HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I was there in the early ‘90s so I fully appreciate Urban and my initial post referred to the the last decade as a golden era. There were problems, though, that kept that time from being better and, for that matter, could’ve made them worse. But for a superhuman injured effort by JTB, we lose another one to michigan Lite, for example. My hope and expectation, based upon what we saw last year and since he took over, is that Day will continue what Urban started and given that continuity may be able to make the tweaks that make a difference for the better.

So, you don't think we shit away at least two chances to get back in the playoff and win it and lost twice to Clemson in nationally covered games? Ok.
We missed three chances at the CFP where we most definitely should've been in. The absolutely moronic play calling against Sparty in 2015, and getting savagely ape-fucked by mediocre West Division teams in 2017 and 2018.

I count two bowl losses under Urban. Both to Clemson. One respectable score, the second... not so much.

I think that some of Dabo’s success may have come from their success against us, no? But they weren’t mediocre opponents.

Sadly, that stellar bowl record is due in part to being a national contender year in and year out and playing teams below us due to losses to MSU, Iowa, Purdue, instead of playing our peers. A never been the same USC after Pete Carroll? Washington? Perennial big game bed shitter ND? Those are not Ohio State’s peers. Then, aside from that run in 2014/15, getting showed up by Clemson twice are the only other two Bowl games. One year of playing the best, three beating up on little sisters and two getting beat by Clemson.

Ok, but they were still NY6 wins, and USC and UW were still Pac-12 champs while that ND team had plenty of NFL talent. Those wins weren't anything to sneeze at. You didn't dismiss Clemson's wins over us when we played them with one-dimensional teams (No D in 13 and no O in 16). They still count

No. But in a way, with Urban Meyer and the talent on those rosters, they were still lesser teams in consolation games. Again, we were all spoiled and I’m not whining. It’s tough to say these things and not sound whiny.

Only a couple other teams can say those things and those are the ones that we, as fans, try to compare Ohio State to.

Heading in to that Cotton Bowl with USC, the Rose with Washington and the Fiesta with ND, did you feel like they were Ohio State’s to lose? I did. Anything could have happened but Ohio State was expected to win those games based off of talent and coaching.

To me it kind of ignores how difficult it is to get to the CFP from the Big Ten vs ACC and Notre Dame. Add on the scheduling favors given to Alabama by the SEC - although they have had to play tough games against Georgia and Auburn - and I have to think the Bucks have done better than could be expected. Lost in the glamor and clamor of 7 straight against TTUN and laying 62 on Don Browns #1 defense, is the sweet satisfaction in knowing we also knocked them out of the final four. Payback 's a bitch.

The "system" is rigged right now for the SEC and ESPiN sponsored teams to make the playoff. ESPN has too much power over college football but it is what is is right now. All the Buckeyes can do is take care of their own business and not shit the bed against mediocre teams . With even a little luck we can be a playoff team this year.
I'm excited!

Bolded still falls ultimately on the head coach. As did losing by 31 at Iowa and 29 at Purdue. While UFM had arguably the best 7-year run ever at Ohio State, there still were some serious warts.

I was addressing the point that if our wins against USC, UW, and ND get dinged because they were merely top 10 teams and not all-time greats, then shouldn't Clemson's wins over us get the same treatment? The 2013 and 2016 versions had a lot of talent but serious flaws too.

I just don't think being the favorite in those bowl games should diminish the quality of the wins. Bowl games are hard to win as a favorite too. Meyer had to get those teams mentally prepared after falling just short of the playoff to face very talented underdogs. He went 5-2 against top 10 teams in bowls. That's outstanding no matter how you slice it.

So this is Day’s thread and all, but related.

One thing that doesn’t seem to be recognized in the recent posts that I hope / think we see Day continue is what’s happening with the team off the field. The lack of Fulmer Cup points during Urban’s tenure, frankly, was impressive.

Bring together 120 or so guys and for seven years I think we can count the number of off-field issues the team had on what? One hand? He either did an amazing job of keeping things quiet (I’m sure there’s some of that) or the team understood and did their part to keep clean (I’m sure there was a lot more of that).

Hell, just being the parent of a teenager, I know how easy it is for stupid things to get really stupid really quick. 120 dudes who are such good athletes, and have the swagger that goes with it (not a knock), it would be very easy to have shit flaring up way more than it did.

So yeah... a couple of head scratchers here and there... and a couple of Fulmer Cup points? I’ll take a couple of head scratchers.

Losing is Ok but getting your teeth kicked in is what did us in... 16 was Clemson, 17 was Iowa, and 18 was Purdue.

Meyer's teams are the most talented groups ever fielded but you just never knew what team would show up.

IMO what destroyed our team was personnel decisions. Withers massive cushion derailed 13, Warriner/Beck blew 15 and 16, Davis and Schiano ruined 17 and 18.
