“So I studied it (the Pac-12 job). They did call me. And (Ohio State president Kristina Johnson) and I were having conversations at the same time. But I decided I had no interest, and that’s how the contract emerged. I just decided, ‘This is where I want to finish.’ So hopefully I get an opportunity to do that.”

Ohio State has hired a new senior associate athletic director who will oversee the football program.
Jocelyn Gates, who was the senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at Boston College for the past four years, was named Tuesday as a senior associate director of athletics at Ohio State.
Gates' husband, Dennis, is the head men's basketball coach at Cleveland State. They have two children – a daughter, Avery, and a son, Duke – and have a third on the way. So the opportunity to join her husband in the state of Ohio, and for their family to all be together much more often, was also a big incentive for her to take the job.

During her time at Boston College, where she worked with former Ohio State deputy athletic director Martin Jarmond, Gates oversaw the women's basketball, women's soccer and men's and women's golf programs, had departmental supervision of human resources, student-athlete development, compliance and strength and conditioning and was the athletic department's deputy Title IX coordinator. She was named the Division I FBS Nike Administrator of the Year by Women Leaders in College Sports in 2020.
She was also involved in the process of hiring former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as Boston College's head football coach.
“Last time I was in Columbus, it was to get Jeff Hafley to bring him to Boston College,” Gates said. “So Martin did teach me how to steal a great coach and bring him to the institution that you're at.”

“We look forward to being at capacity in all of our venues this upcoming season,” Smith said. “As long as the trends with Covid 19 and the variants keep moving in a positive direction and we don’t see any spikes, we’re hopeful we can get back to where we were prior to last year. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated if you have not already done so.”

'I just think it's risky': Ohio State AD Gene Smith has concerns about CFP games at Horseshoe
A College Football Playoff game in the Horseshoe.
The idea has made Ohio State fans salivate since last month's announcement that campus sites would play host to first-round games in an expanded 12-team playoff.
Picture it: Alabama players shivering around a sideline heater while seeing their breath for the first time, Clemson players slipping like fawns on a snowy field.
But while a December playoff game at Ohio Stadium would give the Buckeyes a competitive advantage, at least one prominent person is pumping the brakes on the idea.
Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith said he has serious reservations about the Horseshoe as a playoff site.
It’s a matter of safety because of possible bad weather, he said.
“I just think we ought to look at our reality,” said Smith, “and our reality is in the northern part of the country, we have inclement weather. And I don't want to put the kids in a situation where they're playing on the hard, frozen field.”

Smith said he believed that Ohio State could use Lucas Oil Stadium, a dome in Indianapolis, for a home playoff game. It’s only three hours from Columbus.
Another advantage for using Lucas Oil Stadium, Smith said, is that it would eliminate the logistical issues Ohio State would face in hosting a playoff game on short notice.
“Let's imagine we have that opportunity, and we're hosting,” Smith said. “I've got to get Ohio Stadium ready lickety-split. Could we do that? No question about that. But it'd be better if we already knew, let's say, we’re going to Indy.
“I'm not strong on this because obviously, I'm still thinking about it like everybody else. But I just think it's the best way to go — to have those kids inside.”

The whole point of home field advantage is to play at home Gene. Buckeye players will be fine in inclement weather, especially against southern teams. Who cares if the southern kids get a boo boo on the hard frozen ground!

I have misplaced my pants.
1. Do NFL players playing in December and January get more injuries than they did in September? I'm asking because I don't know the answer. If the answer is "yes", then I'm okay with looking into this further.
2. "Get the stadium ready lickety split???" Gene, how about you keep the stadium ready? Or, most of the time, you know if you're going to be a playoff team before the stadium is made "not ready". I'm not sure what is involved for getting it ready, but I'm sure there's more involved than I'd guess. How about if the Buckeyes are in the conference championship game, you keep the lights on. If they aren't and already have a bunch of losses, you go ahead and turn them off. If you aren't sure, start a poll on Buckeye Planet for what you should do.

I believe the problem is the Shoe is not fully winterized. They can handle the lower bowl only and limited restroom/concession facilities with state HS championships the first weekend of Dec, but not beyond that date and not at full capacity.
Torts had been pushing for a Winter Classic at the Shoe for years, and the process at prior venues is that the city and NHL split the cost of winterizing the stadiums that are picked. If the CBJ can get a game booked, that frees up a huge hurdle for Gene and lets the University off the hook for the expense.

Today was more of announcement around the concept and the collaboration that we're going to have. But I'm excited about the details that eventually will be worked out that will allow us to actually function around all the different issues.
"There's a gravitational shift in what's happening in athletics and to know that you have partners who share your values and think like you, it's comforting that we'll be able to collaborate. So I'm excited about it."
