Game Thread Game Two: Ohio State 20, Akron 2 (Final)

Some thoughts on today:

1. Not to say I told you so, but back to my original thoughts on this game... The Buckeyes were not in a "different league" than Akron. That was a tough game. I don't care what the total yard stats say, the freaking score was 3-2 at halftime. If that's not a game, then what is???
2. Our defense manhandled that team. We treated them like ragdolls in the second half, and it's about time!!!
3. The offense gave up five turnovers and 100% of Akron's points??? That need to be fixed within the next 6 days. Period.
4. JamO had his greatest Buckeye play EVER!!! Fantastic. Energetic. Aggressive!!! Finally!!!!!!
5. Buckeyes are a perfect 2 and 0. Can't complain. On that subject - Michigan will be perfect after today too. They are losing 32-7 in the first half!!! 0-2 is a perfect record... kind of! HA!!!! Fucking Wolverines suck balls. I love it.

:oh:

Ohio State O played great for a quarter this game. Otherwise it was pretty horrific to watch. Beanie looked good.

The defense.. Wow. They look really good. The DLine got better from week 1 to week 2, as the season goes on they will only get better. They are going to be fun to watch this season.

Offense needs to improve big time. Offensive line looked slow much of the day.....especially Rehring who looked terrible in my opinion. Turnovers made this one closer than it was. The D looked great and will help us a lot in the game next week. The only thing that is making me happy about today's game is whatching UM play right now. All that said we will need to improve on offense big time when we go to Washington.

i respectfully disagree this was not a game... while I give credit to Akron for gettin the saftey they came no where close to beating us. Sure it was 3-2 at the half but why was the game so close? Because we let it be close. 5 turnover, 1 saftey, several subsitution errors (changing QB's), lack of diversity in play calling, and finally a conservative approach LET this be a game for a little bit. Overall though I was not worried one bit even when we were down 2-0 goin into the 2nd

From what Ive gathered.. since i was only able to listen to the game.. I hope ,people get off Beanie this week.. cause it's evident that when the Oline blocks properly and doesnt have people busting through the line, then Beanie is an All American RB...

I got tired of hearing people say he ran hesitant last week and fell down too easily.. Bottomline is that when you get him to the LOS and he doesnt have 4 people at his feet, he's able to bust off punishing runs like we saw today..

I also didnt like Schoenhoft getting so many snaps in a 13-2 game.. Todd needs reps...

Finally,I can wait to get the torrent of this game, so that I can watch the D..

Welcome to OSU Cam Heyward, Ross Homan, and Thad Gibson.. Those three boys broke onto the scene today from what I heard..

That's exactly why we are in a different league. We won 20-2 despite turning it over 5 times and substituting practically every player on the roster.

Was I worried? No.
Did I think the Bucks looked like they were in a different league? No way.

1. The offensive line lost the battle in the trenches. I don't care how many yards Beanie had. When the Bucks tried power running plays, they failed. It took more creative running plays to bust things open.
2. Sure, the Bucks gave up 5 turnovers. But, you can't say that was all the Bucks doing. Akron played tough and EARNED some of those turnovers.
3. If this represents how the Bucks will perform against a team who isn't dreaming of conference or national championships, then we will not be in a BCS game this year. I'm not saying there's no hope. I'm just saying that there's a LOT to work on before we start worrying about rankings or bowl games.
4. Washington has to be feeling pretty good right about now. Ohio State looked so-so against a Div IAA team and a MAC team. Washington smoked a Big East team on the road, and is about to end the longest current Div IA winning streak. Then add the Pac 10 success against the Big 10 today - Oregon KILLING the Big 10 favorite at the Pighouse??? Washington has to be feeling good. We have a lot to fix in 6 days. Trust me.

YEAH!!! And I'd add Rolle to that list. He had the two best special teams tackles I've seen a long time within 30 seconds. He's fast, strong, and explosive.

I take it you didn't catch the YSU game because there were a lot of great tackles on special teams too including one by Clifford. :wink2:

I still enjoyed myself at the game today (I surprised my dad with north endzone section A tickets for his b-day) but it is a bit discouraging. I realize a team will make mistakes and even look bad against a lower-tier team.

However, the mistakes we were making were from our youth and that is tough to change. Our freshman class looks very, very impressive but they have so much to learn and quick. Cam Heyward really stuck out on D and Brian Rolle looks amazing on special teams. James Scott plays well on special teams. All of Torrence, Sanzenbacher, and Washington look great and Saine is going to be a stud. Some other young guys look good as well.

I am extremely concerned with our turnover margin, youth, and blocking. Our OL has it's moments but they can look really bad as well. I am really hoping it is just simply missing assignments and not talent on our OL because Beanie needs holes to run through. Saine and Beanie can carry the load as a nice combo and MoWells provides a nice 3rd down option. We just have to block. The turnovers are young guys being young guys for the most part.

My prediction for this year? I personally expect 3 losses minimum. I am in no way trying to be negative but it really just seems that way. Our team looks extremely talented but I think our year will be in '08, not this year. I just watch teams like USC, LSU, etc. and we just aren't on their level...yet. I hope I'm proven wrong and we win every game but I just don't see it happening. I think to expect anymore than at least one loss is goinh to set yourself up for a letdown. However, I am glad we won and Go Bucks!

HA! Oh, I caught the game all right! I caught it from Sec 25C, row 14, seat 23.

But, you are correct. Clifford was a beast last week. However, I'd still give the nod to Rolle today. Two great tackles on back-to-back kick offs.

point of order: in 2002 we hung half a hundred on the MAC teams.

agreed. I guess some of the fans don't even remember basic facts about the greatest season in recent history.

It's your assumption I was speaking of 2002. I could have been talking about 2005 just as easily.
Point is, both those years there were a lot of question marks at the beginning. A lot of sloppy or uninspired play on offense, struggling against some pretty mediocre teams, etc. But our defense held, and the offense figured things out by the end of the season.
The score in this game was 20-2. The 1st half and turnovers left a lot to be desired, but it's also obvious there is plenty of talent and potential.

I don't understand why everyone is on this team's back. They had a terrible outing on offense, but I didn't see any miscues that can't be coached away. The receivers ran the routes wrong. Todd Boeckman tried to throw farther than he actually could. These are things that we shouldn't see again, or much more.

That said, the offensive line after halftime started doing a lot better. They still can't get a straight push, and I really did not like Rehring's play, but they were opening holes big enough for Beanie to get through and start trucking everything in Akron. Beanie ran like a man possessed, and I am very, very pleased to see that. He was angry. This wasn't like Beanie against Northwestern or Michigan, where he was just concentrating. This was Beanie who wanted to punish people. Chris Wells after getting stuffed AGAIN decided he had enough. Hopefully he holds onto that emotion and stays in the right mindset.

The defense, though. Who cares if the offense only scores 20 a game? When you shut down any team to the extreme order Akron was shut down - THREE first downs, 71 yards, and only three yards on the ground to the MAC's best running back...well, you don't need an all-star offense. We don't have the offense we have the past few years. We also don't have the defense. It's better. I think it's better than the 2005 defense, or has the potential to be. Both corners were completely lockdown. I saw only a couple passes thrown at Malcolm, and both were knocked down easily. Washington was having a great game only giving up what he wanted to. The linebackers were good in pass coverage, and absolutely amazing in sniffing out options and screens and the like. And the run defense, nothing needs to be said. So much pressure on the QB, and absolutely nowhere for any Akron player to run.

Washington will be a real test for this offense, with Locker out there. But I'm not as worried about him as I was before. And honestly, I think as long as the offense can put up 20 points a game, we should be able to beat any team, with this defense.
