Game Thread Game Two: Ohio State 20, Akron 2 (Final)

Washington is the worst tackler on the roster. His performance on ballcarriers today was humiliating. Against a team like Wisconsin that likes to grind it out, I say put Clifford in there, that's an improvement in that respect. On another note, anyone think Jemario O'Neal earned any PT with his solid play late today?

Was at the game with a buddy and pointed out that it almost appeared that Washington wasn't going for the tackle, but looked more concerned about standing the ball-carriers up so the team could clean it up and maybe strip the ball/force a fumble.

It looked to me that he and MJ split about equal reps covering Jabari Arthur, and Arthur was limited to 4 catches for 32 yards, with a long of 16. I'll take that any day.

As for Akron's punter, he was a monster! My player of the game too. Stec's line:

14 punts, 575 yards(!!!), 41.1 avg, long 52, 3 inside the 20.

Not to wear the proverbial rose-covered glasses, but this team is a work in progress, and that's the way it's supposed to be. This is a young team, despite all that we expect of them, based on media and recruiting hype. The reality is, mistakes will be made. The question to be answered is, how will this young team learn from their mistakes and improve, or will they stagnate. While the upcoming game against Washington is huge to us, as fans, in a national setting, it means nothing in terms of the Big 10 race. The key is improvement on a week to week basis. Hopefully, that will reflect itself in wins.

I don't understand why everyone is on this team's back. They had a terrible outing on offense, but I didn't see any miscues that can't be coached away ...And honestly, I think as long as the offense can put up 20 points a game, we should be able to beat any team, with this defense.

Well, when we won our last NC, the doomsdayers on this board were apoplectic; people love teams that score lots of points. Tressel on the other hand likes to play the margins.

I don't think that very many of us expected Ohio State to win a NC this year, for so many good reasons. And it would take a lot of luck to go undefeated, or at least error-free ball, and both of those looked far away today at times.

So, will they lose next week? If they can't get their act together on the O line and turn the ball over like that probably so. Nevertheless, I will be very surprised if they lose.

I still believe that a class was in session in both of these first games. Next week, we will see what this team really has for the first time.

I thought Washington played pretty good overall...you could pin a missed tackle or two on almost anyone today.

O'Neal made one strip...one play does not earn, or regain, a starting position. There's a reason why he's no longer starting...

Defense to to Rescue

Holding the Zips to 3 yards rushing and 66 yards passing in 17 attempts, the Defense was the shinning star. From the Toledo Blade:

toledoblade.com -- Buckeyes defense to the rescue

Coach Tressel:

"Our defense dictated the tempo of the entire football game," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said after watching the Buckeyes force Akron to punt the first 13 times the Zips had the ball. The final Akron possession ended when the Ohio State defense forced a fumble and then recovered it.

Dane Sanzenbacher had this to say after the game.

"Those guys on defense - they kept us in the game," said Ohio State freshman receiver Dane Sanzenbacher from Central Catholic High School. "After playing both ways in high school, I know how hard it is to repeatedly stop a team like that, so I can really appreciate the job they did out there. That was really a dominating performance."

Akron's coach had high praise for tOSU D:

"This is one of the best defenses we will ever see," Brookhart said of OSU, which had three sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

"I knew it was going to be a struggle, I just didn't think it was going to be this much of a struggle. Ohio State's front seven is the best I have ever seen."

I think the offense will come together soon, we can thank our lucky stars that the defense's train is on the track and steaming forward.

Sanzenbacher knows there are high expectation on offense:

toledoblade.com -- Barton, Boeckman critical of mistake-filled offense

Ohio State freshman receiver Dane Sanzenbacher, who had one reception for nine yards in the game, said he understands the high expectations here, where even in victory the discussion focuses on what did not go right, and he expects the offense to progress.

"That all comes with the territory, especially with the explosive offense we had here last year, people are going to expect us to move the ball and put up a lot of points," Sanzenbacher said. "The offense has been working hard, and I am sure we will keep getting better."

Knowing the potential for this Freshman, he will continue to get better. 20 points is respectable but with the talent that tOSU has, it should have been double that. A win is a win, but when will the entire train arrive at the station?

Lots of things stick out to me.

Great defense, clearly.

Some on the board call this "vanilla offense" and call it a practice/scrimmage at the same time. Well, if this is a practice then you have to assume these are the plays they are practicing to improve execution, no? So this is what we should expect? That didn't happen last year. My point is, TresselBall is back...for better or worse.

Next week is a great barometer for the season. Washington is beating #22 BSU right now. They look pretty good. This defense and this offense probably means a close game. This talent and Washington's talent should mean not a close game. We'll see.

Didn't have time to read this whole thread so can someone tell me who had the fumbles for us? I didn't pick up the game via radio til the 4th Qtr. Besides the Hartline fumble, who else coughed it up? Just curious who and how they occurred. Gotta be concerned with Turnovers. With an offense that doesn't put up a ton of points, we HAVE to take care of the ball. Anyway, thanks in advance.

The 3-3 is a bitch...I figured tOSU would have a tough time early on. Add in some turnovers and inexperience, you get an ugly ballgame.

The good news is the Bucks are 2-0 and know there are improvements to be made.

Some thoughts from the stands - or numbers by the by.

A Perfect Opportunity Missed? - Remember the film M*A*S*H? Hotlips side line cheer? Yep - 69 is Mighty Fine! 69 in Mighty Fine!
Could have happily heard that cheer from the stands yesterday at the end of the game. A Perfect opportunity, missed.

Huge props to the Defense. Yes, it is a MAC team, Yes it is not UW (upcoming) but keeping any but the very worst of D1A teams well below 100 throughout the whole game is a massive accomplishment, massive.
We shall see just how far above worst Akron truly is on Offense as the season progresses, but I think they will not be that low. We already know they are one game better than a service academy. That should by all rights place them above ND :)
Of course, part of that win by Akron over Army was a defensive score - INT returned for TD.

Noteworthy - despite 5 turnovers, two through the air from Boeckmann's hands, Akron garnered no added points to complement the early 2 point gift from a curiously stumble prone Chris Wells. (Later he found his footing, but early on there seemed to be too much lean for contact, not enough balanced running).
Two more turnovers than Akron had first downs? Again a stunning contrast.

Special teams worry me a little though, Akron's punter was booming that ball all day. The coffin corner kick early in the game was an absolute picture perfect punt - it of course set up the aforementioned safety. The punter in my view robbed Ohio State of expected field position all day.
So, why the ST concern, because it seemed to take a little time for the fair catcher to realize that Stec would Stick that punt damned near every time, and that the roll after first bounce would consistently go in favor of the visitors.

About the Turnovers

INT numero uno - Dane slips, TB passes anyway. Who is at fault on this? Anyone, fate? INT number two, seemed from my vantage point he threw with too much air under the abll and insufficiently far. (Or to restate a secure throw rule - throw it where only your guy and no-one else can throw it). Not sure, but it seemed that TB throughout his day might have benefited from taking all the time available to go away from a primary to a check-down receiver. I'm not saying explicitly that TB was telegraphing, but I do think he was often glued to a primary quadrant of the field.

Whether my supposition is right or not, I think the INTs are something that can be overcome. (Even if it means throwing the ball away on a play).

The fumbles are in my view the most correctable of the errors committed yesterday. I will say no more on those.

What does still have me worried as the Buckeyes gear up to go to Seattle is the distinct lack of rushing production EARLY in the game. Yes, the Buckeyes ended the game with pretty solid numbers on the ground. 196 yards - 4.8 yards per carry. Lick yer chops stuff, right?

Wrong.

The bulk of those rushing yards came in the final two frames. Against a squad that brought far fewer players to the field. When their waterboys were already packing up the buses for the trip back via 71 and Rt 30 to Akron.

Getting a good start to the running game against UW will be absolutely a critical determinant of success in Seattle. Some of that is the O-Line, but a lot of it was a certain tentativeness as our RBs approached the line. Got to have good crisp running next week. Else we might end up sleepless next Saturday night.

Still, it's a win, the squad is 2-0 (and that is so much better than TSUN's position, it ain't even funny).

Exactly correct. On the OSU/Miami side, you cite one cartoon character's opinion.

im citing the same cartoon characters who believed scum was worthy of a pre season #5 ranking. the same who are calling this the greatest upset in the history of god. now that scum has been thoroughly embarrassed by the ducks. do you still think the appy state win was on the same level as you originally believed? or was it a very good 1aa team getting lucky in a game against a crappy 1a team?

the miami vrs tOSU comparison was a situation that had "some" areas in which they were similar and could be compaired. not that they were 100% identical. for example. both were situations in which the general perception was that a certain outcome was all but guaranteed. yet, had the general populous spent enough time doing research the actual result wouldn't have been all that surprising.

Couldn't have put it any better, excellent bit right there.

After gaining 34 yards on their opening drive, Akron lost seven yards over their next nine drives. Let me say that again...Akron's total offense over their second through tenth possessions was a negative seven yards. Oh yeah, 13 straight 3-and-outs.

Yeah, it was Akron, but that was still impressive. If we play anywhere near that well statistically at Washington, we're in good shape.
