Game Thread Game Two: Ohio State 20, Akron 2 (Final)

Read between the lines. It's more frustration of having a steady diet of scarlet and gray always shoved down your throat.

Never say never, however, another good game like we had down there in '01 would make me happy.

I can't see that happening, wishful thinking that the offense looks worse than last week, but I can't see Boekman being worse than BeliSORRY..

It would seem to me that would only upset you if you considered yourselves on equal footing with tOSU.

For instance, I am a die hard Reds fan but have lived in a lot of different cities and always thought it was ok to root for the hometown minor league team even if it wasn't a Reds affiliate.

I don't see how Ohio schools fans wouldn't be a fan of both. OSU represents the state we all love, it's not the same league football wise so why can't you root for both?

Ohio schools at the Shoe under JT:

2001 Akron W 28-14
2002 Kent W 51-17
2003 BGSU W 24-17
2004 UC W 27-6
2005 Miami W 34-14
2006 UC W 37-7
2006 BGSU W 35-7
2007 YSU W 38-6

Win Loss record:8-0
Total Score: 274-88
Avg score: 34-11

Seeing the way they are acting so far I'm sure after the 21+ point loss we'll be hearing all about how the refs screwed them, if they just made this play or that, how overrated we are etc.

Typical little-mans complex so far.

You're missing Cincy from 2002 in there....I think....

I am a student at Akron right now and from reading the post on Zipnation.org I have lost respect to my fellow zips for their comments and I am a bigger Buckeye Fan then Zips fan but I cheer for both of them but I want to see Ohio State win.

And then you wonder why they write on zipsnation what they write.

I root for Ohio State when they don't play MAC teams, and I love Ohio, but Ohio State does not represent me.

Using that logic, does Ohio University represent you? Uh huh...thought so.

First, zip81, welcome to BP! Second, it appears to be a matter of perspective. The way I see it, the Ohio State Marching Band waves the state flag of Ohio in the stands at the Horseshoe. When the team goes on the road and travels to other states, so goes that flag. When we played Texas the past two years, a lot of the discussion on message boards and in the media alike were focused on how UT and OSU represented their states in terms of football talent and fan-following. My perspective is influenced by the fact that I have been an Ohio State fan since childhood, along with being an OSU alum. If you don't see it as such, thats cool. However, OSU fans will always wish Ohio teams to do well. What I am wondering is, why is there such a large discrepancy in the behavior towards OSU between friends I know of that go to the other Ohio schools, and those I see on the message boards?

Ok then if they consider themselves on equal footing with OSU in football I can see why they hate us. When expectations and reality do not coincide, frustration results.

If OU was the largest state school and a perrinial CFB power while OSU was a small school with a lousy record in football then I would assume most Ohioans would say OU represented them.

Since thats clearly not the case I'm not sure exactly why it would even be brought up.

What's really amazing is the venom they reserve for their own board members professing to root for Ohio State and Akron. I saw the same thing last year on the BGSU board. While I've never understood rooting for Ohio State over one's own school, it's perfectly understandable to root for both in most cases. Ohio State occupies a role and a place in Ohio culture that other schools don't and never will. I think the fury with which they turn on their own for showing any allegiance to Ohio State is because they don't like being reminded that they aren't Ohio State's equals--athletically, academically or in the mindset of the broader population.

After all, you never see Cal students rooting for UCLA or Michigan students who root for Michigan State (or the reverse in either case). How many gamewatches do you think A&M students will be having for this week's Texas game? It doesn't happen because those schools are roughly peers. Whereas, I'm sure that there are large numbers of students at Fresno State, Chico State and Fullerton State rooting for Cal, large numbers of directional Michigan school students who maintain a rooting allegiance to UM or MSU while large number of students at North Texas State and Houston will be rooting for Texas this weekend. That's because in all those cases, one university is the state's flagship--athletically, academically and culturally. The others are regional state colleges serving a more limited role. For that same reason there will be thousands of students at Ohio's regional state colleges rooting for the Buckeyes this weekend.

If OU were the state's flagship university, its only AAU member, its only USN&WR tier 1 ranked college and its dominant producer of everything from football national championships to Olympic gold medalists to Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, they would represent the state. They aren't, so they don't. We are, so we do.
