I still have my Dreamcast as well. And PSone, Gamecube, Genesis, N64, etc. Like you said, some games are good enough that they don't go out of style.
I'll date myself a bit here, but I have Infocom text games on my laptop. I was in the middle of A Mind Forever Voyaging (for like the 10th time) when the lightning strike happened. The one downside to the rapid progression of gaming technology is that, back in the day, games had to be great. Now, some just get away with looking good. Which is why I'm so behind a company like Rockstar who says "screw status quo, we're going to make shit we want to play ourselves."
Funny thing about the hard drive. Nice graphics are great, but I agree 100% that the biggest appeal of the XB is the HDD. They actually considered not putting one in the XB2 to cut costs. I'd have had to choke someone out in Redmond.
Back to the Dreamcast, I have to give them some credit. Putting mini screens in the controllers was a fantastic idea, particularly for those of us who enjoy playing sports games head to head. And NFL 2k2 was the first gigantic leap forward in console football games. My mouth was agape for a good hour when I first loaded that title up on 9/9/99. And the play was as good as the visual presentation (at the time).
