High Buckeye Offense Expectations?

JT knows how to win, end of story!

JT knows how to win! Fact! End of story! But, the more intriguing question might be, What is his goal for each team and what is the method to achieve that goal?

The best point made so far about the 02 season was JT knew we didnt have the offense to come back from 14 down so why risk giving them great field position when we could run punt and gain 50 yds. and then play great defense and try and win field position. You play to your strengths.

i'll skip past most of what you said, including the hilarious statement that Holmes alone trumps our WR corp in 02/03 (would you like to bet if Holmes is drafted before Michael Jenkins?)...............and i'll simply repeat myself:

if you can convince me that our talent level on offense was in the bottom 10% of the country the last 2 years (make that 3) than i'll buy into your argument that he's played to our strengths

Mistri I agree with you that our talent level was in the bottom 10% but there are so many things that go in to determining who has better stats and so forth.

tOSU doesnt pass the ball 50 times a game making the game longer and more chances for putting up yards.

If you are talking about yardage then where is the fact taht our d gets us good field position and when in field goal range we try to make sure we at least get 3.

Also what about Ginn's punt returns shortening the field.

I know you have probably heard it before, but the only stat that matters is W-L.

Texas Tech has a very good offense along with Hawaii but that doesnt mean that they are the best teams.

I am not saying we can't have a great offense and defense, just saying that with Tressel as coach we can't expect 400-500 yds. a game. What we can expect is a W and a decent amount of points this year. I say we average about 24.

Yeah I also forgot about that..... our punt return will play a huge part in how we do next season. Teams most likely will not want to kick to ginn/holmes so look for alot of kicking out of bounds, and as we've seen they usually shank them when they try and do so. So this all plays out for our offense. I think rarely will our team start from inside our own 20.

We can all agree that Pittman and Haw will at least hit the hole faster than other backs that we have had. The question is can they sustain the bumps and bruises and make it through alright.

As I stated last year the OL will determine a lot of things...will they knock people off the ball. Will they get nasty and finish blocks and look for others at the second level. I am not ready to say anything until I watch them in the spring game and then we have to wait until Miami.

i did note that it was an exaggeration.

was our talent level in the bottom 10% of the country? no, but then we don't play ever team IN THE COUNTRY. was our talent level on offense less than or equal to every team we played in those seasons? without MoC clearly and undeniably, yes! you can't do a direct compairson of our offensive talent vrs output to southern eastern western school for the blind U. it doesn't work that way. believe it or not, but in the big 10 the level of competition is a tad higher than other conferences...

feel free to present an arguement that lydell was better than any tb who lined up for the other team. hell, even though we're not including 04 feel free to try to argue that he was better than iowa's 5th string guy.

dude give it a rest, you are ridiculous, reality is reality.........we had 3 linemen drafted from the 02/03 teams, including 2 Rookie starters, a QB who although not spectacular was good enough to start for an NFL team due to injuries and pull out a few wins as a Rookie, 2 WR's that ended up as 1st round draft picks (Jenkins/Gamble), a TE that was a 3rd Rd. draft pick, Holmes who will be a 2nd/3rd rounder...........Ross was a dissapointment, but was effective when given space to operate and didn't have 4 LB's in his face, do you think he was worse than Derek Combs or Pepe Pearson? they seemed to get the job done......but you're right that is definitely less talent than Bowling Green/Cincinatti/SDSU/Northwestern/MSU/SJSU/Texas Tech, etc., etc.

all i'm asking is to face reality, Tressel is a great coach who knows how to win, knows how to manage the game and keep his players focused, but an offensive mastermind he isn't, that's just reality.............i hope that he continues to evolve his offensive thinking along with our offensive staff as a whole with this new offense and influx of speed that we have now..............but i'll remain skeptical until i see it

tressel is a great coach and he gets the most out of his talent.
or
the 02 offensive squad made it to the nfl on their own merit in spite of tressel, not because of him.

these statements are mutually exclusive. i will face reality right beside everyone else directly after the kickoff against texas. i think you are atleast willing to understand why i hope your wrong.

Ross was a dissapointment, but was effective when given space to operate and didn't have 4 LB's in his face
if our linemen were so good why were there 4lb's in ross' face? gamble was picked as a cb not a wr. i have noted that hartstock was a stud on more than one occasion. how many points did the bears offense score in those 2 wins again?

Oh, the stupidity. Ask Kent State (51 points), San Jose State (50 points), and Indiana (45 points) how bad our offense was without Clarett.

In the Kent State game, we had 346 yards of offense without Clarett. Mo Hall went 3-36 yards (12 ypc) and a TD, Ross went 4-28 yards (7 ypc), and Krenzel went 12-14-0 (86%) for 190 yards passing. Clarett sat out from early in the second quarter.

Against SJSU, the offense had 435 yards of offense in addition to Clarett's output, including 19-23-0 (83%) for 355 yards and 3 TDs passing.

In the Indiana game, the offense had 357 non-Clarett yards, including 18-23-0 (78%) for 217 yards and 2 TDs passing.

We blasted all three teams, even without a lot of help from Clarett.

Now I understand.

Listen...Tressel opens it up against the weak schools and reigns things in for the tougher competition. When he perceives our offense as more talented than the opposing defense, he unleashes overwhelming force. When we face a defense that is more talented than our offense, he plays the field position game.

I wonder what would happen if our defense was considered our "liability". Would we play more prevent-type, bend-but-don't break schemes? I hope we don't have to answer this one in the near term.

I agree with what you are saying about Tressel that he does not allow his offensive players the ability to make plays and seems to hold onto the ball a little too tightly, although I will take a win over huge numbers any day of the week but please DONT consider Gamble as a WR first round draft pick when it was KNOWN what position he was drafted for and WHY he was NOT the starter on offense his junior year. Drew Carter was MUCH better than Gamble at WR. Gamble was an excellent corner which is where he is playing in the NFL today.

Anyone know of a team called scUM? or Purdue? hwo did those high powered offenses fare? A team that can execute a conservative offense well will beat a high-powered, risk-prone offense most of the time in terms of overall wins per season.

And I love how people think that he doesn't let the offense turn it on against good teams. They did pretty well against the #7 NC State. I think there was a scUM game last year, but maybe I was mistaken. And the offense seemed to be pretty decent against OkState.

it's called scheme, and the inability to counter the defense

but please DONT consider Gamble as a WR first round draft pick when it was KNOWN what position he was drafted for and WHY he was NOT the starter on offense his junior year.
true, but he was still a FIRST ROUND TALENT, with the speed, agility, and gamebreaking ability of a first round pick.............remember the reverse against (Indiana?), that was a thing of beauty, i believe a 43 yd. TD run...........how many other times did we see that during the year? any???...........he had great athletic ability, and average hands, but was still rarely utilized, you get a guy like that in space and let him make plays, or let him burn the defense deep ala Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.......his abilities on offense were not capitalized on
