Gamefly: Unlimited PC Downloads

Gamefly is planning to add unlimited PC digital downloads to their already popular mail in console rental plan. I was pretty skeptical at first, but it sounds like they will have the entire Direct2Drive catalog which includes a ton of games and all major releases (except Valve game which are only on Steam and of course games like SWTOR which will be exclusive to Origin). They are also keeping their pricing the same, $16 per month. Here is a recent interview...

Honestly, this sounds too good to be true. With digital download there is literally no waiting (well, the time to download but much faster than the mail). No sending the one you have back for another one. No que hoping you get the game you want. For $16 a month you can get every major game right at launch for the PC, and even still get the ability to rent console games.

How are these digital downloads "returned" once your done playing or cancel your subscription. If you download them and have them installed locally, how can Gamefly monitor that?

My guess is there will be a special folder for Gamefly games on your hard drive. The Gamefly program will have access to that folder and will be able to tell what is installed there (similar to Steam). It will probably only allow 1 game installed at a time. If you want to play another game, my guess is it will uninstall whatever is on your hard drive at the time and replace it with the new game. That way you can only have 1 installed at a time. If you try and move the game in order to hide it from Gamefly, it will lock itself out like DRM would (perhaps by making random validation checks, I am not sure). Either that, or you will need to be logged into Gamefly when you launch the game to verify it. It wouldn't need always on internet, but could be 1 time verification at the launch of a game.

As with anything I am sure you could crack the games and keep them, but that is no different than doing the same thing from a torrent or direct download site.

All of that is speculation on my part, yet there are many ways they could do it.
