Gibbs already high on Portis
Coach doesn't expect durability to be issue

PALM BEACH, Fla. - It hasn't taken Clinton Portis very long to endear himself to new coach Joe Gibbs in Washington.
"He's got a little funny bone," Gibbs said Wednesday during a coaches' breakfast at the NFL owners meetings. "You kind of like being around him."
Gibbs isn't worried that the 205-pound Portis isn't big or strong enough to withstand the punishment of the Red- skins' run-oriented offense.
"Fifteen hundred and 1,600 yards (rushing) tells me (his durability) is pretty good," Gibbs countered. "That's what I'm going off of. Hopefully, he can stay healthy. He's a gifted package."
The Redskins acquired Portis last month, trading Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey and a second-round pick to the Denver Broncos.
Gibbs got a taste of what Portis can do this past weekend, during the Redskins' first mini-camp.
"He was very impressive. He's smart and real confident," Gibbs said. "You can see he feels right at home."
Gibbs knows a thing or two about running backs.
"I've had great running backs. Big backs like John Riggins. Smaller guys like Joe Washington. In-between guys like Earnest Byner," Gibbs said. "I don't care if he's big or small, as long as he's productive. Clinton is definitely that. You couldn't ask for someone to be more productive. We're excited about having him."
And Portis, whose eight-year, $50.5 million deal makes him the highest-paid back in league history, is excited to be there.
He even is planning to participate in off-season workouts with the team rather than working out in Florida with former University of Miami players, as he did last year in a move that irked some Broncos officials.
