HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I got that 2014 feeling. A lot of uncertainty... very possibly an early loss... but a calm and quiet confidence.
The core team is all there with talented QB and coming historically bad year of D with new staff... just waiting to see how long it takes for everything to gel.
Not saying they'll go all the way... it's rarefied air and a level up in competition. But i do think a lot of people are underestimating this team - both the quality of staff and players.
Not seeing a lot of silliness or bravado either. People are grinding. Seeing it in recruiting and about to see it on Saturdays. The quiet before the storm.

SKULL SESSION: LINCOLN RILEY'S ADVICE TO RYAN DAY, JEFFREY OKUDAH HYPE, AND TEXAS SLANDER

THE BLUEPRINT.
Ohio State's situation where a hall of fame head coach tossed the keys of a top-tier program to a neophyte with absolutely no head coaching experience would have been pretty much unheard of, except that exact same scenario happened in Norman, Oklahoma two years ago.

And to be honest, that seems to be going swimmingly.

Through two seasons, Lincoln Riley and the Sooners are 24-4 with two College Football Playoff appearances and two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks. Needless to say, Ryan Day will gladly take his advice.

From Tom Rittenberg of ESPN:

"He's one of the few guys who I thought could probably relate to the situation," Day told ESPN of Riley at Big Ten media days. "The best advice he gave me was: 'Don't worry about anything in terms of changing, anything like that. Just make sure you do what's right.'

"I thought that was a great point because a lot of people ask, 'What are you changing? What's this? What's that?' If something works, you've got to make sure you do what's right. That's what I've done."

...

"He's done a tremendous job everywhere he's been, so I fully expect he's going to go do well," Riley said. "But the easy answer is, you better have success. It's the same thing with me when I took over [for] Bob. A place like Oklahoma or Ohio State, those places, it's not the easiest thing to do, but it's a pretty simple answer. And do it the right way, which he will.

"He seems like a great guy. He really seems unfazed by it. I didn't get a sense at all that he wasn't ready for it. He seemed completely ready, confident in it. That says a lot."

Day also talked with Riley about calling offensive plays as the head coach, which he plans to do at Ohio State, as well as time-management challenges. But maintaining continuity was a theme, as both men follow Hall of Fame-caliber coaches and take over championship-level teams.

When Day inevitably turns out to be a home-run hire just like Riley, I pray this starts a new trend in college football of giving jobs to individuals with no head coaching experience because I'm tryna put my NCAA14 prowess to the test. Someone's gotta be desperate enough to give me a chance. I'm cheap.

Column: How Day handles quarterback “competition” is crucial to first season as head coach

IMG_0206-1lnvx6b-530x353.jpg

There’s a holding pattern on reviews that could be written about Ryan Day.

Thus far, the first-year head coach checks most boxes: His first recruiting class is No. 2 in the nation, he has hired five assistant coaches with great track records at either the college or pro level and maintained Ohio State’s support staff.

The program’s veins course with talent that took home a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl victory in 2018, its muscle is secure under former Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Mickey Marotti and the nervous center is firing well under accomplished assistant coaches.

All that’s left is for the top mind to prove he can move it all in sync on the big stage — a big factor in how he handles the sport’s most important position, and with a quarterback that is the highest-rated recruit in the history of a program transfers in from another school, the expectation is that he starts immediately.

That hasn’t been the case for sophomore Justin Fields since transferring from Georgia. Day continues to reiterate that there’s competition, whether from redshirt freshman Matthew Baldwin in the spring before he transferred to TCU or redshirt junior Gunnar Hoak, a recent transfer from Kentucky.

“Justin and Gunnar are going to compete like heck to go win the job,” Day said. “At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to who can play the game.”

Some would point to then-redshirt sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ performance in 2018, setting school records for yards, touchdowns and completion percentage, as a reason Fields could be a plug-and-play.

At Big Ten Media Days, Day dispelled the comparison of Fields to Haskins, stating that the latter’s experience in the program allowed him to put up the numbers he did as a first-time starter.

“A lot of people think, ‘Dwayne went from zero to 60 so fast, that he just jumped into the Heisman Trophy race,” Day said. “That was a very different scenario than Justin Fields.”

Day said Fields is still learning the offense, and therefore can’t be named the starting quarterback.

“He’s got a step ahead of Gunnar, because Gunnar just got here. He didn’t even go through the spring,” Day said. “[Quarterbacks coach] Mike Yurcich is new to our staff as well. That whole room is literally in the first step of the progression.”

Love your use of the word "quiet". In fact, I would love a season with no media blathering. Just go out, win all your games, and shock the hell out of everybody. Day's a winner. Watch him! :day: :oh:

As far as I'm concerned, it's 3-0.

Because he's 3-0.
That's like when I was 5 and my dad let me sit on his lap and "drive" the car. That wasn't his team, it wasn't his staff. Those games don't make him a good head coach anymore than the 2011 season made Luke Fickell a bad coach. In fact, Luke looks like a pretty good coach now that he's actually in charge of a program and not a hamstrung temporary interim coach.

I realize the record book shows Day at 3-0. That's a technicality. He actually hasn't done shit yet.

Didn’t Urban come along and go 12-0 the very next year?

Day coached the team for 3 games. They’re his wins.

He has retained good coaches, made good hires of new coaches. He has 2 of the top 2 recruiters in the country (1 promotion, 1 new hire). He kept 1 of the top D-line coaches in the country. He has recruited at an extremely high level. Whether you view him as 3-0 or 0-0, he has accomplished quite a bit. Oh, and by the way, he has represented the University very well in the process.

He was the head for those games...not just a "technicality". He was just as responsible for what the team did on the field for those three games as was Meyer. Doesn't matter what you're "concerned", those are his wins.

Couldn’t have done any better. Good thing Tom Herman wasn’t around to take over. I remember when he was on the staff and there was envisioning of him being the man to take over whenever Urban retired.

Home run.

I agree. A couple of years ago I figured the job would go to Herman (regardless of where he was coaching) or Day. Didn't think it would happen this soon which is why I believe there wasn't a big "Nationwide Search". Had Day screwed the pooch last year, I believe it could've happened.

They got it right....

And I don't give a fuck if we lose every game this season as long as we win Thanksgiving weekend. :oh:

He took the team through training camp and the first 3 games of the season. That seems like a little more than just some lap driving. It was a fun 3 games as well.
