HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

We know Day can coach and recruit great offense. But fixing the defense will be where the rubber meets meets the road. For 2019 my first thought is no Big Ten team makes the National Championship Playoffs again. That the Big will cannabalize intself out of a spot.

PRESSER BULLETS: RYAN DAY HOLDS HIS FIRST BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS PRESS CONFERENCE
Dan Hope on July 18, 2019 at 2:46 pm @dan_hope

For the first time as Ohio State's new head coach, Ryan Day represented the Buckeyes at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday afternoon.

In his first open question-and-answer session of the afternoon, Day took the podium at the Hilton Chicago for about 15 minutes for his official head coach's press conference.

A quick recap of what the Buckeyes' new leader had to say:

  • Day opened his press conference by thanking Jim Delany for everything he has done in his three decades as the Big Ten's commissioner.
  • On K.J. Hill staying at Ohio State for his fifth year: "Him deciding to come back was a huge deal for us."
  • On Jonathon Cooper: “He’s the epitome of what it means to be a Buckeye."
  • On the defense: "There's a group of guys over there that are salty, and have a lot to prove."
  • Day said the Buckeyes plan to use a wide variety of personnel groupings on defense.
  • Tuf Borland is "being pushed" by Teradja Mitchell at middle linebacker.
  • Day praised the tight end group, saying that Luke Farrell, Rashod Berry and Jeremy Ruckert are all battling for playing time.
  • Day said there are seven offensive linemen battling for playing time (Thayer Munford, Jonah Jackson, Josh Myers, Wyatt Davis, Nicholas Petit-Frere, Branden Bowen and Joshua Alabi) and said that battle will play out in August.
  • "I think the easy thing to ask is how are you different than Urban Meyer, and that's not something I really like to answer, because first off, you don't replace a legend." Said he just wants to be himself.
  • "I feel great about the team. I love our team. I love our players. I love being around the guys."
  • "We have a lot to prove. This is a new staff, this is a new team. We haven't done anything."
  • On Ohio State quarterbacks Justin Fields and Gunnar Hoak: "Justin and Gunnar are going to compete like heck to win the job, but at the end of the day, it's going to come down to who can play the game."
  • Do you think you'll talk to Urban Meyer much during the season? "For sure. I'd be crazy not to. ... He's been unbelievable in terms of understanding when to be there, and when to step away."
  • Day says Ohio State's wide receivers have an unselfish mentality, and they need to keep that mentality in that room.
  • On Chip Kelly: "He's like a father, brother, uncle to me ... he and Urban are probably the two biggest influences, Steve Addazio would be the third, in what they've done for me and my career."

Day is set to meet with the media for another hour in an hourlong breakout interview session from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., while Ohio State seniors Jonathon Cooper, Jordan Fuller and K.J. Hill will field questions from reporters from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., so stay tuned with Eleven Warriors for more updates on the Buckeyes later this afternoon and evening.

SKULL SESSION: JIM HARBAUGH'S INSECURITY IS SHOWING, K.J. HILL KNEW OF JUSTIN FIELDS' TRANSFER, AND RYAN DAY PREPARING FOR LOSSES

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE L WORD.
The haters are telling me that Ryan Day's going to lose a game at some point. I know, I know – it sounds like utter nonsense that we need not worry ourselves with, but because Our Dear Leader is wise, he has prepared for it.

Do not fear.

From Doug Lesmerises of Cleveland.com:

“It’s one of those things you have to think about and have a plan for,” Day said at the end of his own long answer. “You can’t just drive with no brakes and think that everything is going to go great, and the minute something goes bad, you fall apart. You can’t do that, because I’m in this thing for the long haul, and I know our staff is, too.”

...

“The expectations are so high here, if you don’t win them all, the minute you lose you can’t just come crumbling and fall apart,” Day said. “And to our credit, last year we lost that bad game (at Purdue), but we were able to fight ourselves out of it. And it was ugly. But we kind of clawed back out of it and had an unbelievable season.”

That ended with a 13-1 record, a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl win.

A similarly unbelievable season may be ahead. But aside from Meyer’s unmatchable 12-0 debut in 2012, almost every OSU coach has lost some in Year 1. Jim Tressel was 7-5. John Cooper was 4-6-1. Woody Hayes was 4-3-2. Day’s closest comparison may be to Earle Bruce, as both followed a legend who left for reasons other than on-field performance. Tressel and Cooper took over programs in trouble. Bruce and Day were better positioned to win.

Bruce went 11-1. Maybe Day will as well. But, in my mind, everyone needs to check those brakes. It’d be unwise and unfair not to.

Most coaches don't go 12-0 or even 11-1 in their first season as a head coach with a first-time starter at quarterback – I get that.

But most coaches also don't put together the No. 2 recruiting class in the country and recruit one of the most talented offenses of all-time in their first try, or pull in the highest-rated quarterback prospect in program history to replace the best passer in program history (which he developed).

Yeah, maybe Ohio State loses a few in 2019, but Day's exceeded expectations everywhere else so far, why would anyone be shocked if he overachieves again once the season starts?
