What Concerns Ryan Day Most About His Team?

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day believes he knows how his team is going to play on Saturday, but this being the Buckeyes’ first game on Saturday, there are still unknowns.

Sure, Ohio State is a 27-point favorite and nobody outside the program is expecting a Buckeye loss on Saturday, but Day still has his concerns.

And he is no different than any other head coach this weekend.

“Ball security and tackling, those are the two things,” he said of his biggest concerns on offense and defense.

“And I think so much of that comes with being tough. We talk about it all along how tough we have to be. And then I watched the documentary after the (Florida-Miami) game the other night. Woody Hayes was talking about toughness for like 15 minutes. It was really cool because that’s the essence of Ohio State.”

Day will be watching three main areas on Saturday. Two of them are the aforementioned tackling and ball protection. The third is blocking. All three involve toughness, which is what he has been preaching to the team since he took over.

“It’s all about toughness,” he said. “And tackling is being tough and ball security is toughness. It’s toughness locking on to the ball and understanding how important that ball is. Sometimes it’s being unselfish and making sure that that ball’s locked away, or a quarterback not forcing the ball on the coverage.”

Day is focused on winning rather than being cautious with Fields

Heading into game one, Ryan Day and the coaching staff are focused on keeping Justin Fields out of harm’s way, but they are not going to let caution affect their ability to execute successfully.

While most Ohio State fans are imagining a game where Fields is safely resting on the sideline in the fourth quarter, Day is preparing his players to execute at a high level in crunch time.

In order to fully utilize a player like Fields, Ohio State will have to allow him to make plays with his legs on a regular basis. There is a fine line, however, between clipping the young quarterback’s wings and exposing him to unnecessary punishment.

Heading into the Florida Atlantic game, there is an outside expectation that Fields will be able to rest in garbage time.

The Buckeyes are preparing for a four-quarter bout, however, and Ryan Day said that is the proper approach to any opponent.

“I think you have to go into a game expecting to go win the game in the fourth quarter,” Day said. “You have to go into games thinking that way.”

Day does not want his team to become complacent and underestimate an opponent, so he does not want to look ahead to a scenario where he may have to decide when to sit down starters, such as Fields.

As of right now, Day’s focus is on winning the game against FAU.

“If you start getting ahead of yourselves down the road - these guys are good,” Day said. “They're well-coached and we have to make sure we're ready to win the game in the fourth quarter. If you go down a different road you go down a bad path.”

Ryan Day wants to keep traditions going at Ohio State

Tradition means everything at Ohio State. The skull session, the walk to the stadium, Script Ohio and Carmen Ohio are all integral parts of the gameday experience not only for the fans, but for the team and coaches as well.

When a new head coach takes over a program, questions surround how traditions may be changed or updated, and with a school like Ohio State, a coach is judged as much on fitting in the Buckeye culture as he is his coaching performance on the field. With Ohio State’s 25th head coach Ryan Day, you’ll find that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

“We're doing a couple of things just leading up to the game, but in terms of the traditions that have been before, we want to keep all those going,” Day said. “That's one of the great things about Ohio State -- the skull sessions and the walk, the quick calls with the students -- we actually did that; we had almost 5,000 students in the stadium the other day. We went through it and taught them the quick calls, unbelievable tradition. And then singing with the band afterwards.”

During his two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Day was able to look at how Urban Meyer treated the traditions of Ohio State and the way he respected the institutions that came before him. He saw the impact it had on the players and fans, how hyped they became just minutes before kickoff as the team ran out of the tunnel.

Day has a lot more responsibility on his plate now as head coach, but he doesn’t want to get tunnel vision before kickoff and forget to appreciate those big moments.

“Had a long talk with Coach Meyer when I first took the job, and he used to say when "Hang on Sloopy" came on, he looked up and would really appreciate that he was coaching at Ohio State,” Day said. “I tried to figure out when that's going to be for me, and that's when I run out into the stadium, when I'm with the team in the tunnel, looking up to see the Horseshoe and everybody that supports the Buckeye Nation, how cool that is take it in, take a deep breath, because you can go through a whole game and not ever recognize anything that's going on because you're so caught up in the moment.”
