I think he's a great coach. But I also think there's too many cooks in the kitchen... and that's largely because Schiano didn't end up landing the Tenn job. Grinch was hired to replace him and be the guy... it's time to realize that, move forward, and see if he can actually do it.
Schiano doesn't want to be here longer than he has to. So we either continue with this impasse and uncertain direction with Defense... or consolidate things and go in a singular direction.
We're not going to know if Grinch has it or not until he gets that chance... and he's not going to get that chance until Schiano gets his opportunity as a Head Coach somewhere else.

To add to that, I think Schiano came here to work under Urban and Urban being Urban, Schiano was ok with that. I'm not sure he'll be ok doing the same under Day. It also neuters his ability to recruit since he can't legitimately claim that he'll be around next year. I know he had a huge impact on the recruiting trail last year, but I don't recall hearing the same news this year. Maybe it's related?

Well, the scheme is based largely in having the best Dline in the country and the best individual player. When Nick went down, the adjustments were just brutal to achieve.

They weren't perfect before Nick went down but there was a learning curve still in effect games in that would have caught up by game 5 or 6 and Purdue never would have happened. You just don't lose a Bosa and recover in the same season.

That said, the LB's on the line of scrimmage for so long was awful and for some reason the guys just seemed as if not to know their assignments. Why? Million Dollar question right there. Also, why did it take so long to get Brenden White reps? The only thing about incumbent coaches that gets my dander up is they sit too long in their comfort zones even when they see the dumpster burning. Meyer was guilty of it too. Only coach you see making those changes regularly is Saban. That's the way it goes.

I dont hate the job Schiano has done here and if he stays we'll be fine. I'm also ok with a "youth movement" and we get the best and brightest new faces in CFB. Either way, GO BUCKS!

I would say that if you built a defense based on the 11 starters and it goes to shit when one guy gets injured then you are a dumbass. Just saying.

I don't think that is what happened. I think Nick was able to make plays before the secondary was torched, however he was also on the Dline that gave up big plays to shit teams. Nick had the ability to dominate and take over a game and hide whatever flaws were always present.

There is no way to slice it. This defense under achieved. Even if we agree that the players may not be the caliber of player of previous years, which I do not totally feel by the way, young maybe, less talent, no way, we still had to watch a defense that was not as good as 8 other teams in the B1G. Think about that. Maryland had a better defense than we did this year.

I'd say building a scheme to ensure a single team on a generational talent like Bosa is a solid plan actually. Completely agree they were too slow to adapt once he got hurt.

As far as the defense being gashed while Bosa was still healthy that is true but the sacks, strip 6's and safety's were happening too so you had the trade off of big plays we have discussed before.

Once Bosa went down the offensive big plays remained and it seemed like it took up to The Game for the defense to get back into making big plays of their own.

True his wife is a buckeye but... Young guys with Urban and Satan fighting over his services.... I dont know what his relationship is... maybe Day is like “fuck it you HC the D” they might be awesome but if his has HC aspirations I think it would be better to learn from Urban than Day...

maybe thats why Urban wants to mentor... maybe he sticks around and helps attract young talent and keeps them happy by mentoring them...
