Georgia Bulldogs (2021-2022 National Champions)

Georgia Bulldogs planning to have fans between the hedges

The Georgia Bulldogs are planning to have some fans for their football games played between the hedges.

For now, anyway.

Mirroring other schools in the Southeastern Conference, the university announced a ticket plan Wednesday that would allow 20-25% capacity at 92,746-seat Sanford Stadium.

That would mean crowds of about 18,500 to 23,000 for Georgia’s four home games in 2020.

Georgia Bulldogs QB Jamie Newman opts out over coronavirus concerns

Expected Georgia starting quarterback Jamie Newman has opted out of this season because of coronavirus concerns, he announced on social media Wednesday.

Newman, who is ranked No. 6 in the latest positional rankings by ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay, instead will begin preparing for the 2021 NFL draft.

The graduate transfer from Wake Forest leaves without ever playing a game for the Bulldogs.

USC transfer JT Daniels, who joined the Bulldogs in May and received an NCAA waiver to play this season, becomes the favorite to replace three-year starter Jake Fromm, who is now a rookie with the Buffalo Bills.

Kirby Smart finds no QB clarity in No. 4 Georgia’s 2nd scrimmage

The second preseason scrimmage for No. 4 Georgia on Saturday provided no clarity to the quarterback competition that continues without a top contender.

After Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman announced his decision to opt out on Wednesday, the competition took on a different look. Newman was cast by many observers, but not coach Kirby Smart, as the favorite to win the starting job for the Bulldogs’ opening game at Arkansas on Sept. 26.

Following Saturday’s practice, Smart said he’s no closer to finding a starter.

Smart said another transfer, former Southern Cal starter, JT Daniels and D'Wan Mathis worked with the first-team offense in the scrimmage. Freshman Carson Beck shared time with Daniels and Mathis with the second team. Stetson Bennett was with the third team.

Smart is eager to find clarity at the position.

“It’s a work in progress,” Smart said of the quarterbacks. “We had guys today that went out and practiced well. … We really want a guy to assume the lead and take the lead. That hasn’t happened yet.”
