Rob Oller commentary: Diversion from Big Ten missing pizzazz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Over several cups of coffee at a diner nearly 20 years ago, two friends discussed our greatest fear, namely that we didn't want to be sitting in the same corner booth 20 years later discussing the same tired topics.
That sense of stagnation scared us to death. The thought of running in place while the world kept moving forward worried us more than where providence might put us in, say, 2007.
That long-ago fear is how I feel about today's football game in Ohio Stadium.
Something seems not quite right about stopping the Big Ten season in midstream and returning to a nonconference game against Kent State. It's like the Buckeyes have returned to that restaurant -- or worse, never left it -- instead of pushing forward toward some kind of completion or destiny.

When Buckeyes run

The big question is, how much will Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells play as he deals with a sensitive left ankle. It could turn into a coming-out party for freshman Brandon Saine. Kentucky, a passing team, ran for 266 yards against Kent State. ADVANTAGE: Ohio State

In the spotlight: Kent State QB Julian Edelman

Quarterback Julian Edelman uses his arm and legs to power the Kent State offense.

Ohio State's game against Kent State might look like a walkover in the making, but the OSU coaches won't rest easy until they've put the Flashes' lightning -- quarterback Julian Edelman -- in a bottle.
Not that Edelman cuts an imposing figure either physically (he's purportedly 6 feet tall) or statistically (he's 93rd in the country in pass efficiency). It's the way he goes about playing the game that makes him dangerous.
Many times the Flashes engage in a "scramble drill" to get Edelman away from the pressure, OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "And that scares you, because structure is what we like (in preparing a defense).

OSU notebook: Heacock won't let defense overlook Flashes

James Laurinaitis (33) and Kurt Coleman (4) are two keys to a stout OSU defense.

Even though Jim Heacock is proud that the Ohio State defense has received what amounts to a 4.0 grade-point average thus far this fall quarter, the defensive coordinator knows that is only an interim grade.
He didn't want to hear anything about No. 3 Ohio State's nonconference game with Kent State today being a breeze of a test. No matter how the defense has played in the first six games, "The next game is the most important," Heacock said.
One reason he won't relent is that the defense is close to statistically being the best overall unit in the country, which is always one of its goals. A slip or two against the Golden Flashes' balanced offense could send the Buckeyes sliding down some lists.

Flashes hit road to test mettle
Ohio State just latest tough trip for Kent

Julian Edelman and the Golden Flashes know what it's like to play the big boys of college football.

Kent State has been here before.

And not just to Ohio Stadium. The Golden Flashes, who lost here five years ago, have played at Pittsburgh, at Penn State, at Iowa, at Michigan State and at Virginia Tech since then, and at Iowa State and Kentucky this season. They know what it's like to take on teams from conferences with automatic bids to the Bowl Championship Series.
"Those programs have a lot of depth. And they are a little bigger," said Julian Edelman, the Flashes' 6-foot, 198-pound quarterback. "That's the only difference I can really see."
Kent State coach Doug Martin can't do anything about the size advantage Ohio State will have in today's game. But he plans to do what he can about the depth factor.

Golden Flashes get shot at the 'Shoe, but crowd might not be worst enemy
By JON SPENCER
For The Advocate

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State wide receiver Brian Hartline tried to look at today's home game with 30-point underdog Kent State from the other sideline. He didn't exactly see fear. "Teams like Kent, you give them a breath and they'll run with it," he said. "We have to make sure we come out swinging. I'm sure it's intimidating coming in the 'Shoe, but if it was me, it would be a thrill, so we'll see how they handle it."

The Flashes (3-3) expect to handle a crowd in excess of 100,000 better than they have the football. They went into Iowa State on the first Thursday of the season and stunned their Big 12 host 23-14. They were tied 14-14 at the half against No. 17 Kentucky before succumbing 56-20 in a turnover-marred performance.

OSU must stay focused vs. KSU
Tressel sees nonconference game as change of pace
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Saturday, Oct 13, 2007
The biggest challenge for Ohio State today as the Buckeyes face off against Kent State will be trying to remain focused.
With KSU coach Doug Martin already blowing off the importance of this game and saying he plans to rest his best players to prepare for the stretch run of the Mid-America Conference season, it would seem that he's all but conceded it to OSU.
Perhaps he recalls recent history, when the Buckeyes, on their way to a national championship, rolled KSU 51-17 in the schools' first meeting, or he just believes that the MAC is more important than pulling an Appalachian State-sized upset of the No. 3 Buckeyes.

OSU ready to host Kent St.
Saturday, October 13, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

There are upsets, and then there are upsets.

Columbus would mourn if Kent State's genie granted the Golden Flashes' wish at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State, the nation's third-ranked team by default and schedule design, takes a break from the Big Ten grind to take on a flyweight today. OSU is a 31-point favorite.

Stunning upsets have provided an intriguing storyline to the college football season. Michigan has been unseated, but remains very much alive to win the Big Ten. USC took a sucker punch from Stanford last week.

Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel said the only common theme in upsets is turnovers. Then he turned to former OSU Coach Earle Bruce and asked if he agreed.

"Yeah, I'd say that, and then coaching," Bruce said.

This is the first Saturday I have had off in 8 years when I could watch a noon game on the tv. I am so excited that I have hardly left my comupter.
Here is what it looks like at my desk right now.

I see you had the good sense to turn off the two monitors that had porn sites up.

According to the Big Ten Network map it is going to be on 219, but according to my DirecTv satellite receiver that channel is To Be Announced. The Big Ten coverage map shows that the state of Ohio will get the game but they list the channel as 219. It's kind of like a couple of weeks ago when the Penn St/Meatchicken game was overidden by the OSU/Northwestern game but not shown on the satellite system. My biggest problem is my son has a game at noon today and I need to know which channel to start recording so I can jump in and wacth later. This is stressful.

The BTN website says it will be on 219, but like you I also have that channel stating "TBA".
