why.
"Has it had an impact on the game? I doubt it," Paterno said.
JIM SHAW BACK

Defensive tackle Jim Shaw, who missed the last couple of weeks with a right knee injury, should be back for the Northwestern game, Paterno said. That should add some depth to a defensive line that manhandled Central Michigan last week.

I think this will be a defining game for our team. I am a huge Smith homer, but think he still has a little more to prove (the starting job is his, I mean prove that we are still a NC contender).

Smith's best games were against Michigan, Iowa, Indiana. Iowa's defense has big names, but with that terrible of a DL they become an average defense. Therefore Smith's better performances were not against the toughest opponents.

Zwick also made us look great, but OkSU and Miami are not good at defense. Zwick looked good against Texas, but our offense didn't (dropsies, lack of execution).

This will be our first road test, after a bye week, in one of the most hostile stadiums, filled with overexcited homers (given their record). This is the best defense we've faced since Purdue last year (we know how that went).

The painful thing is that I doubt Tressel will be very aggressive if we get a lead early on. However, even if our playcalling is frustrating, it will still be a good chance to see how we execute. We can't drop/misthrow easy passes, jump offsides, get stupid penalties, etc. If we can play a clean game with decent efficiency on offense, I will be very pleased.

This is the game I 've been worried the most about all year. PSU always plays us tough, and our road nite-game record is not so good. The bye week should really help us. The worst part is I HAVE TO BE IN A WEDDING THAT NIGHT. FUUUUUUCK!!!
Go Bucks.

PSU is a tough place to play, but wow have they given away a lot of turnovers...
Penn State turnovers
With three interceptions thrown against Northwestern, Penn State is tied with UL Monroe for dead last in the nation in turnovers lost giving away 13 so far. Even so, the Nittany Lions are still 4-0.

I'm also in a wedding that night. Fortunately it's in Pittsburgh so I will still get to here the game on the radio.

PSU has played well and is undefeated. They have had this game circled on their calender all year being a night game against the Bucks. They will come in pumped up.

But they have not been tested (Northwestern is a fluke) and will fall offensively to our Linebackers and Secondary.:scum4:
