Gene Smith on Ohio State athletics? ?glory years?

As the scandal that eventually became known as ?Tattoo-Gate? unfolded around the Ohio State football program, few people faced more criticism than OSU athletic director Gene Smith.

Tuesday, in an exclusive interview with The Lantern, Smith said OSU?s athletic program was ?glad to have (the scandal) behind us,? and was finally moving forward.

?We?re truly in our glory years,? Smith said of the athletic department.

And Smith said that means OSU has learned from previous issues, and has made changes to ensure it doesn?t happen again.

Changes in compliance
After more than 10 suspensions involving the OSU football program in the last year, many have questioned the job performance of OSU?s compliance staff.

Smith said compliance has increased its monitoring of athletes, especially outside of the university. When OSU becomes aware of potential violations, Smith said OSU investigates the matter directly by sending an employee to the place in question.

Barber shops, stores, restaurants ? Smith said OSU employees will go to address potential issues wherever they might be.

Smith said this was happening before, but not to the same scale.

?We know some of the bouncers downtown,? Smith said. ?We have someone on staff now, when we identify something we send them.?

OSU has also changed how it monitors student-athletes with cars.

?Our car program was under attack,? Smith said. ?There was nothing there actually, but we said OK, we could do some things better as a result of that, so we tightened up our registration program for our cars. So we strengthened that significantly.?

Gene Smith: Ohio State commits 'about 40' NCAA violations annually
By Pat Brennan

Published: Tuesday, May 22, 2012

The Ohio State athletic department self-reported 46 NCAA secondary violations since May 30, 2011, and OSU athletic director Gene Smith said he thinks that’s “natural.”

By Smith’s estimation, OSU fans should possibly expect about 40 violations most years, and that quantity doesn’t upset the Big Ten Conference.

OSU released records last week that revealed the 46 secondary violations, which can be attributed to 21 of the university’s 36 varsity sports. Of the quantity and variety of violations that were made public last week, Smith told The Lantern, “For us, it’s natural.”

“On an annual basis, we have about 40 (violations),” Smith said during a Tuesday interview. “It ranges in that area we’re sitting at. In that 40 range is where we always hang.

“Our whole thing is if we have 10 (violations), I’d have a problem. I mean, I really would because people are going to make mistakes

the fact is the compliance dept should have been checking more closely BEFORE the damn scandal.....that's what they're there for, I thought

Someone has to put a muzzle on Gene Smith. His quotes are perfect media fodder for making OSU look worse than we really are.

Gene Smith is simply not doing a good job.

There was nothing wrong with what he said (in this case)

?For us, it?s natural.?
Sloppy sentence that implies a culture of violations
?On an annual basis, we have about 40 (violations),? Smith said during a Tuesday interview. ?It ranges in that area we?re sitting at. In that 40 range is where we always hang.
?Our whole thing is if we have 10 (violations), I?d have a problem. I mean, I really would because people are going to make mistakes. And that means if I only have 10 out of 350 employees (and) 1,000 athletes ? something?s not right.?
These two paragraphs appear to be at odds with each other. I think I know what he meant to say but he didn't pull it off.

Well it IS natural though, I suppose you could clarify more but he's being confronted with an awkward question from the standpoint that most people don't understand how the system works. He's essentially being asked to answer for things that don't require an explanation because of what amounts to sloppy journalism.

Gene Smith: More NCAA violations are pending
By Pat Brennan
[email protected]
Published: Wednesday, May 23, 2012

There are more NCAA violations on the horizon for Ohio State, and athletic director Gene Smith said he doesn?t know what the NCAA will make of them.

Smith told The Lantern Tuesday the athletic department has 12 pending NCAA violations, and he doesn?t know if they will be deemed primary or secondary violations.

?We?ve got 12 pending,? Smith said. ?It may turn out to be secondary. It may not.?

OSU spokesman Dan Wallenberg said in a Wednesday email to The Lantern, that there were actually less than 12 pending violations. Wallenberg did confirm that the additional violations are being ?processed,? although he did not ?know the status of each situation? in regards to whether it was being processed by the university or the NCAA.

Smith?s mention of the additional violations to The Lantern comes less than a week after OSU released documents that revealed 46 self-reported secondary NCAA violations since May 30, 2011 ? the day former Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign.

The violations made public last week were attributed to 21 of the university?s 36 varsity sports. Of the quantity and variety of violations that were made public last week, Smith told The Lantern, ?For us, it?s natural.?

?On an annual basis, we have about 40 (violations),? Smith said during the Tuesday interview. ?It ranges in that area we?re sitting at. In that 40 range is where we always hang.

?Our whole thing is if we have 10 (violations), I?d have a problem. I mean, I really would, because people are going to make mistakes. And that means if I only have 10 out of 350 employees (and) 1,000 athletes ? something?s not right.?

Should OSU?s additional offenses be deemed secondary violations, it would add to the 46 from last week, bringing OSU closer to 60 violations since last May.

Smith must wake up in the morning and ask himself: "What can I do or say today that will most damage the image of Ohio State?". Why silence can't be an option for him (and for that matter Gee when it comes to athletics) until it isn't is beyond me. Instead, he comes out with with a statement that basically says "we're breaking the rules and we're too stupid to even know if we're breaking them a lot or just a little or to wait to talk about it until we figure it out." :bonk::smash::smash:

Funny tweet from Brian Windhorst that he is staying across the street from NCAA HQ and to save time they have assigned a parking space titled "OSU AD."

In reality, not funny as the guy is supposed to be competent.

Brian Windhorst should refrain from making such jokes, lest people make fun about him for his parking spot on LeBron's coattails.
