Thanks all. All I wanted today is to keep our power on. And with only a few brief exceptions, I got my wish. Not that we're out of the woods yet, still getting 50mph winds right now, and half my backyard seems to be under water, but that I'm here typing this is an unexpected positive.
4 hurricanes in 6 weeks, and Bonnie hit us pretty hard as well before that -- so 5 major storms in 2 months. Unlike some friends and family down South, I can at least say we took no direct blasts from a 'cane making landfall. So, uh, *whew*.
I've been through (minor) earthquakes, lightning strikes (grumble), severe winter storms, nor'easters, squalls, near tornados, etc., and I've got to say that hurricanes take the cake. And I'm saying that only having seen winds up to 70mph. I cannot imagine riding out a storm with winds over 110mph. Even at the lower speeds, there's a constant threat of tornados, and it just doesn't go away. It's your house shaking, the power flickering (or going out), and a constant level of noise that never quite lets you entirely relax. We really started getting smacked around 4pm, and it hasn't let up. Isn't supposed to until 2am. Where "letting up" just means the average wind speed should drop to the 30s-40s.
So to any and all (like Jo's dad) who were around Ft. Pierce where Jeanne first made landfall -- my hat's off to you, because I can't begin to imagine the plain horror a full blast from a Cat.3+ hurricane must bring.
Anyway, 10 minutes left in my bDay and the power is still on. My luck dictates that at 12:01am, it will go off and stay off for 3 days, but I got what I most wanted.
One last thought -- what's the definition of comedy? That the Jaguars are 3-0 and the local media will not shut up about it, and they STILL can't fill the stadium enough to prevent blackouts. Lol.
