Certainly seems to be working for the gump down at Clemson.

I cannot expect Day to match Meyer. What Meyer did here is unreal.

What are you talking about exactly? I mean I wouldn't consider taking anything away from Meyer, but Day is taking over an entirely different program. There are no bare cupboards that I know of. As far as I can tell there are no clown shows. Not sure if he can go undefeated against scUM( I'm sure he can but I won't say it here) but I'd like to think he can match the National Titles Urban won here. I'd certainly like to think he can beat Clemson. Not to mention...if he runs the table this year, he might match the total BIG COY awards Urban won in his career.

EDIT: Urban did a lot as a football coach here. Might have done more for the program though. Not sure Day can touch him in that regard.

Eh. I'll be shocked if Day comes close to Urban's winning percentage. Hope he does, but only losing 9 games in 7 years is insane. And the fact that Meyer "only" won 1 NC goes to show how ridiculously hard it is to win, especially now-a-days with Bama, a rotating SEC powerhouse, and then Clemson.

That being said, it's not the worst time to start fresh. The wheels were loosening under Urban and things needed to be tightened up. The mediocre coaching hires, head scratching 30 point blowouts, and offensive snags were pilling up. Part of that was the grind, part was Meyer trying to graft parts of his offense to Day's now dominant concepts, and part was the very difficult reality of finding top replacements for great assistants. Sometimes its easier to clear the slate, start with a new foundation, and go from there. Can't say for sure, but Day seems to be a little better with Xs and Os and has a more sustainable offense. The biggest questions are will he maintain high level recruiting, can he manage a locker room and staff throughout a season, and can he find suitable coaching replacements so that both sides of the ball don't seesaw back and forth every 2-3 years? He already does one well and he players all seem to like him. That's a damn good start.

Basically this is a roundabout way of saying I'm confident in Day, but it's unfair to set the baseline at a 90% winning percentage and more than one NC. I'd love it, but it's hard to realistically expect.

Like I said..I'm not taking anything away from Urban...he's a legend. I just think Day is in the right place at the right time. Ryan Day can easily become a legend himself.

If Day can keep getting great "Urban like"classes he'll have a shot at Urban's record. But the Big is a lot tougher now than when Urban came in. Credit Urban for making it tougher. The college game is different now also and Day "fits" the changes in the college game very well. Day can be very successful and still not equal Urban's record. Can Day hold on to his young coaches? How long will the old guys stay? We just don't know much at this point.

Day is inheriting a deeper and more talented roster than Cooper, Tressel, or Meyer did, and while the results remain to be seen, I feel this is the best coaching staff OSU has had since Meyer poached Chris Ash in 2014. Recruiting hasn’t dropped off one bit and Meyer is still around for Day to bounce questions off of.

And for all the credit Urban gets (and deserves), he was prone to mind blowing dumb calls in game.

All that said, where great coaches earn their pay is keeping things together when shits gone off the rails. How does the team respond when they’re down? How does the team bounce back after a loss? How does the coaching staff deploy personnel when injuries are piling up in Week 9 or 10?

I don’t know how Day will do in that regard. This job has a way of grinding people down. But his two month audition last year is evidence he should be able to handle it. If there were red flags we got a Helfrich instead of a Lincoln Riley or Dabo Swinney, I think we’d have seen hints of it already.

Seriously doubt Day will touch Meyer's success rate nor will I hold it against him if he doesn't. I'm expecting great things, not unreasonable unreal things. That's what Meyer did here.

He’s already at a 1.000 winning percentage as HC. I’m sure he’ll be fine.

Definitely a very high bar. I think that Day's supporting coaching staff gives him that chance. As does the unbelievable talent that is at Ohio State and is coming in through recruiting. But I agree. Very high bar.
