Herbie questions the system

But he needs to survey the nation and find a play-caller who will take advantage of the athletic ability that resides on this roster.

That point stands out to me the most. Even with a standout offensive line, we probably wouldn't be aggressive enough to use it. Tressel is an excellent coach that needs an offensive coordinator.

if tressel insists on calling the plays fine. just let peterson take over he OL and get another OC in here to give him a more effective play set to call from.

We could give norm chow our playbook and let him call plays. It would probably take him about 10 minutes to burn it and draw some things up on an
etch-a-sketch.

I'm also a little miffed at Daniels as the passing coordinator. Perhaps someone should inform him that the middle of the field isnt off limits to receivers, and that the receivers are allowed to be moving when they catch the ball. his affinity for curl and out routes is ineffective.
I agree completely, in the few games that the O-line was able to marginally win the battle up front play calling was never a problem. However win the O-line get their asses beat, play calling just doesn't matter anymore. Bollman needs to be unemployed, O-line production has decreased every year since he took over. Its not a question of talent or time, it is a question of coaching competence.

On one hand this is funny:
Told of Herbstreit's biting analysis, Tressel replied, "We like to listen to any constructive criticism, and we'll take that to heart."

But he was noncommittal about whether he would consider changes, saying only that if he does seek input from anyone, "It probably wouldn't be Kirk."

On the other hand... this is a good idea:
Herbstreit, an OSU team captain in 1992, suggested replacing Bollman with recruiting coordinator John Peterson, who coached the line that protected Ben Roethlisberger at Miami last season.

The real problem is that Zwick wasn't hitting any of the moving targets after hitting those two bombs to Holmes in the Marshall game.

Hitting backs and receivers in stride is so important because it allows the player to keep momentum and make better moves because they don't have to focus so much on catching a poorly thrown pass. Even when Zwick hits a receiver, they have little to no shot at yards after the catch. I'd especially like to see Roy Hall get hit in stride on a slant route...Can you imagine a single DB trying to take him down when he has a full head of steam?

Even more important is the ball location on screens...he's throwing the ball behind or above the receiver, giving the defense that extra split second to close.

Football is a game where a .10 difference in a 40 yard dash is a HUGE difference. That extra tenth can be the difference between getting stopped in the backfield, or just hitting the hole and breaking it deep. This team has screwed up on these fine points, and the offense struggles.

I'm just glad that Herbie is using his high profile constructively!!!! Pete Johnson complaining is one thing, but Herbie calling out the coaching staff is another thing entirely, in terms of media exposure/credibility. If tradition and ex-players and such mean as much to Tress as he claims, he should start listening to their comments.......they have walked the walk.....

Honest question.

Does anyone remember any coach in any sport ever changing his way of doing things because of pressure?

I don't, but maybe some of you do.

JT has had some success with his style, so I don't see him changing.

I feel that is why you see so many retread coaches in pro sports.
A guy gets fired, moves on does the same thing, gets fired, moves on, etc.

If we miss a bowl game this year Tressel will feel the pressure. Tressel needs to realize this is not DIV 1AA. One loss and you can forget about going to the NC game especially with our(no love for ugly games media and coaches poll). The BCS is now set up for teams that are impressive. The strength of schedule and quality wins are out which fucks OSU over. We don't have a playoff like in DIV1AA where coaches can lose 1 or 2 games and still make the playoffs.

He will adapt or he will lose his job. It's really that simple. The alumni will not take 2 years in a row without a bowl game or three years around .500. He has at least next year and maybe the year after. He needs to quit being so loyal to coaches and certain players because it has burnt him badly IMO. My dad told me thats why you never hire friends because if you have to fire them it ruins your relationship.

There are alot of hot coaches out there right now. Petrino(Louisville) and Meyer(Utah) would be some guys OSU would have to at least look at. I agree that the NC bought him 2 years but the guy better wake up and realize this is OSU and losing will not be tolorated by the Alumni. I think hes learning how tough it is to coach at a major college vs. a DIV 1AA.

I can't remember a coach who was dropped anywhere near this soon after actually winning a title (heck, I can't remember the last coach that got fired that ever won a title at some point), but Frank Solich was fired just 2 years after PLAYING for one, so Tressel better be thanking his lucky stars every single day for that wonderful group in 2002, or else he might be looking for a job next season, or in 2006 if next year doesn't go much better. As it is, he'll have to pretty thoroughly run the program into the ground to be fired, because the LAST thing the AD wants is to fuel the "graveyard of coaches" image by firing a guy 2 years after he wins a championship. Tressel is here to stay folks, at least as long as Geiger is here. Now, if there is a new AD in the next 2 years or so, things could change if Tressel doesn't...we'll see.
