The Browns are actively pursuing the trade of Gerard Warren. Crennel says he does not fit in the 3-4 scheme.

Teams are inquiring about Warren as a 4-3 DT. Nothing was said about possible compensation, but my guess would be either someone to fill a role on the DL or a 3rd round draft pick.

I gotta say, I'm happy about this one. The guy is so inconsistent and lazy it's getting really old.

Savage said he was "affordable" to play here this year. They are shopping him, and if they dont get any suitors, they will retain him since his cap hit isnt that bad this year. he will be cut next year however. i could see a team like Indy that is in need of defense giving up a late 3rd for him.

The four-year veteran defensive tackle, who many feel has not fulfilled the potential that made him the third player chosen overall in the 2001 draft, has been granted permission to discuss possible trade scenarios with other franchises, ESPN.com has learned. Team officials, sources told ESPN.com, went so far as to apprise Warren and his agent via letter that they were free to seek out deals.

It is believed that agent Joel Segal has already received interest from several teams and will meet with officials from those clubs this weekend at the annual combine workouts being held here. Several general managers quickly surveyed here on Thursday evening acknowledged they would at least explore a possible trade for Warren.

"Has he been everything he was advertised to be coming out (of college)?" asked one general manager. "Hell, no, he hasn't. But he's still a 300-pound guy who can be very active at times. Go shake a tree and see how many of those kinds of guys fall out."

In such circumstances, a player's agent typically seeks out suitors, and then tells the incumbent club about any interest he generates. Permission to seek a trade does not often result in a deal but Warren could draw considerable interest, even given the perception he has frequently underachieved. It is not known what the Browns would seek in return for Warren, who has only one year remaining on his contract.

While it is not certain if Cleveland will release Warren should a trade not be completed, that is a strong likelihood, particularly with the direction of the defense under first-year head coach Romeo Crennel.

Cleveland will attempt to switch in 2005 to the 3-4 defensive front that Crennel favored during his stretch as the New England Patriots defensive coordinator. That switch alone jeopardized Warren's stint in Cleveland, since the former University of Florida standout is more a 4-3 interior player, and probably not suited to playing at nose tackle in a three-man front. Neither was it likely that Warren could have made the switch to end in a 3-4.

Often criticized because his modest statistics never approximated the huge investment that Cleveland had in him, Warren, nicknamed "Big Money," nonetheless will have value in the market.

Warren, 26, has appeared in 60 games and started all but one of them. He has recorded 152 tackles, 10½ sacks, four forced fumbles and nine passes defensed.

In the 2001 draft, I wonder who looks like the better value at #3?

I love looking back at old drafts and disregarding what people thought back then. Everyone in the world had the Cardinals picking him and not getting to the Browns. We were all set to pick up Leonard Davis for our first offensive lineman. While many people loved LdT alot of people thought he was too small and I doubt he would have been as productive here in Cleveland vs San Diego.

the browns arent going to cut him if he doesnt get any trade offers. he is due mostly roster bonus money this year, with little base salary. even if cleveland trades him, they are still responsible for the bonus money, which is why he has some trade value.

a team in desperate need of DL help that picks late in the draft could offer up a 3rd rounder.

He has had a few off field issues as well in Cleveland. Talent-wise, I wouldn't be opposed to Cincinnati giving up a 3rd rounder for him, but Marvin Lewis has done too good a job off weeding players like him off of the Bengals roster to make the risk worthwhile.

LT certainly would have been a better choice, but the second coming of Jim Brown would still need a line better than what has existed in Cleveland since their reincarnation.

I do like what the team is doing by putting the onus on these players to find their own trades. I'll take just about any trade as far as picks go.

In a long line of other worthless scUM WR's.
I truly believe that Edwards is overated as well and will end up being a bust as well.
If the VIkings cannot make a deal with the Browns to move up to the #3 pick to grab M. Willams then I look for them to draft Edwards with the pick acquired from Oakland

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>Report: Warren Deal Close
By Barry McBride
Date: Mar 1, 2005

According to Jeff Schudel, the Broncos will part with a fourth-round pick for Warren. That, plus a smattering of Browns and surprisingly low-key site announcements to start off a busy Tuesday of Browns and NFL News...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
According to a report by Jeff Schudel in this morning's Lake County News-Herald, the Browns are close to a deal with the Denver Broncos for defensive tackle Gerard Warren. The deal is reportedly for a fourth-round pick in this year's draft.

The Broncos had been rumored to be one of the teams - along with the Colts and several others - to have an interest in the mercurial Warren. Now with the Broncos, recently departed defensive line coach Andre Patterson could scarcely contain his glee earlier this week at the notion of bringing in Warren, who finished 2004 relatively strong. Warren had a blistering finish to the 2001 season as well, and Patterson believes that Warren can be very effective outside of the controlled defensive scheme employed last year by defensive coordinator Dave Campo.

The move, along with yesterday's release of Robert Griffith, shows the Browns continue to purge themselves of high-priced defenders. Warren was due to receive a $1.3 million roster bonus on Wednesday, and Griffith was due to receive a $1.2 million roster bonus.

The moves are not without some risk and cost. Griffith was the Browns leading tackler in 2004, and Warren has shown flashes of potential which, if displayed more consistently, would make him a top defensive tackle.

Then again, the same comments were prevalent regarding Warren prior to his drafting in 2001. Savage and Crennel, apparently, feel it isn't worth $1.3 million to see if this is the year that "Big Money" lives up to his nickname.

I was hoping we could get a third round pick for him, but at this point we will take what we can get.
