Game Thread Game Two: Texas 25, Ohio State 22 (final)

Per the Jeff Amey game breakdown which is posted weekly on O-Zone,
http://the-ozone.net/football/2005/SanDiegoState/bythenumberstexas.htm

As I saw it, we were able to run pretty effectively against Texas when we ran fairly "standard" running plays (i.e. exclude the QB draws and WR reverse)

With the 3 main running play types: Counter/trap, Base/ISO, and Draw, we ran a total of 13 plays for 67 yards. That's a shade over 5 yards per play, and that's good enough to warrant more attempts, especially when in their territory.

I was surprised to see we ran 77% of our plays from the shotgun.
We have 8 red zone possessions so far, and only 2 TDs as a result. I hope JT shows a litlle more confidence in his O-Line's ability to move people and has TS up under center more from here on out.

I think those stats are a little off. I know Pittman had 17 for 75.

Also I want to try and clear something up. The run play to Troy Smith is not just a qb draw. It is a designed rb, where he has the rb lead the hole.

Think of it this way. They have 7 guys in the box and we have 6. We hand off to the rb and they have an extra guy not accounted for b/c we don't have anyone blocking him.

If we hike it to Smith and he goes with it you now have a 7th guy blocking using your rb. Hence the reason Tress runs it so much. You have better odds of picking up everybody.

that's all well and good... the problem is that according to Tressel in the Luncher, they called Troy's draw "3 or 4 times." according to the box score, Troy had 13 rushes... he clearly was taking off when the play call was a pass... Tressel smoothed it over by saying that "some of those were called at the line," but i'm not buying it...

i hope Troy gets over his happy feet, and decides to actually look the field over before he takes off running, or all that talent we have on the outside is going to be wasted...

In Troys article with Biddle on bn he says they were all designed runs.

Plus, 47 of 61 plays had 3 or more WR's lined up (77%)
Only 7 of those 47 plays ended with the ball in a WR's hands (15%)

If you're going to the spread because of the talent we have at WR, then don't get them the ball (yes, i know that they dropped a few too) then your QB is not running the offense effectively. I initially thought while eatching the game live that it was the coaching staff becoming too conservative - but the more I hear and see, it sounds like the QB not executing the play.
I think Zwick has done a very good job so far this year of spreading the ball around. I think there was a whole lot of rust showing on smith when he was in. No excuses against SDSU. Our Wrs, TE, and RB had better have good production. If not, then look for more hand-wringing decisions to be made about the QB position.

Nope, he said all 11 were called from Tressel. Exact quote.
I heard rumblings of another scenario...but if that is the direct quote, I guess it is the truth.

They may not have been called from the sideline but I doubt that they were pure improv. I find it hard to believe that JT would have named smith the starter if he was "shooting from the hip" very often.
True....but it was part of the rumblings sent my way to explain why JZ got the nod on the final drive.

I still also think Tressel wants to keep it balanced and run and pass about the same even know we are running a spread look. He said yesterday he has been watching tape of Alex Smith when he was at Utah, and that is waht they did.

Yeah I had heard that too, but that is just what Smith told Biddle.
