I thought the sack was okay. What bugged me was that on 2nd down on the last 4 downs of that drive, Pittman didn't block Robison- Robison batted the ball down, Pittman caught it, and lost like 5 yards on the play before the sack on 3rd and long. Not only did we lose the yards, we went from the center to the left hashmark, which made the kick just that much harder.

If Pittman blocks that guy, we could have a 1st down catch over Robison. Instead, we lose 5 yards and get a tough angle on a long kick.

I think that is the only time I would ? the play calling. When we were up by 6 and needed a fg. We were on the 29. That makes for a 46 yd. fg. If Smith was in the game you run the qb run twice to try and get another 5 yds and make it a 40 yarder. a fg clinches the game. Since Zwick was in you hand it to Schnit and let him pick up a couple of yards while centering the ball in the middle.

Instead here is what we did. First we try and run a little dump to hamby, which was deflected by the big lineman. Lucky it wasnt picked by him and even if pitt makes the block there were two guys on Hamby that make the pick and probably take it back for 6.

Then the next play Holmes runs a great route and Zwick throws a high ball and it goes incomplete.

Huu misses by a foot game over end of story.

For those that don't understand the reason behind having Smith in the game I think it is that when Tress would like to run designed qb runs and can't b/c the right qb isnt in the game.

They were vulnerable deep all night. And we didn't use it. Its enough to make me sick. really.

Generally it takes me a week to recover from a loss (which have been covered ad nauseam). There are good and bad things to take from this game as a whole. I personally would like to thank every single payer on our team. They played with heart and class, and fought to the very end. Everyone from the scout team to AJ Hawk had a part in this (the effort, not the loss). tOSU came up 3 short (fuck) but what can you do in retrospect, nothing. So lets get up for SDSU and pound em. Last week is over, second guessing and excuses are for pussies.

edit; I dig the feature of putting links in the quoted posts, and I am by no means refering to Scoot as a pussy. I was agreeing that losses make me ill.

It still hurts that we lost, but I think we played one heck of a game. I think Zwick did well despite the pressure of it possibly being his last shot. I don't think JT held the punishment over his head, however the punishment meant we had to prepare for Miami with Zwick getting more reps. And Tressel has always valued practice reps for choosing a starter (ie last year Zwick was horrible early on but kept the job)... and I think Smith lost the starting job due to lack of reps. Now that he has a chance to prepare properly, he is our starter.

Did Texas get lucky (Youboty drop, bar bounce FG, near safety, OSU missed FG, etc)? Sure. But they didn't win b/c they were lucky. They won b/c they played incredibly hard and kept themselves in teh game. Other than the hamby drop, I think it was Chizik and not Bollman that limited us to FGs. VY leading his team to a winning throw after taking that many huge hits was truly admirable.

We got much luckier during some of our 02 wins. But we kept ourselves in it, and we take credit for winning those close games so Texas should have the same privilege.

I think we have a decent shot to stay in this. ND beat two overrated teams, but don't put it past Weis to find a way to beat ND, plus ASU will be an incredible test. With a better defense last year, they nearly lost to many average teams.

I agree with cbf40. I was sure that we were going to call a short pass over the middle to set up the missed field goal (we didn't need a first down).
This is one the many reasons that I have gravitated towards the bucks [over UM], they just seem to care more and understand what football should be.
You get smarter the longer you stay here :)
On missing a 50-yard field goal with 5:00 left -- “Fifty isn’t a long field goal. It isn’t anything you need to worry about or change your form or kick harder. I just didn’t get through on it and left it out to the right.”
I love this quote, and I think he's telling the truth. Nobody can be nugent, but we've a great replacement.

We absolutely got lucky on a couple of plays, I would argue that we got unlucky on a couple as well not the least of which is a dropped int. by Drew Kelson on your third drive. We were up 10-0 at that point and instead of getting the ball in great field position the bucks went down and scored. Breaks go both ways, I am just glad that they went mine when it really counted.

I agree, it was a hard fought game and should not be seen as a negative for either team.

I think that is the only time I would ? the play calling.
Th only other play calling question would be leaving 38 seconds on the clock before halftime. Why did we not runt he clock down to 5 seconds call a time-out and then kick a field goal before half-time. Instead of allowing time for Texas to go down the field and nullify the 3 points we just put on the field???

We absolutely got lucky on a couple of plays

We also got screwed by the refs a number of times.

The Melton TD & the Pittman fumble a few plays before the Hamby drop were a ten point swing.

Gonzales' knee touching a yard short on the third and 21 was a bad call as well that may have given us more time to score a TD at the end of the half. Whitner should have been called with a face masking penalty when he ripped Vince's helmet off on the first series, and maybe we get a TD if that call gets made.

There are a lot of plays that could have affected the outcome both ways. These are just a few examples. In the end, that's football.

This is perfect. Per O-Zone:

Bobby Carpenter may have put it best this evening after practice when he described how he felt following the game. "It's been tough, the past couple days. It's sort of like someone taking your dog out in front of you and shooting him." Carpenter exclaimed. "You've got to go pick him up and bury him."

I don't know why you are complaining about the refs. The penalties went you way and they did a hell of a job on the replays. For the calls you are talking about:

Melton was not in, he was outside the pylon.

Gonzo put his hand down to get the extra yard, it was a good spot.

Pitt was down. They didnt even replay, there was no question.

The only call in the whole game I didnt like was the late hit against Hoobler b4 halftime. The guy came from behind and hit Hoobler into someone else who fell clear out of bounds, so Hoobler gave him a little shove to the chest, He hardly even knocked him back and it was with 1 or 2 sec. of the whistle. If anything it should of been offsetting like the one later in the game.

I don't know if you did the breakdown and I am probably nit pickin' but Zwick did throw an incomplete pass to Holmes down the right side of the field. I Know it had to be over 20. Also Gonzo one catch was for 21 yds. b/c it was 3rd and 21. One thing that boggles my mind is why the qb's always throw the 0-5 yd. pass. Other things are open.
