Dang it. I thought this thread was going to provide insights on good background music for my next highlight reel.

I think that the music being played should reflect a person's style and personality or the one that they would like portrayed. You have freedom of speech, but with that comes a responsibility to your audience. You need a warning or disclaimer, or else you are subjecting people to possibly offensive material without their consent. It's a matter of respect.

If more people would just learn to put personal preferences aside, drop their stubborn pride and be respectful...a lot of things would change. Playing explicit music on a highlight reel isn't the problem...it's just a symptom of a larger one.

Disagree

Utopian views aside....judgment is a part of life and society. A personal highlight reel can and should contain any type of music the owner desires, but a highlight reel for a kid asking a program to invest a scholarship should be without any music at all.

Why do people wear ties or at least nice clothes to job interviews?

I think we are generally on the same page..."When in Rome...".

If I were sending a highlight tape to my friends, I would put about anything on the tape because I know they wouldn't be offended.

If I were sending it to my parents (my dad is a preacher), I would likely put different music on it because I want to be respectful and I am willing to sacrifice my immediate wants so that he is not offended.

Like you said, when sending something out professionally...keep it business-like. I'm not sure music hurts their case, but if they can't find something appropriate for that audience...it's better to leave it off. Just like wearing a tie to an interview to present yourself well because it shows that you are willing to put the company and it's standards ahead of your own comfort.

I highly value free speech, but also think that the audience should be able to control what they consume. That is why there are controls, ratings and warnings that allow people to filter what they take in. I completely agree that kids have the right to express themselves and their style of play with music. I think it's disrespectful to just put it out there for anyone to grab without giving their audience the opportunity to decide if it's content is suited for them.

I am definately not pro-censorship, although I may have given that impression in my last message...I believe that if you are sending it to a specific audience (college, parents, etc.) you should, out of respect, try not to offend them. If you are sending it out to a large group, or just throwing it out there...put a warning. Just like you said, leave it to their judgement.
