Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

very good write up... great post..

I must say I agree with absolutly everything you've said. Especially about Tony Pittman, and Troy Smith.

I saw Pittman Running very very hard and had great vision. LIke you said if he's running in minnesota's offense forget bout it he's running for around 1,500 yards a season.

I also was very very impressed with Penn States program and the way they've turned things around.

We did do one screen pass, but the rest the plays you have listed I didn't see them either. Thats whats frustrating about our offense. There's so many options that we can chose but we usually just do the same plays over and over. You're correct I too was able to see just about everything that our offense was going to do just by the way they lined up. For sure I was also able to see the same for penn state. Both offenses were very predictable. Another thing that boggles me is does it seem like 1 player each game has a big game? Like it was Gonzo against Iowa, Hall against Miami, Holmes against Texas. Why can't we get EVERYONE involved everygame? theres no reason why each of our talented players don't see the ball 3 times a game. If we do that it makes our offense that much more harder to stop. It seems simple, and with the right play calls its surely not impossible.

I am very hurt after this loss. I thought I was as hurt as I could ever be after Texas but honestly this hurts worse. A national championship would have been nice but a Big Ten championship is the most important thing. You have to go one step at a time. We definitely still have a shot at it. That's the good news. As for the team. I love our defense to death. I feel the same way as I did after the Texas game in that I feel sooo bad for our defense and those seniors because the offense just isn't doing their part. And as for Tresselball. I am a firm believer in his system. It has worked in the past and it can win us another NC in the future. But as you have already said it takes flawless play on offense and perfect special teams. Josh Huston is a hell of a kicker and I'm grateful to have him (We could have Rivas from Shitigan). But I feel bad for him for missing these key kicks. As well as he is doing, the style of football we play takes damn Near 100% from him. He hasn't come through on two occasions now. Like I said it may be too much to ask from him to be Hugent, but that's what it takes. When we won the NC in 2002 we had a brainiac quarterback and a hell of a running back. I think Pittman could carry the load and he does when he gets the ball. There in lies the problem. Troy Smith should only run the ball when he is out of throwing options. I don't like the planned runs with Troy out of shotgun. If we're gonna run the ball it should be with Pittman. He is the running back. Overall I think we played decent but nowhere near good enough to win a game against a good team. I think we have to stick with Troy because he is the leader and you have to stay with him win or lose. That being said he needs to get his shit together...that's two games now we have lost because, among other reasons, Troy can't make good decisions with the game on the line. He better show me something this week, that's all I have to say about that. On a final note. We WILL win the Big Ten and I still have all the confidence in the world in our captains and coaches to get us another BCS win.

Go Bucks!!

nice post, ugabuck. i agree with most, if not all, of what you wrote.

one of my biggest problems with the game (note: one of) was that no running game was attempted to be established in the second half. for many teams, a passing game is only as potent as the running game's threat can be. it appears that we ARE one of those teams, as long as troy smith is the quarterback. while i've always had my reservations about troy smith as a passing quarterback, it has now become obvious to me that he is not comfortable throwing the ball. so, if we're going to run a spread offense that attempts to throw the ball as often as we attempted in the second half last night, troy should not be the quarterback. i'm not saying that troy should not be the quarterback in general; i am saying that the current offense does not fit his style. i'd like to see more options, more roll-out passes, bootlegs, and naked bootlegs. we need to get troy out of the pocket. he is not a pocket passer.

in general, i think that we can have a very good offense. we just need a quarterback that can run our offense. that's it. plain and simple. all of the pieces that we need are there -- except for quarterback. that's a pretty huge piece, though.

the more that i'm thinking about it, the more that it upsets me that tressel runs a SPREAD OFFENSE with a quarterback who has POOR VISION. surely tressel knows that troy's vision is lacking. tressel has mentioned in at least one press conference that troy must work on going through his progressions. why in the world would he run an offense that is counterintuitive to the quarterback? isn't a spread offense only effective if its run by a good passing quarterback? troy does not run like vince young can, and vince young is also a much better passer than troy.

just what kind of passer can and should troy be? could someone help me out here?

No idea. I stopped playing football before the Run n Gun and Spread came along. My undereducated opinion is that the Spread is a formation or a mindset. To me, we view it as a formation. We use it to run counters and counter-sweeps with AP. To a team like NW it's a mindset and they recruit for it and run out of it 90% of the time. Fundamentally, I believe that's a big difference. I don't see us lining up in a Spread formation with TS very much. If we did he might be more successful.

agree the thing that bothers me the most is we never hit a reciever in stride, so our speed is not utilized. I mentioned this about ts several weeks ago, he locks on one reciever and if not open he gets the happy feet. Penn state did exactly what osu was trying to do make our qb beat them throwing the ball.

it's interesting when one compares robinson's stats to smith's stats:

similarities (and they're strikingly close):

- robinson was 11 for 20 (55%); smith was 13 for 25 (52%).
- robinson rushed 14 times for 52 yards; if you take away the sacks, which count as rushes, and the resulting losses in yardage, smith rushed 15 times for 49 yards.
- robinson threw for no touchdowns; smith threw for no touchdowns

differences:

- robinson was never sacked (!!!!!!!!!!!!!); smith was sacked 5 times
- robinson threw no interceptions; smith threw one
- robinson never fumbled; smith fumbled once

i hate playing the blame game, especially when it is targeted toward one player, but it is obvious to me why osu lost last night.

do we go back to zwick? if it is claimed that osu should, then i suggest that one does his own statistical research on zwick. his touchdown-to-interception ratio is horrible, too.

Last year, weren't a lot of people demanding that Tressel run a spread offense with Troy Smith at the helm?

perhaps. i don't know. i didn't live in central ohio last year (east long island, which is not exactly buckeye country), nor did i venture to the message boards. while troy running a spread offense might have been something the fans were clamoring for, i don't think that it's a fit. at least it's not a fit right now. you'd think that it would be an ideal marriage: a spread out offense and a mobile quarterback. obviously, there is much more to it.

i wonder how often troy ran this offense during the offseason.

So he's entirely to blame for the offense, but can't receive any recognition for the defense. brilliant as usual. yes I realize he calls the plays. Lloyd doesn't do either, but somehow he's blamed or praised for both.

Could be good..could be bad. If you guys really think JT is going to let someone else control the game, I'll take a cup of what you are drinking please.

I agree, I don't see Tress letting someone else make the calls unless things become ABSOLUTELY DEESPERATE. By desperate I'm talking LOSING SEASONS. I think we could benefit from someone concentrated solely on the offensive side of the ball calling plays, but I don't question what he does. 43-9, Nat'l Championship, 3-1 vs. scUM...'nuff said.
