Gearing up for the holiday season, BUCKEYE PLANET Style

BuckeyeRyn

Calling all friends & people I met on the way down
As the holiday season approaches I felt as a community we could come together and do something special for those serving overseas who will be unable to spend this season in the comfort of their own homes, with their family, friends and loved ones.

With Clarity's approval and encouragement I would like for us, as a community, to "adopt" one Marine Company inparticular. This Company is stationed basically in the trenches of all the muck in Iraq. They are truly on the front line, in the heart of it all. They shipped out the beginning of September and aren't scheduled to arrive home until late spring (provided their tour isn't extended.)

While I won't bore you with all the details of the conditions over there I will provide a few basics:
  • they are only able to shower once every 2-3 weeks. All other times they are to clean up using bottled water.
  • Unless an item is sent from home they only have MRE's to eat.
  • they have no running water, they digs holes to use as toilets and then set them ablaze.
This company is comprised of all men. Some of the men never receive a package nor even a letter of encouragement from home. This holiday season I would like to change that. These men are from all over the United States, they deployed from Camp LeJeune. While some of you might not agree with the war being fought in Iraq I ask you to put aside your personal beliefs on the actual war and look at this from a humanitarian point of view. These men are simply doing their job. Following orders.

I have been sending at least one package a week to a particular soldier in this Company. I would like to send as many packages as financially possible over the next 3 weeks (it takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks for them to receive the packages.) USPS offers free boxes and tape. The cost to ship each box is $8.65, regardless of weight. I typically spend anywhere between 25-50 dollars putting stuff in the boxes. That is usually on the simple requested items (eye drops, baby wipes, chapstick, snacks, lotion, sunscreen, bug repellant, socks, undershirts, etc.) I know all the men share all the items they receive as they are truly a "band of brothers." I would like to make sure their basic needs are met as well as some "above and beyond" FUN stuff for the holidays. I would also like to include letters of support.

If you would like to participate in this "PAY IT FORWARD" adventure please get in touch with me via PM or e-mail ([email protected]) I need to get started with this as soon as possible so the packages arrive in time for the holidays. It would be great if you could financially contribute any amount, as I said, I will send out as many packages as possible, based on how much we raise. I have included my paypal account ([email protected]). If you chose to not financially contribute I encourage you to at least write a letter of encouragement and support. Again, send it to me via PM or e-mail it to me and I will print them off and include them.

I think this is a great cause and with everyone here at BuckeyePlanet backing this, the possibility of making some Marines smile this holiday season is great!

Drunk and naked?

Damn. I guess caring and charitable is okay, too.

Would it be okay if I got drunk and naked before sending a contribution via PayPal?

Similarly to OCBF being pantsless most of the time, he and I are also drunk most of the time. Who needs permission!?

I do. So when Mrs. Katt exclaims "Why the fuck are you drunk and naked again!" I can blame it on Ryn.

I realize life has been busy for many since the original post was made during Meeshitagain week and now with Thanksgiving upon us however, if you plan on participating in this it would be greatly appreciated to do so sooner rather than later. I would like to have all the money collected by the middle of next week. I have only had 4 donations made so far and no letters of support. I simply can't do this all on my own. Please take a moment and strongly consider offering your support!

Hey Ryn, just get me an address and I'll send you a check and a letter ASAP. The Army's always there to help out the jarheads when they get in trouble. Seriously though, having been in the position before I know how important this kind of stuff can be. It's really tough on the morale when you are isolated like that. Those Marines are in a tough position, you would be surprised how much something like a care package can raise their spirits. I would hope that you consider sending some nice reading material along with the packages, perhaps a "Maxim" or something along those lines. Any how people please, these guys don't get enough of our support any more. I think collectively the nation would like to think that their Soldiers and Marines aren't still enduring those kind of hardships. the thruth is though, it's a bad as it's ever been for the infantry. Please be generous and give to this worthy cause.

Thanks for your donation, KSB and BuckyKatt. There has also been an anonymous donation, thank you!

I hope with the busy Thanksgiving weekend behind us people will settle down and give this thread a few moments of their time.

I need to have all monies donated by THIS Thursday. I will be doing the shopping Friday and Saturday... arranging all packages on Sunday and mailing them on Monday.

While the monies I have received are greatly appreciated this project is falling quite short of the original goal.

On a different note, I have received no letters of support to include in the boxes. I urge you to at least provide a letter of encouragement or a post that I can print up and include.
