Game Thread Game Two: Ohio State 20, Akron 2 (Final)

Hmmm, I don't exactly follow the "OSU represents the entire state" philosophy. It's a Div IA college in Ohio, just like Akron, Kent State, Toledo, Ohio, Miami, Cincy, BGSU,... (is that all of them?). Anyways, just because Ohio State is traditionally the football powerhouse of the state (and carries the state name), it DOES NOT mean students at another Ohio school should owe the Buckeyes any allegiance.

Similarily, to treat the other Div IA schools like they're "minor league" teams is the EXACT reason why they hate us! It's an awfully arrogant way to look at these teams, don't you think? So JT is 8-0 at home against these schools... big deal? How would we like the SEC to say the Buckeyes are a minor league team because we can't muster a bowl win against their conference? I think we'd say they were arrogant a-holes. As a matter of a fact, our message boards might look a lot like the Akron board.

To think that the Zips are intending to "hope to keep things respectable" is just plain stupid. They are coming to the Shoe for one reason - to beat the Buckeyes. We shouldn't anticipate anything else from them, and we should aniticpate Akron students to be 100% behind their team. Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if students at Kent, BGSU, Ohio, Cincy, Toledo, and Miami to be pulling for Akron to pull off the upset and knock us down a peg. After all, an Akron win could get them all called up to the major leagues in our eyes.

Sometimes I read our arrogant comments to opposing fans and understand why some hate us. They have nothing to lose and deserve to be shown some respect, no matter how good they are or aren't.

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

I agree. Using the logic you're stating, let's take it one step further: rather than just "representing the state," why not find the one team that "represents the nation." We should all get behind USC.

I make up words, too.

Absolutely. The coaches have to believe that they can beat Ohio State. Otherwise, why would the players follow them? And the players have to believe that they can beat Ohio State. Otherwise, the coaches would kick their butts back to the locker room. A team shouldn't even show up to play if they don't believe that they can win. Sure - they may believe that they have the deck stacked against them, but, as Kenny Loggins says, "Every hand's a winner.."

And Akron has an ace up their sleeve: they've been looking forward to this game all summer long. They're looking to "shock the sports world" the same way that App State did.

It would be nice to be able to "work on" specific aspects of the Buckeyes' game. But not at the expense of over-looking the opponent and getting the loss. That said, I have faith in Tressel, the rest of the coaching staff, and the leaders on the team to keep their minds on THIS game, and come away with a fairly easy win.

Ohio State 33 - Akron 13.

Bowling Green just beat a Big 10 team, and Kent State just beat a Big 12 team on the road. I'm sure Akron is chomping at the bit to do the same.

I'm rooting for us to win big, but I'd love to see Dennis Kennedy have a great game for the Zips.

JMO but I think Jt used last week to play a lot of players just to get a better idea of who could do what. There were a few things that I wouldn't be happy with except for the fact that we were playing so many. So this week I look for fewer players and more attention paid to execution and fundamentals as he more or less boils down the team.
We will see more of the starters in this game as they need the practice of playing together to solidify Offense and Defense.

Correction, they're also coming for a very handsome payday.

I suppose that is one reason the game is on the schedule, but I have a feeling that the Akron players don't giving a flying ___ about the money. At least they shouldn't.

Some predictions for this week's game:
1. Wells looks better, but still not as good as we want him to. I'd say 18 rushes for 80 yards.
2. Boeckman does a better job of spreading the ball around (especially to tight ends), but he doesn't look as sharp.
3. Our pass coverage is a point of frustration, but we're stronger against the run.
4. We finally get a turnover... (how many quarters has it been???)
5. Buckeyes 33, Zips 10.

Yes, but nobody here is arguing that students or fans of other Ohio schools must be fans of OSU. The argument here is simply that there's nothing wrong with students and fans of other Ohio schools also being fans of OSU. That's in contrast to what some on the Zipsnation board would argue.

As far as there being multiple D-1A football schools in Ohio, that is certainly true, but the fact still remains that if you want to follow a D1-A football school from Ohio that is competitive at a national level, there's only one option to choose from. I personally don't think it's an insult to the other Ohio schools, nor a mark of arrogance, to acknowledge the fact that their football programs, and OSU's, are not on the same level. That doesn't mean that they're not good, and it doesn't mean that they could never have any hope of the possibility of winning a game against OSU, but there clearly is a difference in the caliber of the programs.

This is a poor analogy. Your analogy would apply to all Akron fans becoming Toledo fans, if Toledo won the MAC several years in a row. That sort of fair-weather fanship is very different from Akron fans being also OSU fans. Because there is a difference between OSU football and Akron football: OSU competes at a national level, whereas Akron competes only at a regional level. This is a difference that doesn't exist between OSU football and USC football, any more than it exists between Akron football and Toledo football. If you want to construct a hypothetical situation in which your USC-as-national-team analogy would apply, it would be that universities from every country across the globe play American football, and Ohio State isn't really capable of competing with the best international teams, but USC is. In such a scenario, a lot of OSU fans would be USC fans when it came to international competition, because USC would be the team that most effectively represented the nation.

Uh...not to nitpick, but Kenny Loggins sang "Danger Zone" and "Footloose". Kenny RODGERS sang "The Gambler" the song to which you are referring.

Hmm..
Someone edited my post.
I wasn't feeling well.
My toe hurts.
My wife was bitching at me about something.
I was busy watching football.

Have I come up with enough excuses for that mistake, yet?

I missed Simpsons last night and I was a little annoyed with that.
I lost the remote to the TV and I was tired from getting up to change the channel.
The huge Michigan I left in the toilet clogged the toilet.

Choose whichever excuse you want to.
