Game Thread: Oklahoma 37, Baylor 30 (final, 2 OT)

Also keep OU's struggles this year in mind when anyone wants to try and bust our balls about going 8-4 the year after we set the record and have 14 players drafted by the NFL.

They didn't lose that many and obviously haven't been able to replace them for shit. The year after a great class leaves gives wonderful insight into the overall depth and health of a program. So far I'd say its safe to say St. Stoops isn't the overall program builder JT is.

Not to hijack - but how will Carroll's program stand up after his first major exodus of first day draft talent?

Herbie and that buffoon Desmond Howard debated this question on Gameday two weeks ago.

Howard said that USC would slip into "mediocrity" - Herbie challenged him on this and said b/c of Pete's recruiting ability, USC's location, and tradition - they might not continue the at same height of dominance, but the dynasty would continue.

So is our 8-4 performance in '04 "mediocre"?

I would think so by Buckeye standards...but it depends largely where your focus lies...the humiliting 3 game losing streak, or the dominating performances at the end of the season.

It would seem that St. Stoops is playing at or below "mediocre" level right now...but let's give him till the end of the season to see if he can make the same kind of mid-season adjustments JT did last year.

Well we can give him to the end of the season, but if they played in a different conference they would be getting smoked. They have lost to TCU(OVERRATED) and squeaked one out against Baylor at Home. They also got pasted by Texas, and that is a huge rivalry game.

I am still surprised at how much Bomar has struggled. Adrian being out has obviously made it even more difficult but Oklahoma still got 173 yards on 30 carries from Gutierrez. 4 sacks and 2 INTs against Baylor is rough. It also seems like Oklahoma taking so many top defensive recruits who were borderline academically has caught up with them.
Peterson was out (injury), Kejuan Jones was suspended, Donta Hickson was injured (ankle I think?) so Gutierrez, the 4th string RB was the starter and the 5th string got some playing time too.

Why is OU so bad this year?

-White graduated, the two best WR graduated and the only WR with significant playing time, Travis Wilson is hurt.
-The OL lost a lot experience from last year and the center Chester? was a TE last year.
-Cody the best def. player last year graduated and OU was lucky to get Dyroidcheck back (which i still can't believe the NCAA let it happen). Now the two best DE are hurt and out for the season so there is no depth there.
-The linebackers are good, prob. the only set pos.
-The secondary has always been easy to pass on. Last year at the game in Stillwater, Donovan just threw the ball up and let the WR run under it, and the DBs could do nothing about it, and you guys should know that last year Okla. St. was not a good passing team. We were ranked in the 100s in passing yds. for the NCAA.
