Herby apologizes on behalf of ESPN for Mark and Trev!!

ysubuck

Be water my friend.
This was great.
On the afternoon show today, Herbie said that he was embarassed after Andy Geiger "did us a favor" and came on with Tirico.

Said that Mark and Trev showed "no class" in their commentary on Coach Tressel and Andy Geiger. Also said that he can't wait to "say hello" to Mark and Trev when he sees them tomorrow in Florida.

He said that he wanted to publicly apologize to Ohio State and Andy Geiger and that he was embarassed for ESPN after seeing/hearing how Mark and Trev acted during the halftime show and before and after the game.

Thought it showed a lot of class.

While I agree it showed some class on Herbstreit's part, it would be much more meaningful if Kirk apologizes on Gameday, both tonight and before the Orange Bowl (like THAT will happen). When you consider the constant negative PR disseminated by ESPN over the last SIX weeks, it would be only a small measure of fairness to apologise on those broadcasts.

IF ESPN really wants me to feel better, then MarK May and Trev Albert both need to apologise, both for their hatchet jobs, and in May's case for taking $$$ while at Pitt...That dirty SOB...he just makes my blood boil...

you people have to be kidding me?? yeah, i'll just throw out a half-a-mill gig b/c my company doesn't treat my school right.

the expectations y'all place on herbie are ridiculous. he has to pick tosu in every game they play, he has to be right on all predictions, he has to risk his job to appease internet fans....its absurd.

c'mon folks....herbie is doing everything he can. there is a reason he is the best in the country at what he does.

I think Herbie could stick up for his alma mater a bit better, but he'd be a complete idiot to mess up basically one of the three best jobs in the world-Ron Jeremy and Dick Vitale have the other two!

Thanks Alan, I even had to explain this to my mom of all people. She is the reason that I am a Buckeye, but sometimes she gets a little "emotional". I love her to death but she was going off this weekend and I had to say something, pretty much the same thing that you said just now. People need to back off the guy, he does what he can, I would pay $$ (not just vcash mind you) to be a fly on the wall in Florida when he runs into Trev and Mark...

I have no problems with what Herbie said in the last go around or early in regards to OSU's anemic offense -- They were both pretty close to the truth. My only problem was May and Albert especially May calling for Geiger and Coach T's job and they don't even know all the facts...

Kirk deserves some slack, but not as much as you say

he has a job to do......no doubt
his job is to be objective....no doubt
picking the Bucks to win every week regardless is not objective....no doubt
making negative comments on a pertinent subject is part of the job..no doubt

but saying "if I were an offensive recruit I would NOT go to Ohio State"
.....that is NOT objective....if it were then he would say the same thing about Virginia Tech, LSU....and he would say that a defensive recruit should not go to Miami, Florida, USC............you get my drift

sitting there and nodding your head while Corso goes off on Ohio State and names a bunch of offenders and their offense and then clearly imply that NONE had been disciplined by Tressel...........that is NOT being objective

Herbie is in a bad spot here......but he needs to balance out some of the false accusations and the unobjective gibberish being spewed by guys sitting next to him

........he won't do this, but he ought to call out both May and Alberts and ask these questions:

to May........."Mark, you played for Jackie Sherrill...who is well known for having been guilty of major infractions at 2 schools......were you EVER offered any benefit that is against the rule? If May says NO then Herbie should say..."OK, then Sherrill only cheated AFTER he left Pitt, is that what we're supposed to believe?"

to Trev....."Trev, you played for Osborne.....are you PROUD of his decision to let Christian Peter and Lawrence Phillips play despite their assault charges and eventual convictions? Do you think these guys should have been held out of more games than they were?"

too bad he won't do that because that would get him fired.....but it would be nice

but saying "if I were an offensive recruit I would NOT go to Ohio State"

Davey,

This is not what he said, I was listening to the show that day. What he said was that ... "He would have a hard time telling a top notch offensive recruit to go to Ohio State". There is a little difference there. He also said that if "He" were a blue chip offensive recruit that he would be hard pressed to be convinced to go to tOSU, or something like that.

Jeebus, the guy is not guilty of murder or anything guys. Stop trying to crucify him.

Umm, yeah... I can splel...

people.....try to think of it this way.....

herbie can do a TON more good for Ohio State if he bites his lip and slowly takes care of these things behind the scenes than he ever would by going off on the air and getting his butt fired....

thomas jefferson said something like this..."when you are angry count to ten before you speak.....and when you are really, really angry....count to sixty."

Alan - absolutely agree with you that this riding of Herbie is plain nuts.

And its because of his excellence in front of the camera that I'll be watching and listening carefully to what he has to say about the MM & TA performance -- and how he says those things. For I am sure there is a way for Herb to effectively make his point without ripping up his contract with ESPN. I'm also quite sure he is capable of finding that means.
(Case in point, last time it was Tirico pulling Mark May and Alberts over the coals whilst the game with Oklahoma State was underway. Notably, next time they returned to the studio one of the things May tried to emphasize was that they were not trying to say any particluar person shoulds be fired. 'Course horse had already bolted barn by that time.)

I wonder if Herby was hoping to rebuild that bridge between himself and AG? Getting the AD of the largest collegiate athletic program in the nation and who has had nothing but a poor relationship with ESPN this past year was no small coup for ESPN. I cannot imagine Tirico, Herby, Fowler and others were too happy with the comments by the moron twins. I think ESPN is trying to salvage some of its reputation with the Buckeye Nation, for their own self interest. We know they want to come into town next year for the Texas game and I bet they really would have preferred to be here on Nov. 20th as opposed to Utah this past season. Nothing like the village idiots destroying their efforts just by opening their mouths.

Herby can say all he wants as long as he if fair and responsible, which I think he has been to the most part. I didn't like what he said about the offense being boring at OSU, but it can be at times. So what, it wins games and national championships. Nevertheless, I think he is the best college analyst on TV.

Also, if people think he is going to side with his radio gig in Columbus over a national job with ESPN you might want to think again. If he continues to receive the abuse he has lately, including threats on his life in his adopted town, no one should question why he would leave town and head to Bristol.

Finally, he really needs to be pissed at Corso. I have no idea if Herby is building his new home in the town that Corso mentioned on national TV, but that guy has to get a clue as to what a little privacy is about. No wonder he sucked as a coach and is a laughingstock as an analyst. There has to be someone better for that job than that tool.
