HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I think the issue of run blocking not being as great is because we have Tackles playing the Guards positions, which make sense as Stroud is often upright with a clean pocket. Guards are generally shorter and stockier for run blocking where as taller Tackles have trouble blocking shorter DT during run plays, that's why TH does well running outside...plus is is fast too.

It might be but do you give up say a ypc less having those guys in there to give up 0 sacks vs a good attacking Defense? Thats what we gave up last night and it was damned impressive by that Oline. Hell he only had to roll out a couple times from pressure. I still say the unexpected snow bugged us out a little in the beginning of that TUN game or we go in with the lead at halftime.

Dude, I wasn't complaining. It was just an observation and a probable cause for this year's run blocking.
I didnt take it like that. It's been discussed since they made the change but maybe OSU's identity now requires something closer to that evidenced by last night. If your QB can be that precise and the WRs are that good, maybe you can tweak the Oline and modify your running game accordingly, no?

If Stroud is playing like that and his receivers are catching what he's tossing, you probably don't even need to run. He was unconscious. Just perfectly placed ball after perfectly placed ball and the defenders had no chance. That was the greatest performance I've seen from a Buckeye QB (hell, maybe ANY qb), maybe close to even with JTBIV against the pedtards in 2017. And we've had some unbelievable QB play the last few years.

Except that play style doesn’t always work come late October/early November in Big 10 country.

It’s going to be something to watch IMO. It’s great to be able to throw the ball over the yard, especially if you make CFP and are guaranteed great conditions. In Big 10 weather you can’t always count on a playing field that is conducive to slinging the ball around. In those games, you need to rely on a solid run game, and it just wasn’t consistent enough this year. Like many others, I think (4) tackles starting was the likely issue. Our inside push of the interior 3 wasn’t nearly as strong as previous years. But I also think Dawand Jones is a sub-average run blocker and very limited in run game schemes which also minimized our run and screen game on his side of field (you can’t pull him and he’s extremely limited in screen game bc he struggles to get to second level). Helluva pass blocker though and that cannot be denied. Only one poor game, and unfortunately it was against Michigan.

Amen.

My dad and I were saying this all season.

I recognize the problems on D and hope Knowles is the coach Ryan Day thinks he is, for Day’s sake.

But this isn’t a post to bitch about the D after a win. What I wanted to acknowledge is what the offense is doing under Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson. In just the last 16 games, this offense has broken every single significant one game counting stat record that was in the OSU record books. Rushing yards in a game, receiving yards in a game, passing yards in a game… since 2018 we’ve also seen the single season rushing, receiving yards, receptions, passing yards, and passing TD records fall, along with the freshman rushing TD record. Under Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson, three different QBs have placed Top 4 for the Heisman each in their first year as a college starter, the previous two were 1st round NFL picks, and Stroud will almost certainly be QB1 or QB2 in 2023.

This has been a tremendous run of offensive output, and as great as the offense could usually be in 2018 & 2019, it’s kicked into another gear over the last 20 games.

"The defense is bad! Fix it!" we howled in the direction of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, rending our Buckeye hoodies asunder in a fit of pique. "Damn you, Ryan Day! Fix it now!"

And... he did. Ryan Day went out and hired Jim Knowles from Oklahoma State, widely thought to be one of the best defensive minds in college football. They then plucked one of Knowles' starting safeties out of the transfer portal to help him complete his scheme, and (perhaps surprisingly) ended up firing offensive line coach Greg Studrawa, who oversaw a unit that underachieved at times in 2021. "At times" being the operative phrase here, because damn, they were still pretty good most of the time. But not consistently great, which is the point.

These are aggressive moves in the vein of a seasoned general manager, not a still very young head coach coming off just his second full season as head coach at Ohio State.

Just sayin': That's why he gets paid the "big bucks", i.e. to make the tough decisions.
