OHIO STATE DEFEATS HAWAI’I, 6-4, THURSDAY NIGHT
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team defeated Hawai’i, 6-4, Thursday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Burhenn worked seven innings in a quality start to improve to 4-1 on the year, while junior left-handed reliever Andrew Magno picked up his third save of the season. Sophomore Dillon Dingler and redshirt sophomore Brent Todys each had multi-hit games. With their third straight win, the Buckeyes improve to 11-10 overall, while the Rainbow Warriors drop to 9-12.
QUOTE FROM COACH
“It’s huge to get Dillon back in the lineup with his presence and production,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It’s awfully nice to write Dillon Dingler on the lineup card. Garrett was up in the zone a little bit, but threw strikes. Our defense played well behind him and it was good to see that with Nick Erwin at third base with our adjusted defensive lineup. It was big to have Magno put up a zero in the eighth for us.”
QUALITY START
After allowing three runs in the opening three frames, Burhenn settled down on the mound, retiring nine straight hitters before a two-out single by the Rainbow Warriors in the top of the seventh. He left two stranded in the seventh on a fly out to Nolan Clegg in centerfield. He worked seven innings and scattered eight hits on three runs, three earned, one walk and three strikeouts.
TIED AT 3 AFTER 3
The Rainbow Warriors plated two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Ethan Lopez doubled down the right field line and a RBI ground out made it 2-0. Ohio State answered quickly with three runs on four hits in the bottom. Dominic Canzone worked a nine-pitch at-bat before lining a single to right center. Matt Carpenter ripped a RBI triple down the right field line to score Canzone. Brady Cherry continued to swing a hot bat when he rocketed a RBI double off the wall in right to plate Carpenter. A sac fly by Dingler gave the Scarlet and Gray a 3-2 lead. A RBI single by Alex Baeza knotted the score at 3-all in the top of the third.
MEMORABLE HIT FOR THE ROOKIE
Freshman third baseman Nick Erwin came up with a clutch two-out RBI single vs. Hawai’i left-handed starter Jeremy Wu-Yelland in the bottom of the fourth to score Dingler to give the Buckeyes the 4-3 advantage.
BIG INSURANCE RUNS
The Buckeyes came up with two runs in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. Dingler singled to right field to start it off. Todys then hit an opposite field triple down the right field line to make it 5-3. A RBI single by Nolan Clegg pushed the lead to three runs.
BULLPEN TALK
Right-handed reliever TJ Brock allowed two walks to begin the eighth and was relieved by left-handed reliever Andrew Mango. He left two on base with a pop-up to Pohl and one strikeout.
