Game Thread Game Four: Ohio State 31, Iowa 6 (final)

Compared to Texas, I think the Iowa game will be a better. Think about all that is riding on this game for both teams. For Iowa, they have to prove that last year was not a fluke. Everybody's been building this team up since then. I think last years game was a fluke because we were still down from the previous two games and not playing at home for any team in the big ten sucks. Iowa's got defense compared to Texas. I dont follow Texas football that offten (or at all for that matter) but who do they have? Ill be sure to research this a little more though. Us, we got some "splaining" to to do. Our hearts just weren't in it. Who ever said something about T. Smith was right. He has to prove that he was the man for the job then and now. Which I think he will. I'm not trying to knock Texas, but for all that this game has going for it I think the Iowa game will be better than the Texas game.ps. carpenter and hawk will play tag-team on drew tate's dome piece. Go Bucks!

Tate was able to pick us apart with short and intermediate routes last year because our corners played so far off the line. Now that Youboty has blossomed into one of the top lock-down corners in the country, I think you'll see a lot of tight man-to-man coverage, meaning Tate will have to wait longer for recievers to get open--if they even get open--and he won't be able to rely on underneath routes. Our DL is also way better now than they were in the middle of last year, and thus will put a lot more pressure on Tate. The improved secondary coverage will allow the Hawk and Carpenter to guard the corners against Tate's scrambling. With the crowd wanting serious payback, I think we hold them to under 20 points easily...

Keep in mind what we did to teams with our DL in 2002. I'm not saying Iowa's 04 line was that good, but it was clearly very talented. They lose their entire starting four, and have had a rough spring with injuries to their depth at DL.

Hodge and Greenway are studs at LB and deserve their hype. However, Hawk & Carpenter were probably pretty comparable skill wise going into the Iowa game. Without much success up front from the youngsters, our LBs were rendered useless. Most of us buckeye fans expect the same early season woes for Iowa.

I do not expect that we will walk all over Iowa by any means. Personally, I feel this will be our toughest game despite a big challenge in Happy Valley. Tate is a stud at QB and will challenge our defense even with our improved secondary.

One key I see to this game? Jamario O'Neal, who may make an instant impact at CB, will be in his fourth game (even if he does not start at corner right away, he will see the field at backup DB and possibly starting at gunner). He has a tremendous amount of potential, and should be up to the task of covering Iowa's #2/3 WR if Welch/Lane/Everett cannot (and I think they can).

Here's an early prediction on this game from Fiutak.

cfbnews.com

Saturday, September 24th - Iowa at Ohio State
If the Buckeyes beat Texas, they'll be flying high for the Big Ten opener with a 3-0 record and a likely top three ranking. Iowa will have played a nasty rivalry game at Iowa State, but it'll also have a nice tune up against Northern Iowa before traveling to Columbus. Linebacker fans are drooling over this game with a matchup of two of the nation's best corps with A.J. Hawk, Chad Greenway, Abdul Hodge, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel all on display. The two teams are even in several ways from the linebackers to the questionable running games to the solid receivers to the great coaching, and the close game will reflect that. Iowa pounded Ohio State 33-7 last year, and now Jim Tressel's boys will get their revenge. The Ohio State offensive line will do just enough against the still jelling Iowa D line to help squeak out the win.
Predicted score in late July: Ohio State 19 ... Iowa[font=verdana, arial,
sans serif] 13

I will be watching the Iowa St. vs Iowa game. I will be focusing on Iowas DL and their running game. If either looks suspect I will like our chances better. This game IMO will tell you alot about the Iowa squad. I'm glad we play them early before their ?'s have a chance to turn into !'s.

drew tate is a small guy, a good square hit from any of our backers and i dont know if he can take it
He's one heck of a tough guy. He kept playing and tried to complete a pass after having his helmet ripped off by the facemask by a scummer.

big deal. unless his head was still in the helmet, im not impressed. any D1 quarterback would've done the same thing. this is the hype that is drew tate, and this is why "I Fucking Hate Drew Fucking Tate".

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Each year, the sportswriters/casters try and pick a mid-level team to be its 'sleeper' so in the remote chance that they do run the table, they can say 'I told you so' all season long.

That # 2 ranking will last about four weeks before they start sinking like a stone & will be hopped by the normal perennial powers.

It's the Kirk Ferentz uber-bandwagon. He's the media darling (watch any ESPN halftime show for 30 seconds) now, so they'll pick them in the top 5 every year for the next 15, no matter what. Pay it no matter...they'll be good sometimes and not so good sometimes like everyone else.
