Hate more: ND or UM? (split from ND thread)

Best of all worlds? Michigan and OSU each 11 and 0, ranked 1 and 2 in the nation. The media swarming both campuses, ND, Okie, Tennessee fans on the outskirts screaming "me too, hey, look at us!" A packed stadium, international TV audiance, and the sounds of Across the Field and Victors in the background. Now that's what I'd love to see each fall, followed by our playing and beating someone in the NC game and Michigan winning their bowl game too. End of season OSU #1, U of M #2. Wisconsin and Iowa rounding out the top ten, Illinois and Purdue in the top 30.

I guess I'm an apostate, but I don't hate Michigan. They're our rival in football and other sports, and I desperately want to beat them in everything. Beyond that...

I actually root for them in their first 11 games. I want them to be undefeated going into The Game. Even if we're having a sub-par season, I still want them to be undefeated going into the game. I want them to know how it feels to be that close to glory...that close to immortality only to have it snatched away at the last moment by an Ohio State team.

ND--I hate. Miami--I hate. Penn State--I don't necessarily hate, but as one who listened to all of their bs leading up to '93, I sure enjoy watching them struggle with a B10 schedule.

As a university, I respect the hell out of Michigan. When it comes to non-athletics, the g-damned Fredo universities are our real enemies. There is not a week that goes by where Miami and OU do not try and screw Ohio State on things that really matter--funding, admissions, duplicate graduate/professional programs, differentiation among Ohio universities. In the larger scheme of things, they are Ohio State's true enemies--not a fellow Big Ten/CIC member.

Well, since we're discussing whom we should be rooting for in the ND-scUM game...

Regardless of which team a Buckeye fan dislikes more, the realities of the BCS behoove a tOSU fan to normally cheer for teams that the Buckeyes will play when those teams face off against teams that tOSU will not play in the regular season.

It doesn't matter if it's Cincinnati-Eastern Kentucky, Iowa-Purdue, or scUM-ND, I'm pulling for the team that tOSU plays in order to boost the Buckeyes' ranking in the computer polls. Unless there's a situation where a loss by a team tOSU played could help move tOSU up to #2 in the BCS. Which could happen this year if Texas was #2 in the BCS and tOSU was #3 late in the year.

Only after factoring in what's best for tOSU's national title hopes do I allow myself to factor in other reasons, like what's best for recruiting or which team do I dislike more. But I think it's great that ND and scUM play each other often, because one of them has to lose, and that's always tolerable.

You Notre Dame lovers might want to think about "mythical" Big 10 championships. If Notre Dame should sweep Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue (God spare us that) and OSU should slip against one of them the media will be all over the story. Outsider Wins Big 10!

You might also want to think about "regional" champions. It's going to be a very rare situation nationally that will create a Notre Dame - OSU bowl game because the teams play in the same region and bowl game match ups are almost exclusively region against region.

Finally, picture this, Notre Dame beats Michigan by a point at home... say when the Michigan QB drops the snap at the five yard line with a minute and change to go (sound familiar) and goes undefeated. Ohio State kills Michigan 35 - 7 and goes undefeated...which team is going to be higher ranked? Which team is going to the better bowl game? Which team is going to the NC?

If you think the answer to any of those questions is Ohio State you are clearly dillusional. Wake up! Smell the damn coffee. Hate Michigan all you want, but every Big 10 win over Notre Dame is a win for ALL Big 10 teams.

This one's an easy one for me.

If you're born a Buckeye, then naturally you hate Michigan with every ounce of you. A way to answer this question could also be interpreted by asking "Who would you rather beat (if you could only beat one)?"

Let me tell you all one thing. I would much rather win against Michigan and lose to Notre Dame in the same season, rather than beat Notre Dame and lose to Michigan, during the season.

Fuck Michigan.

Ya know

Now that I think about it. It's been a few years since I ran into someone who admitted they were a Michigan fan. I know about 4-5 who went there for college and they don't even follow football. That's weird. I live in CA, but it's still weird.

I have to comment that a few of the ND fans at the Fiesta bowl took themselves way too seriously and almost started a really unnecessary fight in our section.

Every team's got a few bad egg fans. The ND fans were pretty classy in my experience. As for scUM, I wish I knew someone who would admit they like them.

But beating Michigan just makes the winter...well the best kind of winter.

I've seen a couple of Michigan fans, but I'm fortunate to only know one. The guy gives me shit for my Buckeye clothing and apparel, and makes sure to mention that we suck.

Haha, I always make sure to mention that we've won the last four of five meetings, and he always makes some bullshit excuses about each loss; my favorite being "Gonzalez ran out of bounds on that catch, and even if he didn't, the ball hit the ground."

At that point, I just thank God that I wasn't born the scum of all scUM, and born a Buckeye.

With a completely clear conscious, I can say that I would much prefer scUM to beat ND than vice versa. I hate tsun as much as anyone, but c'mon. Who really wants to spend the rest of the year hearing about NDs inevitable national championship run and how overrated the B10 is?

Honestly though, if you had asked me this same question 2 years ago I may have answered differently.

EDIT: I swear my BP raised a few points while pondering this...

I fucking hate Michigan. Fuck them.

Now, then, why... why do I hate them? Because they have my respect. Because they are a worthy adversary. And because they are the rival of my alma mater. Oh, yes... fuck Michigan.

But, Notre Dame? That school could fall in to a steaming pile of shit and I wouldn't give a rats ass. Respect? No.

When ND and Michigan play, I root for (and usually get) a game full of miscues... one team begging the other to win. Fumbles, picks.. poor play calling and even worse execution. Like I say, 9 times out of 10, this is exactly what I get, and I'm happy. And if Michigan wins it, even better. For when Ohio State beats Michigan, it's all the sweeter.
