Heisman Trophy winners of Ohio State

Hall of Fame
When Eddie George and Troy Smith won thier Heisman Trophys, the bowl games that they played in, Ohio State lost both of them. One to Tennessee and the other to Florida. I am not too sure of the results for Archie Griffin in 74 and 75. But it seems to me that a hex or jinx was put on Ohio State football when ever an Ohio State player won that trophy. And another thing that came to my mind is I don't think the Buckeyes have ever won against the SEC in football. Boy talk about Jinxes......... I hope we can end those real quick. Especially with Tressel as the coach.

We lost by a point to USC in the 1975 Rose Bowl, and then lost to UCLA 23-10 in the 1976 Rose Bowl.

We have beaten LSU, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt from the SEC. But against the rest of the SEC:

Alabama: 0-3-0
Auburn: 0-1-1
Florida: 0-1-0
Georgia: 0-1-0
South Carolina: 0-2-0
Tennessee: 0-1-0

You make a good point Darkhorse. I thought of the same thing when Troy Smith was gone and was concerned about that Florida game. I remember
the Tennessee game too and thinking that Eddie George would have a great
game but it wasn't only him. The whole team kind of lost thier edge in that one. Matter of speaking not too many Heisman Trophy winners dazzled the fans in bowl game now that I think of it. Maybe the Heisman deal has changed now and its not that meaningful as it was in the beginning. But its nice to look up on the "Shoe" and see all those names of the Heisman winners.

The other 3 Heisman winners final game of their winning year.

1944 Les Horvath: home vs tsun. We won 18-14, Horvath was the games leading rusher. The Bucks finish 9-0 but rules at the time prohibited playing in the Rose Bowl. OSU declared National Civilian Champs, 2nd in AP behind Army.

1950 Vic Janowicz: home vs tsun. We lost the infamous Snow Bowl 3-9. No rushing stats to speak of but Vic punted 21 times for 685 yards and kicked a FG for our only 3 points. The Fg was reportedly into the wind and snow at a severe angle.

1955 Hop Cassady: @ tsun. We won 17-0. No repeat rule keeps OSU from the Rose Bowl. Hop rushes for 146 and Bucks are B10 champs.

FWIW
  • Horvath, Cassady, Griffin, Griffin and Smith all beat tsun, won the B10 title and the Heisman in their winning seasons
  • Janowicz and George did not

Us in Huskernation are still trying to figure out how Eddie George won the heisman over Tommie Frazier.

Not trying to knock Eddie, but what happened in the bowl games that year kinda' acted as an exclamation point for us. Nebraska destroyed Florida and touchdown Tommie had a seventy five yard touchdown run breaking seven or eight tackles which will live in husker history forever. Meanwhile, how did Eddies bowl game work out?

I'm in the camp which thinks the Heisman should be awarded AFTER the bowl season, not before.

Being even-handed, both were excellent choices for that Heisman. The Heisman is not, and never has been scientific. In many years it is a "beauty contest"! And we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

the Heisman Trophy is not awarded to the player that had the best play in their bowl game

you are going to have to bring a little something more to the table to make a compelling argument

edit: and now I see why you want it to be based on the bowl game performance

Frazier: Senior stats (Heisman Trophy runner-up): 98-177 (55.4%), 1,467 yards, 18 TD, 6 INT
113 carries, 803 yards (7.1 ypc), 16 TD

color me unimpressed, Eddie almost matched his total yards purely on the ground

Eddie winning made up for Kieth Byars getting screwed over by Doug Flutie.

Frazier being passed over was later rectified by Tim Crouch getting one.

Just like baseball, it's all about the makeup calls. :wink2:
