Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

Good post Saw, but I do not think every fan who thinks there needs to be some changes are bad fans. I for one think Ohio State has too much talent to lose to a good not great Penn State team. Do I think we need a massive over haul... heck no, but some changes needed yes.

Well for me personally it would be like this;

One of my guys is underperforming then no one is threating to fire me, but its my job to either go fix him or get somone else to do the job if the first person can't do it.

Now if a trend of say 5 years in length appears and shows that I am having more than my share of problems getting guys to produce when they are not all completely incapable then they are gonna start looking at me.

Now hopefully they look at me the way I look at my guys and think first and foremost "OK, what have I done wrong or not done enough to help him do his job well?" Not look at me and just instantly want to fire me on a knee jerk reaction.

Thats the attitude I want the new AD to take and approach JT along the lines of "OK Jim who can I go get for you to make this offense work? How can I help you get us to an acceptable level of performance in this area because the status quo is no longer acceptable?"

no I agree. I moreso was referring to the Tressel responsibility for Smith. I think Tressel is much more to blame for the offense (due to what he does or doesn't do to change his approach and staff) than Smith's woes.

Ohio State does not have a coaching staff worthy of being at Ohio State.

In particular, Joe Daniels, Jim Bollman, and Dick Tressel. Those three need to be gone, IMO.

I have watched the game 3 times now and I was unfair in my criticism of Troy Smith last night. He sucked, but the offense was unbelievably predictable and stale. If that's what that staff comes up with as a game plan after two weeks of preparation, then someone needs to go.

I'm not giving up on our season by any means but I woke up this morning and one of the first thought I had was... "Damn Chris Wells is here next year, and we'll have a great O-line"

For sure it won't matter if we don't get someone to mix the play calls up and not get Chris or Antonio killed. Even though we lose two players next year on our O-line Cordle can replace mangold, and we all know we got alot returning besides them two leaving.

Anyhow I'm also done being very pissed off, and I guess we just lost to a very good team! GO BUCKS BEAT MSU

Ok guys I know right now you guys are only looking at the negative sides of this since we lost, but I am going to give you some things to look at. Maybe you won't like them but here it goes.

Did we as fans over look the talent that PSU actually has b/c they have been down for a couple of years. Yes, I believe the team did too. Their LB is dead even with Hawk for best lb in the country.

After Barton went down our line was dismantled all nite. We had two starters out with Rehring and Barton and they were harrasing smith all nite. 5 sacks.

It is hard for the offense to move the ball when they are putting us in 2nd and 3rd and longs.

We tried for the big plays, we went down the field with play-action we tried a couple option passes which is basically a type of pa where you try and bring the safties up.

Another thing, we need someone at te to get hamby out of the game. Not a knock on Hamby but you could just tell by the way he got beat on that last play that he was dead ass tired, from blocking all game and running routes.

I know you guys are really upset after this game which I am too but it was a great old fashioned big ten football type of game. Two of the best defenses in the country going toe to toe and blow for blow. They beat us at our own game. Tresselball, they let us beat ourselves by making us turn it over.

I don't know if any of you watch any of that pac-10 shit but where the hell is the defense. I bet everyone of those offenses is way ahead of us, but hell they are playing against air it seems like. UCLA and Cal 49-41. That is just ridiculous.

I love big ten smash mouth football.

Guys we looked at the Texas game b4 it and thought that both teams were evenly matched and that we would win b/c we had homefield advantage, well guess what we come up just short. Last nite PSU took advantage of the homefield. This was like their damn superbowl, I think they will lose 1 or maybe 2 more, just b/c they based their whole season on this game and they will fill their heads.

Collegefootballnews analysis spot on....

That Penn State won this contest was not a shock.

No, what was surprising was that Troy Smith didn’t commit more turnovers. On a night when Ohio State’s offense was poor in every single respect—the line got pushed around, Ted Ginn played tentatively, and Antonio Pittman lacked the authoritativeness he displayed in a recent win against Iowa—one might have thought that an OSU loss would come about not because of impotence, but mistakes... multiple mistakes in a horror show of giveaways that repeatedly set up Penn State scores. But that only happened once, as Penn State got only seven points off Buckeye turnovers. It was shocking to see Penn State’s defense smother Ohio State’s offense so decisively. Perhaps the Lions figured to get an occasional three and out, but the blueshirts made Ohio State and its assemblage of playmakers trudge off the field in three plays with astonishing regularity on Saturday. The Buckeyes’ offensive talent isn’t good enough to ring up big numbers against each and every Big Ten opponent, and Jim Tressel’s style of play ensures that the Bucks won’t roll up the points each and every Saturday. However, it’s just as true that Ohio State’s offensive talent is not so bad that the Scarlet and Gray should get bageled, and bageled rather easily, over the course of a whole half of football. An offense that had supposedly grown—and which was coming off a bye week, perfect for implementing new wrinkles and exotics against a much-studied opponent—showed surprisingly little game, astonishingly little fight on the road in Beaver Stadium. In a trend that’s becoming all too familiar for Ohio State fans—and even Jim Tressel supporters have to look in the mirror on this one—the Buckeyes have once again lost an early-October road night game in conference play, one that came after a bye week. After “Madison ‘03” and “Evanston ’04,” the Bucks—particularly their offense, came up with another annual display of impotence called “State College ’05.”

I will admit that PSU was better than I thought, at least on defense. Offensively, we shut them down...their freshmen WR trio were little of a factor. This was their NC game while for some reason we looked flat. They are a very good team, but if last night's game were in The Shoe, we win by two TDs. That being said, they could very well run the table, which was an inconceivable thought at the beginning of the season. And that leads me to my next paragraph...

I, for one, will not be rooting for PSU when they play scUM. scUM has two conference losses already, so they are already out of the conference picture, whereas we need PSU to lose a game to have a shot at the title. Note that I bolded "we need", as in the team and we fans. I hate having scUM win any game, but I always put the needs of our team over anything else. So, if I have to hope they beat PSU, so be it.

Win or loss I always remember this

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."
- Gen. George C. Patton

Some general thoughts after the PSU game

I watched the game last night from a box while entertaining some politicians and donors. There was a little business going on but I saw most of the game. I even met Jay Paterno and Galen Hall the day before. Jay appears to be a token but Galen was a great conversation and student of football. He spent most of the time talking about his NFLE days.

Anyway, here are my observations. Take them with a grain of salt because I walked away being very impressed with the Penn State program and feeling a little flat about our progress over the last four years.

Both teams appeared to be fired up to me. I think JT is much like a drill instructor who does not preach emotions either way so you don't see much of it on the field and that can be interpreted as our guys not being fired up. However, you see it in their actions.

Our offense: I was able to easily read our sets....and I have no clue what I am talking about. The play action is a great example. PSU played Cover 2 very often and their safeties were inside the hashs because those are our passing tendencies due to TS's average arm (I will get to that) and as close to the line as they were for Minny. We would run PA (and everyone knew it) but they would not bite. Further that required TS to act out the PA for 1.0 -1.5 seconds cutting down his read time. It seems that has been a fault of the scheme/playcalling for four years.

I credit JoePa for hiring Galen Hall and trusting him. Once upon a time he trusted nobody, including freshmen. That has changed. I like that JT is not afraid to trust the freshmen.

Variety: I don't recall a Screen, toss/sweep, TE seam/post, wheel or even a counter. Mind you I did not see every play so I could be wrong. My point is that over the course of the season we don't seem to do this often. Why? I don't know because I know less about footbal than JT has forgotten but these other teams (succcesful teams) do it well.

Execution: I don't know what to say here because it's nearly impossible to know as a fan and observer outside of practice. I know it's easy for the coaches to claim that players don't execute. I think it's just as easy to believe that coaches that continue to claim players don't execute must not be coaching their kids real well! We know based on statistical proof that our defense executes. We know we have outstanding defensive personnel. But we have outstanding offensive personnel as well. Here's what I saw:

Receivers were open...often.

The O line protected the QB. Not always, but enough.

The O line opened holes.

Our RB(1) displayed good vision...good enough.

The QB did not make his secondary and tertiary reads.

The QB did not "feel" the pressure. And I don't think he was using his pocket clock.

The QB did not throw away the ball rather than get sacked.

The D line pressured the QB very well but MRob eluded the secondary pursuit very easily. Thus we stopped the pressure.

Personnel: I believe we have more talent overall than PSU. They certainly have young playmakers but our guys (IIRC) were rated higher. However, they are either not executing or not getting coached well enough.

Pittman; say what you want but I think he is a VERY VERY good back. He is not running behind a well coached O line but he is making yards. In Minny or Wisky or NW he would rush for 1700 yards.

Ginn: Not sure what happened here. And I don't blame him completely. On the PR and KR coverage we are not setting up the wedge and therefore teams are playing lanes because he will look to run at the sidelines. Good scouting by the opposing teams. WR: He is not running bad routes and was open OFTEN last night. Of course, he is dancing too much...again I will refer you to coaching rather than executing. BTW, I did not see much double coverage on him, just standard safety help based on the routes....nothing Ginn specific.

SA: He is hurt, no doubt in my mind.

AG: He was also open.

Hamby: I really don't want to say anything negative here but I think we all get it.

Mangold: Solid as usual.

O line: Tough for me to call out any other names because they were rotating from what I could hear from the TV in the box. From our viewpoint they were getting rushed pretty hard and had some breakdowns but I saw plenty of well blocked runs and plenty of protection. Case in point...the pick.

TS: I don't even know what to say. One of the most disappointing performances since SteveB. He is clearing not making his reads. There were many open recievers. However, I will also gives credit to the opposing DCs. TS's arm strength is an issue IMO. I know he can throw it "hard" but he has trouble completing the 10-15 yard outs without trying hard to throw it. Seems like last night he floated his outs and the ball was not wet. He looks more comfortable throwing between the hashes. I believe DCs have charted that tendency and that's why they are narrowing the safeties in their zones. He'll force them into WRs on slants and seams.

Finally, Tresselball. It can work. It can work with this team. But it can only work when you have the most amazing Defense in college football and play flawless offense. Our current team can only do one of those things. I am certain that he thinks that we should have won that game. Had we not turned over the ball in our own Red Zone and missed that FG we would have won. However, with our poorly coached offense or poorly executed offense (depending on who you believe) we can't win these games against the top rated teams. We have to resign ourselves to 8-3, 9-2. That's what Tresselball is. 2002 was an anomaly and a gift to savor....at least until there's a change. The question you have to ask yourself is: is this good enough?

Some of those sacks Smith didn't have to take.

When Boone came in at Tackle and Sims moved back to Guard we look good except for Ham-Bone Whiffing on the last offensive play.

I said it last week Kirk Barton is our best lineman, yes the Best!!

Anyone have a update on his injury?

Naa, Smith had alot of time to throw the ball. Keep in mind that PSU does have a good D-front and good linebackers. With that in mind, I thought the line did a decent job of pass blocking. Still just saw alot of short, and bad routes, very predictable, not alot of open receivers. I am sure some of it is Smith not seeing those receivers, taking off running too early, whatever. There is definitely no 1 problem with the team. The offense is the problem, but there are many sub-problems to that.
